Whispers of Ancient Cedars and Coastal Views

Today was a day of contrasts, blending the serene majesty of Yakushima's ancient forests with the rugged beauty of its coastline. It's amazing how this island manages to pack so much natural wonder into one place. I felt a deep sense of connection to both the land and sea today, a feeling I know I'll carry with me long after we leave.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Smiley. This cozy café near Anbo Port is just the kind of place I adore, with its warm atmosphere and homemade goodies. I opted for a simple muffin and coffee, while some of my friends went for the soup and sandwiches. It's amazing how a good breakfast can set the tone for the entire day. I made sure to grab a Yakushima-themed cookie before we left – a perfect little souvenir.

Fueled up and ready to go, we headed towards the Kigensugi Cedar. The drive itself was an experience, winding through lush mountain roads. As we ascended, the air grew cooler and the vegetation denser. It felt like entering another world, far removed from the sunny beaches we had explored earlier in the week. Upon arrival, the Kigensugi Cedar stood tall. It’s considered to be the biggest Yakusugi cedar tree accessible by car. Standing before this ancient giant, estimated to be around 3,000 years old, was truly humbling. Its weathered trunk and the epiphytes clinging to its branches told a story of resilience and survival.
Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.

After spending some time soaking in the Kigensugi's grandeur, we made our way to the Yakushima-todai Lighthouse. The drive took us along more winding roads, offering glimpses of the island's stunning coastline. When we arrived at the lighthouse, the panoramic views were simply breathtaking. The vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean stretched out before us, with the islands of Kouerrabu, Mishima and Kyushu visible in the distance. It was a perfect spot for contemplation, and I spent a good while simply gazing out at the horizon, feeling the sea breeze on my face. The lighthouse itself, though unmanned, stood as a stoic guardian of the sea. I could only imagine the countless ships it had guided safely over the years.

For lunch, we decided to try Subarashi Indian Restaurant. I know, Indian food in Japan might seem a bit out of place, but after days of Japanese cuisine, we were all craving something different. And Subarashi did not disappoint! The vegetarian curry I ordered was flavorful and satisfying, and my friends who opted for the non-vegetarian dishes raved about them too. It's amazing to find such diverse culinary experiences even on a remote island like Yakushima.

As the day wound down, we gathered at Cafe & Bar RainTree for a nightcap. This place is a unique blend of café and karaoke bar, and it was the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring. While none of us were brave enough to take the stage, we enjoyed listening to the locals belt out their favorite tunes. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, and the drinks were potent. It was a fun way to experience a different side of Yakushima's culture. I stuck to a refreshing coffee.

Tomorrow marks the end of our Yakushima adventure. We plan to visit the Yakushima Environmental and Cultural Village Center and the Yakushima Sea Turtle Hall. It will be a day of reflection, as we soak in the last of this island's unique charm. Before heading to the airport, we plan to grab breakfast at Aqua Cafe, lunch at Matsutake, and a final dinner at SamPotei. I’m also hoping to pick up a few last-minute souvenirs at Yakushima BLESS.

As I sit here writing, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences we've had on this incredible island. From the ancient cedar forests to the rugged coastline, from the delicious food to the warm hospitality of the locals, Yakushima has captured a piece of my heart. I know I'll be back someday, to explore more of its hidden corners and rediscover its magic. And perhaps next time, I'll even brave the karaoke stage at RainTree!

David would have loved this trip. I know he would have been just as awestruck by the ancient cedars and the stunning coastal views. I miss him terribly, especially on adventures like this. But I know he's with me in spirit, cheering me on as I explore new corners of the world.

And Jasmine, well, she would have been all over the karaoke at RainTree! She's got a voice like an angel, and she loves to perform. I'll have to bring her back here someday, so she can experience the magic of Yakushima for herself. She would love the Yakushima Environmental and Cultural Village Center and the Yakushima Sea Turtle Hall. She is so passionate about the environment and animals. I can see her working here one day!

Until tomorrow,
