Solo Cultural Sojourn in Kyoto
Day 3: A Day of Serenity and Bamboo in Arashiyama
Discover the tranquil beauty of Arashiyama, from its iconic bamboo forest to serene temples, a perfect escape in Kyoto's early spring.
Whispers in the Bamboo
Today was a day of escaping the city’s hustle and embracing the serene beauty of Arashiyama. I was eager to immerse myself in nature and explore the famed bamboo forest, a place I had only ever dreamt of visiting. The promise of tranquility and natural splendor was a welcome change of pace, and I couldn't wait to see what the day would bring.
My day began with a delightful breakfast at Masayoshi Japanese Dining. It was a cozy spot, and I enjoyed a traditional Japanese breakfast that was both comforting and energizing, setting the perfect tone for a day of exploration. Fuelled up, I set off towards Arashiyama. The journey itself was part of the experience, watching the city slowly fade into a landscape of rolling hills and traditional houses.
Arriving in Arashiyama, I immediately felt a sense of calm wash over me. The air was fresh, and the sounds of the city were replaced by the gentle rustling of leaves and the distant murmur of the Katsura River. It was exactly the escape I needed. As I strolled through the town, I couldn't help but notice the quaint shops and tea houses that lined the streets, each exuding its own unique charm. I made a mental note to explore them later, but for now, my destination was the famed Arashiyama Bamboo Forest.
The entrance to the bamboo forest was almost like stepping into another world. Towering stalks of bamboo reached towards the sky, creating a canopy of green that filtered the sunlight into soft, dappled patterns on the path. It was truly breathtaking. I walked slowly, taking in the sights, sounds, and smells of this natural wonder. The air was cool and crisp, and the gentle sway of the bamboo created a soothing, almost meditative atmosphere.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.
It wasn't long before I realized that I wasn't alone in this tranquil paradise. Despite the early hour, the bamboo forest was already bustling with tourists from all corners of the globe. Families, couples, and solo travelers like myself were all eager to experience the magic of this iconic location. While I tried to embrace the shared experience, I couldn't help but feel a tinge of disappointment that the serenity I had hoped for was somewhat compromised.
Undeterred, I continued my journey deeper into the forest, hoping to find a quiet spot where I could truly connect with nature. I ventured off the main path, exploring some of the lesser-known trails that wound through the bamboo groves. It was here, away from the crowds, that I finally found the peace I was seeking. I sat down on a moss-covered rock, closed my eyes, and simply listened to the sounds of the forest. The gentle rustling of the bamboo, the chirping of birds, and the distant murmur of the river all combined to create a symphony of nature that washed over me, cleansing my mind and soothing my soul.
After spending some time in quiet contemplation, I decided to explore another of Arashiyama's treasures: Tenryu-ji Temple. This Zen temple, located adjacent to the bamboo forest, is renowned for its stunning gardens, which have survived in their original form since the 14th century. As I entered the temple grounds, I was immediately struck by the sense of history and tranquility that permeated the air.

The gardens of Tenryu-ji were a masterpiece of landscape design. A central pond, surrounded by meticulously manicured rocks, pine trees, and the forested Arashiyama mountains, created a scene of breathtaking beauty. I wandered along the winding pathways, admiring the carefully placed stones, the vibrant azaleas, and the serene reflections in the water. It was a feast for the senses, and I felt a sense of awe and wonder at the skill and artistry of the garden's creators. I learned that the garden was designed by Muso Soseki, a famous garden designer, who used the concept of “borrowed scenery”, integrating the surrounding mountains into the garden's design. It was ingenious!
The temple buildings themselves were equally impressive. Although most of the current halls date from the Meiji Period, they exuded a sense of history and grandeur. I explored the main hall, the drawing hall, and the temple kitchen, each offering a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Japan. It was fascinating to learn about the temple's history, which dates back to 1339 when it was built by the ruling shogun Ashikaga Takauji to appease the spirit of Emperor Go-Daigo.
By lunchtime, my stomach was starting to rumble, so I made my way to Arash's Kitchen for a bite to eat. I had heard great things about their Persian and Indian Halal cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, and the aroma of spices filled the air. I decided to try their authentic Persian naan and a flavorful kebab, and I was not disappointed. The food was delicious, and the service was warm and friendly. It was the perfect way to refuel after a morning of exploring.

After lunch, I decided to indulge in some retail therapy at the Kyoto Crafts Store. I wanted to find a unique souvenir to remind me of my time in Arashiyama, and this store seemed like the perfect place to do so. As I browsed the shelves, I was amazed by the variety and quality of the crafts on display. From delicate ceramics to intricate textiles to beautifully carved wooden objects, there was something for everyone.

I finally settled on a small, hand-painted ceramic bowl, which I thought would be perfect for holding my collection of Gombey seeds. It was a beautiful piece of art, and I knew that every time I looked at it, I would be reminded of my peaceful day in Arashiyama. I also picked up a few postcards to send to Jasmine and David, eager to share my experiences with them.
As the day drew to a close, I made my way to THE SODOH HIGASHIYAMA KYOTO for dinner. This restaurant, housed in a beautifully restored traditional Japanese building, offered a unique dining experience that I was eager to try. The atmosphere was elegant and refined, and the service was impeccable. I opted for the Italian set menu, and each dish was a work of art, both visually and culinary. The flavors were exquisite, and the presentation was stunning. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

Reflecting on my day in Arashiyama, I realized that it was more than just a sightseeing trip. It was a journey of self-discovery, a chance to connect with nature, and an opportunity to immerse myself in the rich cultural heritage of Japan. While the crowds at the bamboo forest were a bit of a distraction, I was able to find moments of peace and tranquility that nourished my soul. And the beauty of Tenryu-ji Temple, the delicious food, and the unique crafts all added to the magic of the day.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore Kyoto Imperial Palace, Gion, and Yasaka Shrine. I’m particularly looking forward to wandering through Gion, hoping to catch a glimpse of a geisha. I’m also excited to try the local cuisine at Komefuku for breakfast, Kikunoi Roan for lunch, and Pound Sanjo-Kiyamachi for dinner. Perhaps I'll even unwind at Bar Fishbowl in the evening. It sounds like another day filled with cultural immersion and delightful experiences!
