Finding Peace in the Peaks

Today, Greta and I set out to embrace the tranquil side of Mount Taygetos, venturing into hidden corners and soaking up panoramic vistas. It’s amazing how quickly the days are flying by; we’re already halfway through our Greek adventure!. Today promised a blend of natural beauty and local charm, and it certainly delivered.

Our day began in the cozy seaside village of Stoupa, where the promise of a hearty breakfast at Stoupa Restaurant beckoned. The morning air was fresh, carrying the scent of the sea as we strolled along the coast. The restaurant was bustling with early risers, a mix of locals and tourists eager to start their day with a taste of Greece. I opted for the classic fried eggs with sausage, while Greta enjoyed a yogurt with muesli, fruits and honey. Fuelled up and ready, we hopped into our rental car, excited to explore the hidden gems of Mount Taygetos.

Our first destination was Noupanti, a serene spot nestled in the heart of the mountains. As we drove, the landscape transformed from coastal views to winding mountain roads, with olive groves and cypress trees dotting the hillsides. I couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement, eager to uncover the natural beauty that awaited us. Noupanti, as it turned out, was everything we had hoped for and more.

Noupanti exuded an aura of peace and tranquility. The area was alive with the sounds of nature – the gentle rustling of leaves, the chirping of birds, and the distant bleating of sheep. We took our time wandering through the area, discovering hidden corners and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. It felt like a world away from the bustling tourist spots, a true escape into nature's embrace.

The beauty of a place is not just in what you see, but in how it makes you feel.

After spending a refreshing morning in Noupanti, our stomachs started rumbling, reminding us it was time for lunch. We drove towards Mystras, where we planned to have lunch at TAVERN DROSOPIGI - VELONIS PANAGIOTIS. The drive itself was an experience, offering panoramic views of the Taygetos mountains and the surrounding valleys.

Arriving at TAVERN DROSOPIGI, we were immediately charmed by its traditional Greek ambiance. The tavern was nestled in a picturesque location, surrounded by lush greenery and the soothing sounds of running water. We chose a table outside, eager to enjoy our meal with a view. The menu was filled with authentic Greek dishes, and we decided to try the local specialty – lamb. The lamb was cooked to perfection, tender and flavorful, and the portions were generous. Greta enjoyed a fresh Greek salad, bursting with the flavors of ripe tomatoes, cucumbers, and feta cheese.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we set off for our next destination: Viewpoint Neochori-Pyrgos. The drive to the viewpoint was an adventure in itself, with winding roads and hairpin turns that tested my driving skills. But the stunning views along the way made it all worthwhile. As we climbed higher, the landscape opened up, revealing breathtaking vistas of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

Finally, we reached Viewpoint Neochori-Pyrgos, and the sight that greeted us was simply awe-inspiring. The panoramic views stretched as far as the eye could see, with rolling hills, charming villages, and the sparkling sea in the distance. We spent a long time at the viewpoint, simply taking in the beauty of the landscape. I set up my camera and captured a series of photos, trying to capture the magic of the moment. Greta simply sat and absorbed the scenery, a peaceful smile on her face.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to indulge in a bit of souvenir shopping at Riza gift shop. Located in Kardamyli, the shop was a treasure trove of local crafts and unique gifts. We spent a delightful hour browsing through the various items, admiring the handmade ceramics, stylish clothing, and charming trinkets. I picked up a beautifully crafted ceramic bowl as a memento of our trip, while Greta found a delicate silver necklace.

With our shopping bags in tow, we made our way to Sparti for dinner at En Chatipi. This restaurant promised an authentic Greek dining experience, and we were eager to try it out. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a warm and friendly atmosphere. The menu featured a range of traditional Greek dishes, and we decided to try a few different options. I opted for the pork with olives and orange, while Greta chose the moussaka. Both dishes were absolutely delicious, bursting with flavor and cooked to perfection.

As we savored our meal, we reflected on the day’s adventures. From the serene beauty of Noupanti to the breathtaking views of Neochori-Pyrgos, it had been a day filled with discovery and wonder. We felt grateful for the opportunity to explore this hidden corner of Greece and to experience its natural beauty and local charm. We also made a mental note to buy some insect repellent and extra batteries; those pesky mosquitoes were relentless, and my flashlight was already starting to dim.

Tomorrow, we're planning to visit the Donkey Farm and Taygeti (Barsinikos). I'm especially excited about the Donkey Farm; I've always had a soft spot for animals, and I think it will be a fun and unique experience. Greta is looking forward to Taygeti (Barsinikos), as she’s heard it offers some fantastic hiking trails with stunning views. For dinner, we're heading to Amarantos (Soumaki taverna) in Anavryti. I've read that they have some of the best souvlaki in the region, and I'm eager to try it out. And perhaps, after dinner, we’ll check out the Eucalyptus Bar for a nightcap.

As I sit here writing, with the echoes of the day still fresh in my mind, I realize how fortunate I am to share these experiences with Greta. Her enthusiasm and adventurous spirit make every journey even more special. I am also reminded of how lucky I am to be able to share these experiences with you, my readers. Your support and encouragement inspire me to keep exploring and sharing my adventures.

Until tomorrow, keep exploring and keep discovering!
