Embracing the Simple Life in Taygetos

Today was a delightful blend of the rural and the relaxed, a true immersion into the heart of Mount Taygetos. It's amazing how quickly you adapt to the rhythm of a place, trading the hum of Heidelberg for the bray of donkeys and the clinking of glasses in a taverna. Greta and I set out this morning with a sense of adventure, ready to embrace whatever the day held, and Taygetos certainly delivered.

Our day began with breakfast at The castle. It wasn't an actual castle, mind you, but a charming little spot with a name that promised something grand. The reality was even better – a cozy atmosphere and hearty fare that fueled us up for the day's adventures. I had some eggs and bacon while Greta enjoyed some local fruit. It was a perfect start, setting the tone for a day of simple pleasures and authentic experiences.

A Morning with the Donkeys

After breakfast, we made our way to the Donkey Farm. I’ll admit, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I've always been more of a 'dog person,' but these gentle creatures completely won me over. The Donkey Farm in Lefktro is a hidden gem that invites visitors to immerse themselves in the rustic charm of the Greek countryside. It's not just about meeting adorable donkeys; it's an experience that connects you with nature and local culture. We had the opportunity to interact with these friendly animals, learning about their care and significance in rural life. The staff were incredibly welcoming, sharing stories about the donkeys and the farm's history. Greta, with her natural affinity for animals, was in her element, happily feeding and petting the donkeys. I even managed to coax a smile out of one particularly stoic-looking fellow with a well-placed scratch behind the ears. It was a surprisingly therapeutic experience, a reminder to slow down and appreciate the simple things in life. It was a perfect stop for those wandering through the region, offering a unique blend of education and enjoyment in a picturesque setting.

Exploring Taygeti (Barsinikos)

Next on our itinerary was Taygeti (Barsinikos). The drive up to the village was an adventure in itself, with winding roads offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Taygeti is a mountain village in the region of Laconia, located on the eastern slope of Taygetos mountain. As we climbed higher, the air grew crisper, and the scent of pine filled our lungs. We parked the car and wandered through the village, soaking in the atmosphere. The village exudes an authentic charm, and it felt like stepping back in time. We walked to the Holy Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi, which had a great view rolling down to the valley of Evrotas river and Sparta.

Lunch at The Greek

By lunchtime, we were both feeling peckish, so we decided to stop at The Greek for a bite. It was a classic taverna, with red-checkered tablecloths and the aroma of grilled meats wafting through the air. We ordered a selection of mezes – tzatziki, dolmades, and some grilled halloumi – along with a couple of Mythos beers. The food was simple but delicious, the perfect fuel for our afternoon adventures. As we ate, we watched the locals chatting and laughing, feeling a sense of connection to this vibrant community.

An Evening in Anavryti

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, we made our way to Anavryti for dinner at Amarantos (Soumaki taverna). This taverna came highly recommended, and it didn't disappoint. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with a cozy fireplace and a magnificent view. We ordered the souvlaki, of course, which was cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. The staff were courteous, and the service was spectacular. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring, savoring delicious food and good company in a truly stunning setting. We enjoyed some ribs, steaks and salads. The prices were average.

Nightcap at Eucalyptus Bar

Before heading back to our campsite, we decided to stop for a nightcap at the Eucalyptus Bar. Tucked away in Plaka, this bar was a hidden oasis, with a relaxed vibe and a great selection of drinks. Greta opted for a glass of local wine, while I tried a craft beer from a nearby brewery. As we sipped our drinks, we reflected on the day's adventures, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and charm of Mount Taygetos.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're planning to explore the Θεα Μεσσηνιακης Μανης View Point and Dourakis’ Tower. Another day, another adventure – I can't wait!

This trip is turning out to be exactly what we needed – a chance to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with nature and each other. And while I did forget the insect repellent and extra batteries, Greta assures me that a few mosquito bites and a dead flashlight are a small price to pay for such an incredible experience. Maybe I can find some thyme to help with the mosquitos.

We found a camping spot and fell asleep under the stars, listening to the sounds of the nature.

Heidelberg feels very far away right now, and that’s a good thing. I almost feel like I am in one of those romantic places in the world.
