Nikko's Timeless Wonders
Today marked the beginning of our family adventure in Nikko, and what a start it was! Leaving behind the familiar streets of Brampton, we stepped into a world steeped in history and tradition. Nikko, with its serene beauty and profound cultural heritage, immediately captivated us. I was excited to share this experience with Vikram and Anika, hoping to create memories that we would cherish for years to come.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Cafe Restaurant BELL. The cozy atmosphere and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee were the perfect way to kickstart our explorations. I opted for their special soy milk skin set, also known as the monk's diet, wanting to try something traditional and unique to Nikko. Vikram chose a classic Japanese breakfast set, while Anika happily munched on a pastry. It was a delightful start, and we were all energized for the day ahead.

Our first stop was the Nikko Toshogu Hōmotsukan Museum. I was eager to learn more about Tokugawa Ieyasu and the history of the Tokugawa shogunate. The museum was opened to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Tokugawa Ieyasu's death, and the exhibits were a fascinating insight into the life and times of this influential figure. I was particularly impressed by the intricate ceremonial items and historical documents on display. Anika, surprisingly, was also quite engaged, especially with the displays of helmets and weapons. It was a wonderful way to introduce her to Japanese history.

The beauty of Nikko lies not just in its scenic landscapes, but also in its ability to transport you back in time, allowing you to connect with centuries of history and tradition.
Next, we made our way to the Yōmeimon Gate, also known as the Gate of Sunlight. This gate is an absolute masterpiece of Edo-period craftsmanship. Adorned with over 500 intricate carvings depicting mythical creatures, legendary figures, and vibrant floral motifs, it was truly a sight to behold. The radiant colors, highlighted by rich gold leaf, symbolized the divine presence and power, creating an atmosphere of awe and reverence. Vikram, with his keen eye for detail, was particularly impressed by the architectural brilliance of the gate. Anika, of course, was fascinated by the numerous carvings of animals and mythical creatures. I learned that the gate is also called the Higurashimon (twilight gate), because one could gaze at it from morning till night. The sheer artistry and attention to detail were astounding.

As we approached the Yōmeimon Gate, I couldn't help but feel a sense of reverence. The imposing presence of guardian statues, believed to protect the sacred Toshogu Shrine from evil spirits, added to the mystical ambiance of the place. It was more than just an entryway; it was a journey into the soul of Japan's rich heritage.
One of the most anticipated sights of the day was the Nemuri-neko, or Sleeping Cat carving. Tucked away in the East corridor at Tōshō-gū Shrine, this small but significant carving is attributed to Hidari Jingorō, a legendary 17th-century artist. The carving depicts a cat in a seemingly peaceful slumber, but legend has it that the cat is not fully asleep, always alert to protect the shrine from any harm. It was fascinating to learn about the symbolism behind the carving. Cats are rarely depicted in shrines and temples, while sacred animals such as the crane, turtle, tiger, dragon and phoenix are commonly found. On the other side of the Sleeping Cat is a carving pair of sparrows, though cats are normally supposed to prey on them. This depiction is believed to symbolize peace, as sparrows can live freely when cats are asleep. I found it incredibly charming, and Anika was particularly taken with it.

After a morning filled with cultural immersion, we were ready for lunch. We decided to try Nikko Yubamaki ZEN, a restaurant specializing in yuba cuisine. Yuba, or tofu skin, is a local delicacy, and I was eager to try it in various forms. The restaurant offered a creative menu with dishes like Nikko yubamaki with Tochigi wagyu beef and seasonal seafood and vegetables wrapped in yuba, and their Nikko yubamaki course meal made up of many seasonal small dishes of yubamaki (rolled yuba). Vikram and I opted for the Nikko Yubamaki Gozen, a set of seven dishes including Nikko Yuba Maki, while Anika chose a simpler yuba dish that was more to her liking. The meal was an absolute delight, with each dish showcasing the delicate flavor and unique texture of yuba. It was a culinary experience that we would not soon forget.

Before dinner, we strolled through Nikko Bussan Shokai, a shop designated as a registered National Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. This charming shop offered a variety of local crafts and souvenirs. I picked up a few small items as gifts for family and friends back home, while Anika chose a cute little trinket to remind her of our trip. It was a pleasant way to support the local economy and take a piece of Nikko back with us.

For dinner, we chose Yuba Komachi, drawn in by its casual atmosphere and family-friendly vibe. They offer original Yuba cuisine and Nikko HIMITSU brand pork. I tried the Teriyaki Yuba Burger, Vikram went for a set meal featuring local pork, and Anika enjoyed a simple yuba rice bowl. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with exploration and discovery. The staff was very friendly and they had some vegetarian options.

From the serene beauty of the Nikko Toshogu Hōmotsukan Museum to the architectural marvel of the Yōmeimon Gate and the charming allure of the Nemuri-neko, Nikko had truly captured our hearts. It was a day of cultural immersion, where we learned about the rich history and traditions of Japan, and created memories that we would cherish for a lifetime.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore the natural beauty of Nikko, with visits to Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Falls. I am excited to see what adventures await us, and I am grateful for the opportunity to share this journey with my family.
Back at our hotel, I was thinking about how lucky we were to have this experience. It's these moments, away from our regular lives in Brampton, that make our family stronger and more connected. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures, especially the scenic views at Lake Chuzenji and the majestic Kegon Falls. And perhaps, a relaxing evening at Nikko Brewing to sample some local craft beers.
I'm also making a mental note to buy sunscreen and a Japanese phrasebook tomorrow – those were definitely forgotten essentials. As I drift off to sleep, I can't help but smile, thinking about all the incredible memories we're making here in Nikko. This family adventure is turning out to be everything I had hoped for, and more.
