Concluding my Peruvian adventure with Machu Picchu's awe and Cusco's charm, cherishing memories from the Andes to Toronto.
Homeward Bound, Heart Full
As the sun sets on my incredible journey through Peru, I find myself reflecting on the vibrant experiences and breathtaking landscapes that have filled the past nine days. From the challenging heights of the Ausangate Trek to the cultural depths of Cusco, every moment has been a precious gem. Today, the final day of our adventure, was a beautiful culmination of all that this country has to offer, blending ancient wonders with the simple joys of local life. As I prepare to board my flight back to Toronto, my heart is full of memories and a profound appreciation for the warmth and beauty of Peru.
Novotel Cusco Restaurant. The hotel's charming colonial atmosphere, with its beautiful stone courtyard, provided the perfect setting to reminisce about our trek and plan for the day ahead. The breakfast buffet was amazing, offering everything from fresh, seasonal fruits to hearty local dishes. I especially enjoyed the assortment of fresh juices and the strong Peruvian coffee, which gave me the perfect boost for our final day of exploration. It's amazing how much I've come to appreciate a good cup of coffee after those chilly nights on the mountain.

The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body.
Machu Picchu, the crown jewel of the Andes, was our first stop. Even though I had seen countless photos, nothing could have prepared me for the sheer magnificence of this ancient city. The early morning light cast a golden glow over the stone structures, creating an ethereal atmosphere that transported us back in time. Exploring the ruins with my friends, we marveled at the intricate stonework and the ingenuity of the Inca civilization. I took some time to hike a portion of the Inca Trail, imagining what life might have been like for those who walked these paths centuries ago. The views from the Sun Gate were simply breathtaking, offering a panoramic vista of the entire sanctuary. It was a truly spiritual experience, and I felt a deep connection to the history and culture of this land.

Cochahuasi Animal Sanctuary, a place dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating native Peruvian wildlife. This visit was particularly touching for me, given my passion for environmental sustainability and animal welfare. We saw majestic Andean condors, playful pumas, and adorable llamas and alpacas. The sanctuary's mission is to protect these animals and educate the public about the importance of conservation. I was particularly moved by the stories of the rescued animals, many of whom had been victims of abuse or illegal trafficking. It was inspiring to see the dedication and compassion of the sanctuary staff, and I left with a renewed commitment to supporting their important work. Jasmine, my daughter, would have absolutely loved this place, especially the chance to get up close with the animals.

Inti House, a local restaurant known for its traditional Peruvian cuisine. The restaurant's cozy atmosphere and friendly service made us feel right at home. I decided to try the Cuy al Horno, a traditional baked guinea pig dish, which was surprisingly delicious. The meat was tender and flavorful, and the accompanying salsa criolla added a zesty kick. My friends opted for the Sopa de Quinoa, a hearty and nutritious soup made with local quinoa and vegetables. It was the perfect meal to warm us up after a day of exploring. The restaurant is an expression of the cultural traditions of the Cusco region, so I felt like I was having an authentic Peruvian experience.

Mercado Central de San Pedro. This bustling market is a sensory feast, with colorful displays of fruits, vegetables, textiles, and handicrafts. Designed by Gustave Eiffel, the market has become an important symbol of Cusco's urban culture. I wandered through the maze of stalls, marveling at the variety of local products and the lively interactions between vendors and customers. I picked up some alpaca wool scarves and a few handmade souvenirs for my family back home. It was a great opportunity to practice my Spanish and learn more about the local culture. The market was incredibly busy, especially in the morning, and it was clear that most of the stall owners and customers were locals from Cusco.

Republica Del Pisco, a restaurant known for its innovative pisco cocktails and Peruvian cuisine. The restaurant's lively atmosphere and live music created a festive ambiance. I savored a classic Pisco Sour, while my friends tried some of the more adventurous cocktails on the menu. For dinner, I opted for the Lomo Saltado, a traditional Peruvian stir-fry with beef, onions, and peppers, served with rice and fries. It was the perfect way to end our culinary journey through Peru. We reminisced about our adventures, sharing stories and laughter, as the band played traditional Peruvian music.
