Exploring the Peaks of Mount Taygetos: An 11-Day Greek Adventure
Day 4: Diving Deep into Taygetos: Exploring Ridomo Gorge and Ancient Tunnels
Embark on a thrilling journey through Mount Taygetos' Ridomo Gorge and Lagada Rock-Tunnel, experiencing nature's raw beauty and historical wonders.
A Day of Exploration and Wonder
Today, Greta and I embarked on a journey that took us deep into the heart of Mount Taygetos. It was a day of rugged landscapes, echoing history, and the kind of natural beauty that etches itself into your memory. Leaving behind the familiar trails, we ventured into places where the spirit of adventure truly thrives.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Marmara Restaurant. It's a charming spot, and the traditional Greek dishes were the perfect fuel for our adventurous day ahead. After a quick bite, we set off towards our first destination: the Gorge of Ridomo.

Conquering the Gorge of Ridomo
The Gorge of Ridomo is known as one of the most impressive gorges in Greece. As we approached, the landscape transformed dramatically. The towering cliffs, carved by centuries of rushing water, created a sense of awe and anticipation. The air was fresh, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. Greta, ever the architect, was particularly fascinated by the geological formations, pointing out the sharp folds and color variations in the rocks.
The hike through the gorge was nothing short of exhilarating. The trail, at times narrow and challenging, led us deeper into the ravine. I was glad I'd packed my hiking boots; they were essential for navigating the rocky terrain. In some sections, the gorge narrowed to just a couple of meters, with walls soaring sixty meters high. It felt like walking through a natural cathedral, the sky a mere sliver above.
The Gorge of Ridomo is more than just a hike; it's an immersion into the raw, untamed beauty of nature, a place where you can feel the pulse of the earth beneath your feet.
We passed the Pigadiotiko stone bridge, a double-arched structure that seemed to defy gravity. It was a perfect spot for a photograph, capturing the essence of the gorge's dramatic landscape. We also spotted a few goats skillfully navigating the steep walls, a testament to the ruggedness of this place.
As we hiked, I couldn't help but think about the history etched into these rocks. Pausanias, the ancient Greek writer, mentioned the gorge, calling it “Hoireio Nape,” or “pig valley”. It's incredible to imagine people traversing this same path centuries ago.
Lunch with a View at Palataki Taverna
After our exhilarating hike through Ridomo Gorge, we were both ravenous. We made our way to Palataki Taverna in Ag. Ioannis. The taverna is known for its authentic Greek cuisine and stunning views, and it certainly didn't disappoint. We sat on the outdoor terrace, soaking in the panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscape, while enjoying a delicious meal of grilled meats and fresh salads. Greta particularly enjoyed the vegetarian options, which were abundant and flavorful.

Exploring the Lagada-Taygetos Rock-Tunnel 2
With our bellies full and spirits high, we ventured towards our next destination: the Lagada-Taygetos Rock-Tunnel 2. This geological wonder is a testament to the powerful forces that have shaped this region over millennia. The drive to the tunnel was scenic, winding through lush forests and past quaint villages.

As we approached the rock tunnel, we were immediately struck by its grandeur. The towering cliffs and intricate rock formations created a sense of awe. We parked the car and took a short hike along the marked paths leading into the tunnel. The trail was well-maintained, and the views of the surrounding landscape were simply breathtaking.
Walking through the tunnel was an almost surreal experience. The sunlight filtered through the rocky crevices, creating a magical play of light and shadow. The air was cool and still, a welcome respite from the summer heat. I couldn't resist snapping photos of the unique rock formations, trying to capture the essence of this geological wonder.
The tunnel is also a starting point for various outdoor activities, including hiking and rock climbing. We saw several trails that branched off into the mountains, promising even more breathtaking vistas and hidden gems.
Dinner and Cocktails to Cap Off the Day
As the day drew to a close, we headed to Kastenia for dinner at Platanos. This restaurant is known for its traditional recipes and warm hospitality, and it was the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploration. We savored the flavors of the local cuisine, sharing stories and laughter as the sun set over the mountains.

To cap off our day, we decided to visit Mon cheri cocktail bar in Kalamata. Though a bit of a drive from where we were, I had read about their unique cocktails and thought it would be a fun experience. The bar had a great atmosphere, and the cocktails were indeed inventive. Greta tried the Iceland cocktail, while I went for the Greenland. Both were delicious and a perfect end to our adventurous day.

Looking back, today was a perfect blend of adventure, history, and natural beauty. We explored rugged landscapes, marveled at geological wonders, and savored the flavors of local cuisine. It was a day that reminded me why I love to travel, to discover new places and immerse myself in different cultures.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore Noupanti and the Viewpoint Neochori-Pyrgos. I’m also hoping we can find some time to visit the Riza gift shop for some souvenirs. It’s been an incredible journey so far, and I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.
This trip has been a wonderful escape from my daily routine as a freelance software developer in Heidelberg. It’s a reminder of the importance of disconnecting from technology and reconnecting with nature. And sharing these experiences with Greta makes it all the more special. Perhaps I’ll even find some inspiration for my next coding project amidst these stunning landscapes.
I am so glad Greta and I remembered to pack our camera and portable charger, as without them we wouldn’t have been able to capture all of these amazing memories. Although I wish we hadn’t forgotten our insect repellent and extra batteries for flashlights, as those would have come in handy during our hike through the gorge.
