A Day of Discovery in Parikia

Today marked the official start of our family adventure in Paros, and what a day it was! Leaving the familiar hustle of Toronto behind, I was eager to immerse myself in the island's rich history and culture. Paros, with its sun-kissed landscapes and ancient ruins, promised a journey through time, and it certainly delivered. I was excited to share this experience with David and Jasmine, hoping to create memories that would last a lifetime.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Oasis All Day Restaurant Cafe. Sipping on strong Greek coffee while enjoying fresh pastries, we fueled up for a day of exploration. The cafe's vibrant atmosphere and friendly locals set the perfect tone for our Parian adventure. With our bellies full and spirits high, we set off to explore the historical treasures of Parikia.

Our first stop was the magnificent Holy Shrine of the Virgin Mary Ekatontapyliani, also known as the Church of 100 Doors. As we approached the church, its impressive Byzantine architecture immediately captivated us. The church’s name, Ekatontapyliani, translates to 'the church with a hundred doors'. Stepping inside, I was struck by the serene atmosphere and the palpable sense of history. The architecture showcased the evolution of Byzantine design, blending early Christian elements with the grandeur of the Justinian era. The church is one of the most important Byzantine monuments in Greece and a must-visit site for history and culture enthusiasts. Founded in the 4th century AD, it is said to have been built by the mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great. Legend has it that Saint Helen, Constantine’s mother, vowed to build a magnificent church dedicated to the Virgin Mary if she found the True Cross. The intricate frescoes and beautifully crafted icons told stories of faith and devotion. Jasmine was particularly fascinated by the legends surrounding the church's origins, while David, ever the architect at heart, admired the structural details and the seamless blend of different architectural styles.

Visiting Ekatontapyliani is not just about seeing a historical site; it's about feeling the weight of centuries of faith and devotion.

After spending a good part of the morning at Ekatontapyliani, soaking in its spiritual ambiance, we made our way to the Archaeological Museum of Paros. The museum, located in Parikia, is a treasure trove of artifacts discovered during excavations on Paros and Antiparos. As we walked through the museum, we were transported back in time, marveling at the ancient Greek pottery, sculptures, and inscriptions that offered insights into the island's rich cultural heritage. The museum was founded in 1960 and consists of two rooms and an atrium.

Among the notable exhibits, the marble statue of Gorgo, a mythical woman whose gaze could petrify onlookers, stood out. Jasmine was intrigued by the statue of Nike (Victory), dating back to 470 BC. Though missing its head, arms, and wings, it remained an iconic piece of ancient art. The museum also featured Cycladic figurines, mosaics, and a bust of the poet Archilochus, spanning from the Neolithic period to early Christian times.

David, with his keen interest in history, was particularly drawn to the Parian Marble and the Cycladian Frying Pan. He spent a considerable amount of time examining the exhibits, sharing interesting facts and anecdotes with Jasmine and me. I appreciated how the museum provided a comprehensive overview of the island's history, from the Neolithic period to the Roman era.

Leaving the museum, we strolled through the charming streets of Parikia, eventually reaching the Frankish Castle. Built in the 13th century by the Franks, the castle stands on a hill overlooking Parikia, offering stunning views of the town and the Aegean Sea. The castle was built by the Venetian Sanoudo family on the site of the ancient acropolis. As we climbed the hill, we imagined what life was like for the people who lived there centuries ago, defending the island from pirate attacks.

The castle is also known as Frangokastelo by the locals. What’s particularly interesting about the Frankish Castle is that its structural materials came from the ruins of ancient temples that were located in the surrounding area. Exploring the remains of its walls and towers, we admired the blend of architectural styles, a testament to the island's diverse history. The views from the top were breathtaking, with the sparkling Aegean Sea stretching out before us. The remnants of the castle walls, interspersed with whitewashed houses, created a picturesque scene that perfectly captured the essence of Paros.

After a morning filled with historical exploration, we were ready for a leisurely lunch. We chose Levantis Restaurant, known for its authentic Parian cuisine and charming ambiance. The restaurant's tranquil garden setting was a welcome respite from the midday sun. We indulged in fresh seafood, traditional Greek salads, and local wine, savoring every bite. The flavors were vibrant and fresh, a true reflection of the island's culinary heritage. Jasmine, who is usually a picky eater, surprised us by trying and enjoying the grilled octopus, a local delicacy.

With our appetites satisfied, we decided to explore the local shops. Handmade With Love In Paros caught my eye with its array of unique, handcrafted souvenirs. I found several beautiful pieces of jewelry made from local materials, perfect reminders of our trip. Jasmine, of course, gravitated towards the colorful scarves and bohemian-style clothing. David, ever practical, picked up a few bottles of local olive oil and honey to take back home to Toronto.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Apollon Garden Restaurant for dinner. The restaurant, with its romantic setting and exquisite menu, was the perfect place to unwind after a busy day. We enjoyed a delicious meal of traditional Greek dishes, accompanied by live music. The atmosphere was relaxed and convivial, with locals and tourists alike enjoying the warm September evening.

Reflecting on our first day in Paros, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this beautiful island with my family. From the spiritual aura of Ekatontapyliani to the historical treasures of the Archaeological Museum and the panoramic views from the Frankish Castle, every moment was filled with discovery and wonder. As we strolled back to the Argonauta Hotel, the stars twinkled above us, casting a magical glow on the whitewashed buildings of Parikia. I couldn't wait to see what adventures tomorrow would bring, with plans to visit the Mycenaean Acropolis, the Cave of Archilochos, and the iconic Windmill. Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Mycenaean Acropolis (Koukounaries), the Cave of Archilochos, and the Windmill. And perhaps end the day at the Golden Garden Cocktail Bar.

“To move, to breathe, to fly, to float, To gain all while you give, To roam the roads of lands remote, To travel is to live.” – Hans Christian Andersen

As I drifted off to sleep, I thought about how lucky I am to share these experiences with David and Jasmine. Traveling as a family brings us closer, creating bonds that withstand the test of time. And as a community outreach coordinator focused on environmental sustainability, I appreciate the opportunity to connect with different cultures and learn about their unique approaches to preserving their heritage. It’s experiences like these that enrich my life and inspire my work back in Toronto.

I am also reminded of the adapter and beach towels that I forgot. I will need to buy them tomorrow. But I am looking forward to tomorrow.
