Exploring the Charms of Marrakech with Friends
Day 10: A Day of Ancient Echoes and Modern Rhythms in Marrakech
Exploring Marrakech's historical Madrasa Ben Youssef and Almoravid Koubba, capped off with dinner and jazz at Dar Essalam and The Lotus Club.
Marrakech Through the Ages
Today was a journey through time, a day where the ancient heart of Marrakech beat in harmony with its modern, vibrant soul. From the hushed halls of a historic madrasa to the rhythmic beats of a jazz club, Marrakech revealed itself in layers, each more captivating than the last. Exploring these historical sites with my friends was a great experience and I can't wait to relay it to you all.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Le Bistro Arabe, a Moroccan Jazz Restaurant. The jazz music was so soothing and the atmosphere was incredible!
Fueled by a delightful breakfast and eager anticipation, our first stop was the Madrasa Ben Youssef. Stepping through its towering entrance felt like crossing a threshold into another world. The intricate details of the architecture immediately captivated us. Every corner told a story of centuries past, of scholars and seekers of knowledge who once filled these halls. The Ben Youssef Madrasa, an architectural treasure nestled in the heart of the ancient Medina of Marrakech, embodies an invaluable historical significance.

The zellij tiles, with their geometric and floral motifs, were a testament to the artistry of the time. I could almost hear the echoes of students reciting verses from the Quran within those walls. The central courtyard, a masterpiece of serenity, was the vibrant heart of the madrasa, where exchanges between students, teachers, and thinkers once flourished. It was easy to imagine scholars from distant lands converging here to deepen their knowledge in religious sciences, philosophy, medicine, and mathematics. The refined Zellige tiles with sumptuous geometric and floral motifs adorn the walls, bearing witness to the accomplished art of the time.
Wandering through the student rooms, I was struck by their simplicity. These modest spaces, arranged around the courtyard, evoked the humility of the apprentice-scholars of yesteryears, providing an environment conducive to study and meditation. It was a humbling experience to walk in the footsteps of those who had dedicated their lives to learning and spiritual growth.
From the Madrasa, we ventured to the Almoravid Koubba, a short walk away. This ancient structure, one of the oldest monuments in Marrakech, offered a glimpse into the city's early Islamic architecture. Built in the 12th century, the Koubba was originally a place of ablution, where worshippers would perform ritual washing before prayers at the nearby Ben Youssef Mosque. The Almoravid Koubba, also known as Qubbat al-Murabitin, is one of the oldest and most significant historical monuments in Marrakech.

The Koubba's architecture is a testament to the skill and artistry of Almoravid builders. I was particularly fascinated by the underground water system, a sophisticated network of channels that supplied water to the mosque and surrounding area. It was a marvel of engineering for its time, showcasing the advanced knowledge and innovation of the Almoravids.
Standing within the Koubba, I felt a sense of connection to the past, to the generations of people who had walked these same stones, who had sought solace and purification in this sacred space. It was a reminder of the enduring power of faith and the importance of preserving our cultural heritage. The Almoravid Koubba is a protected historical site and an important cultural landmark in Marrakech.
Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.
After a morning steeped in history, we were ready for a change of pace. Le Trou Au Mur Restaurant and Roof terrace was our chosen spot for lunch, and it did not disappoint. The name translates to “a hole in the wall,” and finding it felt like discovering a hidden gem. The rooftop terrace offered a peaceful escape from the bustling streets below, with a stunning view of the city.

The menu was a delightful mix of traditional Moroccan dishes and international flavors. I opted for a tagine, of course, and it was bursting with flavour. The ambiance is warm and welcoming, and the interior design is beautiful, with lovely paintings adorning the walls. It was the perfect place to relax and recharge before our evening adventures. The service is impeccable, with knowledgeable waiters who can recommend the best dishes and wines.
As the sun began to set, we made our way to Dar Essalam for dinner. This restaurant is steeped in history and tradition, and it felt like stepping into a scene from a classic film. The decor was opulent, with intricate mosaics, plush carpets, and soft lighting. The atmosphere was magical, enhanced by live music and traditional Moroccan entertainment. This place is famous for its great service and friendly staff, that is always ready to help you.

The food was a feast for the senses, a symphony of flavors and aromas. We savored traditional Moroccan dishes, each prepared with care and attention to detail. The couscous was light and fluffy, the tagines were rich and flavorful, and the pastries were sweet and decadent. It was a culinary journey that transported us to the heart of Moroccan culture. There is no point in attending this restaurant unless you want the most inauthentic display of Moroccan culture, but I still had a great time!
To cap off our evening, we headed to The Lotus Club, a renowned bar known for its vibrant atmosphere and live music. As soon as we walked through the door, we were enveloped in a world of music and color. The bar was buzzing with energy, filled with people from all walks of life, locals and tourists alike. The Lotus Club Marrakech has become a must for visitors seeking an unforgettable nightlife experience in Marrakech.

The jazz band was in full swing, their music filling the air with infectious rhythms. We ordered cocktails and settled in to enjoy the show. The Lotus Club is known for its innovative and varied Moroccan cuisine with refined flavors, as well as a Japanese corner and a selection of international cuisine.
As the night wore on, the music grew louder, the dancing more energetic. We found ourselves swept up in the revelry, laughing and singing along with the band. It was a perfect ending to a day that had been filled with history, culture, and culinary delights.
Marrakech had truly captured my heart. Its ancient echoes and modern rhythms had created a symphony of experiences that I would never forget. As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore this magical city with my friends.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore the serene Cyber Park Arsat Moulay Abdesalam and the Menara Gardens, seeking out moments of tranquility amidst the city's vibrant energy. We'll start our day with breakfast at Café Babouche medina, followed by lunch at Le Nid´cigogne, and dinner at Les Terrasses Des Arts Marrakech. And, of course, no trip to Marrakech would be complete without a visit to the Souk Jdid, where I hope to find some unique treasures to take home.
Until tomorrow!
