A Symphony of Colors and Stone

Today was nothing short of spectacular, a vibrant canvas painted across the Peruvian highlands. Leaving the familiar comforts of Cusco, I embarked on a journey that promised not just sights, but experiences etched into the soul. It was a day of chasing rainbows, both literally and figuratively, and discovering ancient spirits whispering through the stones.

Our day began with an early breakfast at Qamaq Restaurante. The cozy atmosphere and the promise of fresh, local ingredients were the perfect start to an adventurous day. I opted for the trout with garlic, a dish that was both flavorful and comforting, setting the tone for the day ahead.

The main event was the Cordillera del Arcoiris Palccoyo, the Rainbow Mountain's less-trodden cousin. The drive itself was an immersion into the raw beauty of the Andes. As we ascended, the landscape transformed into a tapestry of rolling hills and quaint villages. The air grew crisp and thin, a tangible reminder of the altitude. The ever-present threat of altitude sickness was at the back of my mind, so I was thankful I had packed some coca tea.

Reaching Palccoyo, I was immediately struck by the serenity of the place. Unlike the bustling Vinicunca, Palccoyo offered a tranquil experience, allowing for a deeper connection with the landscape. The mountains, adorned with stripes of red, ochre, and gold, stretched out before me, a testament to the earth's artistry. The relatively easy hike to the viewpoint was a welcome change, and I found myself lost in the panoramic views. My friends and I spent a long time taking photos and trying to capture the sheer scale of the landscape, but photos never quite do justice to the real thing.

Sometimes, the most breathtaking views are found not on the well-worn paths, but on the trails less traveled.

After soaking in the colors of Palccoyo, we ventured towards Farallones de Tecsecocha, a site that promised a different kind of beauty. As we drove, the landscape shifted again, revealing dramatic rock formations that seemed to rise out of nowhere. These 'farallones,' or cliffs, had a unique charm, standing tall against the Andean sky.

Exploring Farallones de Tecsecocha felt like stepping back in time. The ancient cave paintings, though weathered by time, offered a glimpse into the lives of those who inhabited this land centuries ago. It was humbling to stand in the presence of such history, feeling a connection to the past that transcended time. The waterfall nearby added a refreshing touch, its cascading waters a symbol of life in this rugged terrain.

Lunch at Inka Grill in Cusco was a delightful interlude. I opted for the lomo saltado, a classic Peruvian dish that never fails to satisfy. The mix of savory beef, onions, tomatoes, and fries was the perfect fuel for the rest of our day. The restaurant's vibrant atmosphere and friendly service made it a memorable experience.

In the late afternoon, I decided to explore the Handicraft Center Cusco. I was on the lookout for a special souvenir, something that would remind me of this incredible journey. The center was a treasure trove of textiles, ceramics, and jewelry, each piece telling a story of Andean culture and artistry. I was particularly drawn to the alpaca wool items, their softness a comforting reminder of the highlands. I ended up buying a beautifully woven scarf, its intricate patterns a reflection of the vibrant landscapes I had witnessed.

Dinner at Senzo was the perfect end to a perfect day. The restaurant's elegant setting and innovative cuisine offered a sophisticated culinary experience. I chose the vegetarian tasting menu, eager to sample the local Andean products. Each dish was a work of art, a testament to the chef's creativity and passion for Peruvian flavors. The chocolate dessert was a particular highlight, a decadent celebration of Peruvian cacao.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude and wonder. Peru continues to surprise and inspire me, its landscapes and culture weaving a spell that's hard to resist. Tomorrow, we plan to visit Ausangate and Mano de Ausanagate, and I can't wait to see what new adventures await. I am especially interested in seeing Mano de Ausanagate, as I have heard the views are incredible. I will be sure to bring my camera!

And as a small personal anecdote, I was amused to learn from one of the handicraft vendors that the circled 'S' signs all over Peru indicate safe zones in case of an earthquake. You learn something new every day!

Before heading back to the Novotel Cusco, my friends and I discussed how lucky we were to see the less touristy side of such a popular destination. Though I did miss my husband, David, and daughter, Jasmine, I knew that they would have loved the quiet beauty of Palccoyo and the history of Farallones de Tecsecocha. I will definitely be bringing them back with me to Peru someday.
