Day 9: High Atlas Adventures: Trekking Through Morocco's Majestic Mountains
Embark on a breathtaking High Atlas trek, savoring Moroccan cuisine, culture, and stunning vistas, while creating unforgettable memories.
A Day Among Giants
Today was nothing short of spectacular. Leaving the vibrant hues of Marrakech behind, we ventured into the heart of the High Atlas Mountains. The air grew crisp and clean, and the landscape transformed into a rugged panorama of towering peaks and verdant valleys. It was a day of breathtaking views, cultural immersion, and delicious food – a true feast for the senses.
The day started with a hearty breakfast at Henna Café. It's always a pleasure to support businesses that give back to the community. I opted for their lentil soup, which was flavorful and filling. David went for one of their salads. Fuelled up, we met our guide, Omar, who was arranged by the Riad. He was a Berber local with an infectious enthusiasm for his homeland. Together with my friends, we set off on our High Atlas trekking adventure, eager to experience the raw beauty of Morocco's mountain range. I was careful to use sunscreen, as I'd forgotten it the first few days and got a bit of a burn.
As we ascended, the views became increasingly dramatic. The Atlas Mountains stretched out before us, a tapestry of rocky slopes, snow-capped peaks, and hidden Berber villages. Omar shared stories of the Berber people, their traditions, and their deep connection to the land. It was fascinating to learn about their way of life and their resilience in the face of the challenging mountain environment.
The mountains are a reminder that no matter how small we may feel, we are part of something much larger and more enduring.
We paused to take in the Atlas mountains view. It was a truly awe-inspiring sight. The vastness of the landscape was humbling, a reminder of the power and beauty of nature. I snapped countless photos, trying to capture the grandeur of the scene, but no image could truly do it justice. You just have to be there to experience it. Jasmine would have loved this. I must remember to bring her back one day.
For lunch, Omar led us to Un Déjeuner a Marrakech, a charming spot nestled in a valley with panoramic views. We feasted on traditional Moroccan cuisine – tagine, couscous, and fresh salads – all bursting with flavor and spices. The restaurant had a French influence, blending Moroccan flavors with French cooking techniques. It was a delightful culinary experience, enhanced by the stunning surroundings. I'm so glad we decided to try something different from tagines and couscous, though I love those too.
After lunch, we continued our trek, passing through Berber villages where children waved and smiled, and donkeys laden with goods ambled along the narrow paths. We learned about the elaborate water irrigation systems that the Berbers have developed over centuries, allowing them to cultivate crops in this arid landscape. Their ingenuity and resourcefulness were truly inspiring.
In the late afternoon, as we made our way back towards Marrakech, we stopped at Marrakech Soul, a shop recommended by Omar. I was looking for a special memento of our trip. The shop was a treasure trove of handcrafted goods, from leather bags and pottery to jewelry and textiles. I finally settled on a beautiful Berber rug, woven with intricate patterns and vibrant colors. It was the perfect reminder of our day in the High Atlas Mountains.
Before heading back to the riad, we had dinner at Dar Zellij. It was an experience in itself, with the restaurant located in a beautifully restored 17th-century palace. The ambiance was magical, with live music and candlelight creating a romantic and elegant atmosphere. The food was sublime, a refined take on traditional Moroccan dishes. The service was impeccable, with attentive staff dressed in traditional attire. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day.
I savored beef shin tagine with prunes and almonds, while my friends tried the lamb couscous. We all agreed that it was one of the best meals we had had in Marrakech. The flavors were complex and nuanced, the presentation was exquisite, and the overall experience was unforgettable. It's a bit pricier than other places, but it's worth it.
As I reflect on today's adventure, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and culture of the High Atlas Mountains. It was a day of physical exertion, mental stimulation, and spiritual renewal. I feel a deep connection to this land and its people, and I am eager to explore more of Morocco's hidden treasures.
Tomorrow, we're planning to explore the Madrasa Ben Youssef and the Almoravid Koubba. I'm also excited to check out The Lotus Club for a nightcap. I'm sure it will be another day filled with unforgettable experiences.
The adapter I forgot to pack has been a pain, I will need to pick one up tomorrow!
