Chasing Waterfalls and Dragon Kings

Today was all about immersing ourselves in Nikko's natural beauty and savouring its local flavours. Vikram, Anika, and I set out with a sense of adventure, ready to explore the hidden gems that this region has to offer. I was especially excited to see the waterfalls, having read so much about their serene beauty.

Our first stop was the stunning Ryuokyo Canyon. I had read it was carved out of volcanic rock from 22 million years ago! We started our day early, grabbing a quick and simple breakfast at our hotel before heading out. The train ride to Ryuokyo Station was scenic, offering glimpses of the lush countryside. As we stepped off the train, the fresh air and the promise of a day filled with natural wonders invigorated us.

The hike through Ryuokyo Canyon was nothing short of magical. The trail was well-maintained, making it easy for Anika to navigate. The path wound along the Kinugawa River, with the water's gentle murmur accompanying us. The canyon's rock formations were incredible, shaped over millennia by the river's relentless flow. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the power of nature.

Nature always wears the colors of the spirit.

We paused at the Musasabi Suspension Bridge, which offered breathtaking views down the valley. Anika was thrilled, pointing out the various rock formations and the vibrant greenery. Vikram, ever the photographer, captured the stunning vistas. I made sure to take several pictures for the blog, knowing that words alone couldn't do justice to the canyon's beauty.

Along the trail, we spotted the Goryuo Shrine, nestled on a picturesque rock promontory. The shrine, dedicated to a dragon god, added a touch of mystique to the already enchanting landscape. Anika was fascinated by the small details, from the intricate carvings to the serene atmosphere. We took a moment to appreciate the tranquility before continuing our hike.

Next up was Tamasudare Falls. After our invigorating hike through Ryuokyo Canyon, we hopped on a local bus to reach the falls. The journey was short, and soon we were standing before this hidden gem. Tamasudare Falls, though not as towering as some of Nikko's other waterfalls, possessed a unique charm. The water cascaded down the rocks like a beaded curtain, creating a mesmerizing effect. The surrounding foliage added to the falls' serene beauty. Anika was particularly captivated, calling it a fairytale waterfall.

After our nature-filled morning, we were ready for a hearty lunch. We decided to try Azuma, a restaurant known for its yuba dishes. Yuba, or tofu skin, is a local specialty, and I was eager to taste it. The restaurant was cozy, with a traditional Japanese ambiance. We ordered a variety of dishes, including yuba sashimi, yuba gyoza, and yuba soba. Each dish was a delightful culinary experience. The yuba had a delicate flavour and a unique texture, complementing the other ingredients perfectly. Anika, surprisingly, enjoyed the yuba gyoza the most, declaring it her new favourite food.

In the evening, we headed to Grill & Steak Myōgetsubō for dinner. I had read rave reviews about their Tochigi Wagyu beef steak, and I was determined to try it. The restaurant was located in a historic building, adding to its charm. The ambiance was warm and inviting, and the staff were incredibly attentive.

I opted for the Tochigi Wagyu beef steak, while Vikram chose the beef hamburger steak. Anika, always a fan of simple fare, went for the chicken. The Wagyu beef steak was an absolute delight. The meat was tender, juicy, and full of flavour. It was cooked to perfection, melting in my mouth with every bite. Vikram was equally impressed with his hamburger steak, praising its rich and savory taste. Anika thoroughly enjoyed her chicken, declaring it the best she had ever had.

Before dinner, I had a chance to chat with one of the staff members, who kindly showed me a map and pointed out a path leading to the temples. After our meal, with the evening still bright, we took a short walk up to the temple grounds. Though everything was closed, the quiet, almost empty space felt magical. It was a perfect end to a day filled with exploration and culinary delights.

To cap off our evening, Vikram and I decided to visit Wine Bar BLESS (Japanese wine only). I had read about this unique bar that served only Japanese wine. It was a cozy, intimate space with a relaxed atmosphere. We sampled a few different wines, each with its distinct flavour profile. It was a delightful way to unwind after a long day of hiking and sightseeing. Anika, of course, couldn't join us, but we promised to bring her back a small treat from a local shop tomorrow.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience Nikko's natural beauty and culinary delights. From the majestic Ryuokyo Canyon to the serene Tamasudare Falls, every moment was a feast for the senses. And the local cuisine, especially the yuba dishes and the Tochigi Wagyu beef steak, was simply divine.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Kirifuri Falls and Kirifuri Plateau. I'm excited to see what other hidden gems Nikko has in store for us. I'm also looking forward to visiting the Shimosaka Tea Stall for some local treats. It's days like these that make travelling with family so special. The shared experiences, the laughter, and the memories created are priceless.

I am also grateful that we were able to enjoy some local food and drink, which is a big part of sustainable tourism. I will have to remember to buy some sunscreen tomorrow, as I forgot to pack it today. I should also practice some Japanese phrases from my phrasebook. I am so glad that we came to Nikko, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
