A Fond Farewell to Nikko

As our family adventure in Nikko draws to a close, I wanted to savor every last moment of this enchanting place. Today was a blend of history, spirituality, and, of course, delicious food. It’s amazing how much you can pack into a single day when you’re determined to make the most of it!

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Hanamusubi Izakaya. It's quickly become a favorite spot, with its warm, inviting atmosphere. I enjoyed a comforting bowl of miso soup and some grilled fish, while Vikram opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set. Anika, ever the adventurous eater, surprised us by trying a bit of everything! It's heartwarming to see her embrace new flavors and experiences with such enthusiasm. It reminded me of the early days when Vikram and I first started exploring different cuisines together back in Brampton. Now, we’re passing that love of food and culture onto Anika.

Stepping Back in Time at Nikko Tamozawa Imperial Villa Memorial Park

After breakfast, we made our way to the Nikko Tamozawa Imperial Villa Memorial Park. I’d read about this place and was eager to explore it. The villa, once a retreat for the Imperial family, is a sprawling complex of traditional Japanese architecture and beautiful gardens. As we wandered through the villa's many rooms, I couldn't help but imagine what life must have been like for the emperors and empresses who once resided here. The intricate details of the wooden carvings, the delicate paper screens, and the serene tatami rooms transported us to another era. Anika was particularly fascinated by the hidden doors and secret passageways, turning our visit into a fun-filled game of hide-and-seek. The villa is a blend of Edo, Taisho, and Meiji era structures, a testament to Japan's rich history. I was captivated by the seamless blend of traditional Japanese design with subtle Western influences, like the English carpets laid on tatami mats in the audience hall. The wild garden was a sight to behold, especially the 400-year-old weeping cherry tree, though it wasn't in bloom during our visit. I made a mental note to return in mid-April someday to witness its full glory.

Travel is not about the destination, but the memories created along the way.

One of the highlights was the audience hall where Emperor Taisho met his guests. It was fascinating to see how they incorporated Western elements while still maintaining the traditional Japanese aesthetic. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, sharing stories and insights about the villa's history. It was evident that they took great pride in preserving this important piece of Japanese heritage. The villa’s 106 rooms were like an eclectic museum, blending classical furniture with flowery carpeting. The villa stands as a testament to early 20th-century Japan and its embrace of Western civilizations, which greatly influenced the Japanese nobility's lifestyle and pastimes.

Spiritual Reflection at Chūzen-ji Temple

Next on our itinerary was the Chūzen-ji Temple, nestled on the shores of Lake Chuzenji. This temple, founded in 784 by the Buddhist monk Shodo Shonin, is known for its Tachiki Kannon, a statue of the thousand-armed Kannon goddess carved into a standing tree. The temple exuded a sense of tranquility and peace, offering a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. I lit a stick of incense and offered a prayer for the well-being of my family, feeling a deep connection to the spiritual energy of this sacred place. The main hall houses the Tachiki Kannon, believed to grant various wishes, and the Mido hall, dedicated to Hashiridaikokuten, is visited by those seeking safe childbirth and the return of runaway family members. The temple's history and serene atmosphere made it a truly special experience.

As we walked around the temple grounds, we admired the stunning views of Lake Chuzenji and the surrounding mountains. The crisp, clean air and the gentle lapping of the water against the shore created a soothing ambiance. Anika enjoyed feeding the koi fish in the temple pond, giggling as they swarmed around her, eager for a treat. It was a simple yet joyful moment that I knew we would cherish for years to come. I found myself reflecting on our journey so far. From the bustling streets of Tokyo to the serene landscapes of Nikko, we had experienced so much in such a short time. I felt grateful for the opportunity to share these moments with my family and to create memories that would last a lifetime. The temple was originally founded in 784 by a Buddhist monk known as Shodo-shonin and is located on the shore of Lake Chuzenji, which is approximately 1,300 meters above sea level. In the middle of the Meiji and early Showa periods, many European embassies built vacation houses around the lake, lending a unique atmosphere to the environs.

A Culinary Delight at Yubatei Masudaya

For lunch, we indulged in a yuba feast at Yubatei Masudaya. Yuba, or tofu skin, is a Nikko specialty, and this restaurant is renowned for its exquisite yuba dishes. We sampled a variety of yuba preparations, from delicate yuba sashimi to savory yuba hotpots. Each dish was a culinary masterpiece, showcasing the versatility and subtle flavors of this unique ingredient. Vikram, who is usually skeptical of tofu-based dishes, was pleasantly surprised by the richness and complexity of the yuba creations. Anika, of course, loved the yuba ice cream, declaring it the perfect ending to our meal. The restaurant itself was beautiful, offering a view of a traditional Japanese garden. The presentation of the food was exquisite, elevating the home-cooked staple to an artful level. The staff was incredibly friendly, making us feel welcome and ensuring we had a memorable dining experience.

Sake Tasting at Sake Café Lab 250

In the late afternoon, after our temple visit, we decided to try a local sake bar called Sake Café Lab 250. I thought it would be a perfect way to wind down and reflect on our trip. The café offered a wide selection of Tochigi Prefecture sake, and the staff were knowledgeable and passionate about their craft. I sampled a few different varieties, each with its own distinct flavor profile. From the smooth and delicate junmai daiginjo to the bold and robust kimoto, I was impressed by the diversity and complexity of Japanese sake. Vikram, who is not usually a sake drinker, found himself enjoying the experience as well. Anika, of course, was not allowed to partake in the sake tasting, but she was happy to sip on some refreshing green tea and nibble on some traditional Japanese snacks. The café had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, making it the perfect place to relax and unwind. We chatted with the staff and learned about the history and culture of sake brewing in the region. It was a truly enriching experience that added another layer to our understanding of Japanese culture. It’s amazing to think that just one train stop before Nikko, there’s Katayama Shuzo, a fantastic sake brewery. And Sake Cafe Lab 250 offers all-you-can-drink options, making it a must-visit for sake enthusiasts.

Dinner at Nantai: A Final Taste of Nikko

For our final dinner in Nikko, we chose Nantai, a restaurant known for its traditional Japanese cuisine and cozy atmosphere. We savored a delicious meal of grilled fish, fresh vegetables, and steaming bowls of rice. The food was simple yet flavorful, showcasing the natural ingredients of the region. As we ate, we reminisced about our favorite moments from the trip, from the breathtaking views of Kegon Falls to the serene beauty of Lake Chuzenji. We laughed, we shared stories, and we felt a deep sense of connection as a family. It was the perfect way to end our Nikko adventure. The restaurant is known for its baked fish caught from the lake, and the vegetables are incredibly fresh. The cozy ambiance makes it a great spot to enjoy a meal with family and friends.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post in our hotel room, I feel a mix of emotions. I’m sad to be leaving Nikko, but I’m also filled with gratitude for the incredible experiences we’ve had here. This trip has been more than just a vacation; it’s been a journey of discovery, connection, and growth. I’ve learned so much about Japanese culture, history, and spirituality, and I’ve created memories with my family that I will cherish forever. Tomorrow, we begin our journey back home to Brampton, but Nikko will always hold a special place in my heart.

I am so glad we decided to pack those lightweight rain jackets, as they came in handy during our temple visits. I am kicking myself for forgetting the sunscreen, though! I will definitely need to replenish my supply when we get back home. I'm already looking forward to planning our next adventure. Until then, sayonara from Nikko!

And with that, our Nikko adventure comes to a close. Tomorrow, we head back, cherishing the memories we've made. Stay tuned for the next chapter!
