Family Adventure in Paros: Exploring Greece's Idyllic Island
Day 2: Ancient Echoes and Sunset Hues: A Day of Discovery in Paros
Uncover Paros's history at Mycenaean Acropolis, find inspiration at Archilochos Cave, and bask in the sunset at a charming windmill.
Whispers of the Past, Visions of Today
Today was a beautiful blend of ancient history, serene reflection, and vibrant island life. Paros continues to enchant me with its ability to hold onto its past while embracing the present. From exploring archaeological sites to savoring local flavors, each moment was a delightful discovery.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Hibiscus Restaurant in Parikia. The restaurant is the oldest in Paros, running since 1952!. It had a relaxed and elegant atmosphere, not to mention the exquisite menu of local delicacies. Jasmine was thrilled with her handmade pizza, cooked in a wood-fired oven, while David enjoyed the lamb. I opted for a traditional Greek yogurt with honey and nuts, a perfect start to fuel our day of exploration.

After breakfast, we set off to discover the Mycenaean Acropolis (Koukounaries). The Acropolis is located on the rocky Koukounaries Hill. Built around 1200 BC, this ancient settlement once boasted a palace and formidable 'cyclopean' walls. Though time has weathered the site, the views from the hill were simply breathtaking. Jasmine, always the history enthusiast, was captivated by the scattered pottery and ruins, imagining what life must have been like during that era. David, ever the pragmatist, was more impressed by the defensive location and the panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. I found myself contemplating the lives of those who once called this place home, their stories etched into the very stones beneath our feet.

The past is never dead. It's not even past.
Next on our itinerary was the Cave of Archilochos. This cave, a short drive from Parikia, is said to have inspired the great lyric poet Archilochos. According to legend, Archilochos sought refuge in this cave to find inspiration for his poetry. The cave itself is set amidst a stunning landscape of steep rocks and crashing waves. Jasmine was fascinated by the legend of Archilochos finding inspiration here, and she even tried her hand at writing a few lines of poetry. David enjoyed the rugged beauty of the coastline, while I appreciated the sense of tranquility that pervaded the cave. It was easy to see why a poet would seek solace and inspiration in such a place.

For lunch, we headed to Taverna Alexandros, a charming Greek restaurant known for its authentic cuisine and sea views. We savored traditional dishes like moussaka, fresh seafood, and various mezes. The moussaka served in a clay pot was particularly noteworthy. The staff was warm and welcoming, making us feel like part of their family. David and Jasmine shared a grilled fish platter, while I opted for a vegetarian Imam, a local dish of eggplant with onions, tomato, and feta cheese. It was utterly delicious ! As we ate, we watched the boats bobbing in the harbor and soaked in the lively atmosphere of Parikia.

In the late afternoon, we visited the iconic Windmill of Parikia. This traditional windmill, a prominent landmark of the island, stands proudly at the port. It has been completely restored to its traditional form. As the sun began to set, we climbed to the top of a nearby hill to get a better view of the windmill against the backdrop of the Aegean Sea. The sky was ablaze with color, painting a breathtaking picture that I know I will never forget. It was the perfect way to end our day of exploration.

Before dinner, we decided to try the Golden Garden Cocktail Bar for some refreshments. Tucked away in the landscapes of Paros, the Golden Garden Cocktail Bar has a vibrant aura. The bar draws inspiration from global trends and local ingredients, and the bartenders concoct a dazzling array of beverages. Sipping on exotic fruit cocktails while listening to chill-out music, we felt completely relaxed and rejuvenated. Jasmine enjoyed a non-alcoholic smoothie, while David and I sampled some of their signature cocktails. The bar was an oasis of connectivity, with cozy corners and communal spaces that encouraged interaction.

For dinner, we chose MIRA RESTAURANT, known for its Greek food made with local products and fresh ideas. The chefs prepare meals each day and they have daily specials. We sat at a table overlooking the sea, enjoying the cool evening breeze. The menu was a culinary journey through the Greek islands, with modern twists on traditional dishes. David raved about the catch of the day, while Jasmine devoured a plate of homemade pasta. I savored a slow-cooked lamb dish, infused with local herbs and spices. The meal was a perfect ending to a day filled with exploration and discovery.

We stopped for a nightcap at a small taverna, listening to traditional Greek music and watching the locals dance. It was a perfect way to immerse ourselves in the island's culture and create lasting memories.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Pirate’s Cave, visit the Agios Fokas Lighthouse, and delve into history at the Paros Byzantine Museum. I’m also looking forward to doing some shopping at White In Paros. Good night from Paros!
