Kyoto Awakening: A Day of Discovery

The first day of my solo adventure in Kyoto was nothing short of magical. It was a day where ancient traditions met modern flavors, and where the spirit of Japan truly began to seep into my soul. From the moment I stepped out of The Hiramatsu Kyoto, I knew I was in for an unforgettable experience.

My day began with a delightful vegan breakfast at AIN SOPH. Journey KYOTO. Finding a completely vegan restaurant in Kyoto felt like a small miracle, and I was eager to start my day with a nourishing meal. The restaurant was tucked away on a quiet backstreet, a serene escape from the bustling city. I opted for their famous vegan pancakes, and oh my goodness, they were heavenly! Fluffy, light, and topped with soy ice cream and whipped cream, it was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. It reminded me of the vegan pancakes Jasmine and I tried at that little cafe in Kensington Market last year. It's amazing how different cultures interpret similar dishes, but the underlying principle is always the same: good food brings joy.

With a satisfied stomach, I made my way to Fushimi Inari Shrine (Thousand Torii Gates). The train ride itself was a treat, offering glimpses of the Kyoto landscape. As I approached the shrine, the iconic vermilion torii gates came into view, snaking up the mountainside like a vibrant, never-ending tunnel. The sheer scale of it was breathtaking. Walking through those gates felt like stepping into another world, a world steeped in history and spirituality. The atmosphere was thick with the scent of incense and the murmur of prayers. Foxes, the messengers of the rice god Inari, were everywhere – in stone statues, in paintings, and even in the small trinkets sold by vendors. It was fascinating to learn about their significance and how they are seen as protectors of the rice fields. I even saw a couple of women in beautiful white kimonos taking photos, adding to the already picturesque scene.

The climb to the top was quite the workout, but every step was worth it. As I ascended, the crowds thinned out, and I found myself surrounded by the tranquil beauty of the forest. Small shrines dotted the path, each with its own unique charm and offering a moment of quiet reflection. Reaching the summit, I was rewarded with panoramic views of Kyoto sprawling beneath me. It was a moment of pure serenity, a chance to connect with the landscape and appreciate the rich history that permeated every corner of this ancient city. It made me think about how different this was from the hustle and bustle of Toronto.

After descending from the mountain, my stomach started to rumble again, so I headed towards Nishiki Market, known as Kyoto's Kitchen. The market was a sensory overload in the best possible way. Narrow streets teemed with vendors selling everything from fresh seafood and local produce to pickled vegetables and traditional sweets. The aromas were intoxicating, a mix of savory and sweet that made my mouth water. I sampled various delicacies, from grilled skewers of octopus to delicate mochi. It was fascinating to see the incredible variety of ingredients and the artistry with which they were prepared. I even spotted some Kyoto souvenirs, and made a mental note to come back later for some gift shopping.

For lunch, I decided to try Katsukura - Kyoto Porta, a restaurant specializing in tonkatsu. I had heard great things about their pork cutlets, and I was eager to try this popular Japanese dish. The restaurant was bustling with activity, but I managed to snag a seat at the counter. The tonkatsu was cooked to perfection – crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. I especially enjoyed grinding my own sesame seeds for the dipping sauce, adding a personal touch to the meal. It was a hearty and satisfying lunch, a perfect way to recharge after a busy morning.

In the late afternoon, I dedicated some time to shopping for souvenirs at Souvenir Kyoto. I wanted to find something special to bring back home, something that would capture the essence of my Kyoto experience. The shop had a wide array of local crafts, sweets, and trinkets. I ended up buying a beautiful silk scarf with a traditional Japanese design for myself, and some small matcha flavored treats for David and Jasmine. I hope they'll appreciate a little taste of Kyoto.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Gion for dinner at Gion Nanba. This Michelin-starred kaiseki restaurant promised an exquisite culinary experience, and it did not disappoint. The restaurant was tucked away in a quiet alley, exuding an air of elegance and sophistication. The kaiseki dinner was a work of art, a multi-course meal that showcased the freshest seasonal ingredients and the chef's impeccable skills. Each dish was a miniature masterpiece, a delicate balance of flavors and textures that delighted the senses. From the sashimi to the grilled fish to the delicate desserts, every bite was a revelation.

The service was impeccable, the staff attentive and knowledgeable, explaining each dish with grace and precision. It was an unforgettable dining experience, a true celebration of Japanese cuisine. As I savored the last course, I reflected on the day's adventures, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and culture of Kyoto. It was a day filled with wonder, discovery, and culinary delights, a perfect start to my solo journey.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Kinkaku-ji (the Golden Pavilion), Ryoan-ji, and Ninna-ji Temple, and perhaps unwind at The Common One Bar Kyoto in the evening. I can already feel the excitement building up for another day of exploration. I am curious to see the rock garden at Ryoan-ji, and what it evokes in me.

“Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.” I think Ibn Battuta knew exactly what he was talking about. My first day in Kyoto has already given me so much to share, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
