Day 4: Whispers of the Andes

Today was a day of sheer, unadulterated awe. Leaving the cozy embrace of the Novotel Cusco, I knew we were in for something special, but the reality of the Ausangate region far exceeded my already high expectations. It’s days like these that remind me why I started Evendo, to share these transformative experiences with all of you.

Our morning began, as it has each day, with a hearty breakfast at the Novotel Cusco Restaurant. Fuelled up and eager, my friends and I set out early, the crisp mountain air invigorating our senses. I made sure I had my camera ready; I didn't want to miss a single shot of the stunning landscapes I knew were coming. I did feel a pang of regret for forgetting my sunglasses, though. Note to self: always double-check the essentials, even when excitement takes over!

The drive towards Área de Conservación Regional Ausangate was an experience in itself. The scenery transformed dramatically as we left Cusco behind, trading the city's vibrant streets for rolling hills and glimpses of snow-capped peaks in the distance. As a community outreach coordinator, I’m always drawn to places where conservation efforts are evident, and the Área de Conservación Regional Ausangate is a testament to what can be achieved when local communities and organizations work together. Established in December 2019, the area spans over 66,000 hectares, protecting vital glaciers, high Andean grasslands, and the headwaters of the Vilcanota River.

The mountains are calling and I must go.

We spent a significant portion of our day exploring the Área de Conservación Regional Ausangate. The sheer scale of the landscape is humbling. The towering peaks of the Ausangate massif dominate the horizon, their glaciers glistening in the Andean sun. I learned that Ausangate is the fifth highest mountain in Peru, reaching a staggering 6,385 meters above sea level. The area is home to an incredible array of biodiversity, including vicuñas and Andean condors. It's truly a place where nature reigns supreme.

One of the highlights was our visit to Mirador Ausangate. Reaching this vantage point felt like stepping onto the roof of the world. The panoramic views were simply breathtaking. From here, we could see the entire Ausangate range in all its glory, with its glaciers, turquoise lagoons, and rugged valleys stretching out before us. The crisp, clean air filled our lungs as we soaked in the vista, a moment of serene connection with nature that I will cherish forever. I managed to capture some stunning photos, which I can’t wait to share on Evendo.

For lunch, we stopped at Apu Ausangate Restaurant. This cozy spot offered not only delicious Peruvian cuisine but also stunning views of the surrounding landscape. I decided to try the quinoa soup, which was served in a rather quirky way, in a hat! It was absolutely delicious and the perfect way to warm up after a morning in the mountains. My friends were a bit more adventurous, sampling some of the local meat dishes like alpaca and llama.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way back to Cusco, but not before making a pit stop at Mama Africa. I had heard so much about its vibrant nightlife and rooftop views, and I was eager to experience it for myself. Mama Africa is indeed a lively spot, with a mix of tourists and locals dancing to Latin and Western music. The rooftop terrace offered fantastic panoramic views of Cusco's historic plaza, making it a great spot for photos and enjoying the city's ambiance. I even tried my hand at salsa dancing, which was both hilarious and exhilarating!

We rounded off the day with dinner at Morena Peruvian Kitchen. The restaurant was a delightful culinary experience, offering a modern twist on traditional Peruvian dishes. The ambiance was cozy and inviting, and the service was impeccable. It was the perfect way to reflect on a day filled with incredible sights and cultural immersion.

Back at the Novotel Cusco, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the experiences of the day. The Ausangate region had captivated me with its raw beauty and rich cultural heritage. It's a place that demands respect and inspires awe, a reminder of the power and fragility of our natural world. I'm particularly grateful for the conservation efforts in place, ensuring that this incredible landscape will be preserved for generations to come.

Tomorrow, we’re off to explore Cordillera del Arcoiris Palccoyo and Farallones de Tecsecocha. I've heard that the Rainbow Mountain is a sight to behold, and I can't wait to see it with my own eyes. We'll be having breakfast at Qamaq Restaurante, lunch at Inka Grill, and dinner at Senzo. I am also hoping to do some souvenir shopping at the Handicraft Center Cusco. I'm sure it will be another day filled with adventure and unforgettable memories. Until then, goodnight from Cusco!

The weather in December around Ausangate can be unpredictable, with daytime temperatures ranging from 14°C to 16°C and nighttime temperatures dropping to -4°C. Frequent rain is also common, so it's essential to be prepared with waterproof gear.

As I reflect on the day, I'm reminded of the importance of sustainable travel. It's our responsibility to minimize our impact on the environment and support local communities. By choosing eco-friendly accommodations, respecting local customs, and purchasing locally made products, we can ensure that our travels contribute to the well-being of the places we visit. I encourage all of you to consider these factors when planning your next adventure.

The Ausangate Trek is more than just a hike; it's a journey of self-discovery, a chance to connect with nature and immerse oneself in a rich cultural tapestry. It's an experience that will stay with me long after I've left Peru, a reminder of the beauty and resilience of our planet and its people. And as I drift off to sleep, I can't help but feel excited about what tomorrow will bring.
