Day 7: Divine Art and Leather Crafts: A Day of Florentine Discovery
Explore Florence's artistic heart at San Marco Museum, savor Tuscan flavors, and discover exquisite leather craftsmanship. A perfect day!
A Day of Monks, Markets, and Masterpieces
Today in Florence was a journey through the city's soul, blending the spiritual with the artisanal, and the historical with the contemporary. From the serene halls of San Marco Museum to the bustling leather markets and the inviting aromas of Florentine kitchens, it was a day that engaged all the senses. Anjali and Arjun joined me, and we dove headfirst into the vibrant tapestry of Florence, each of us finding something unique to cherish.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Il Vezzo. It was a cozy spot, not too far from our hotel. The reviews online seemed promising, and I was eager to try their take on classic Florentine breakfast fare. I opted for a simple yet satisfying pastry and a strong espresso. It's funny, even after all these years in Germany, I still crave that authentic Italian coffee kick to start my day! Anjali enjoyed a fruit plate, while Arjun, ever the adventurous one, went for a local pastry he couldn't pronounce but devoured with gusto. I am always happy to see him expand his horizons and taste new things.
With our appetites sated, we set off for the San Marco Museum. I'd heard so much about the frescoes by Fra Angelico, and I was keen to see them up close. The museum itself is housed in a 15th-century monastery, a peaceful haven away from the city's hustle and bustle. As we walked through the cloisters, I couldn't help but feel a sense of reverence. The simple yet elegant architecture spoke volumes about the lives of the monks who once lived here. Even Arjun, who usually prefers more modern attractions, seemed captivated by the tranquility of the place.

The frescoes, of course, were the highlight. Fra Angelico's use of color and light is simply breathtaking. Each cell in the dormitory is adorned with a different scene from the life of Christ, each one a masterpiece in its own right. I was particularly moved by the Annunciation, its delicate details and serene atmosphere creating a truly spiritual experience. Anjali, with her keen eye for art, pointed out the subtle nuances in the composition and the symbolism embedded in each brushstroke. It was moments like these that made traveling with family so special – sharing our passions and perspectives, enriching each other's understanding of the world.
We also visited the cell where Girolamo Savonarola, the fiery Dominican friar, once lived. It was a stark reminder of the turbulent times in which he preached against the corruption and decay of morals of the clergy. Standing in that small room, I couldn't help but reflect on the power of conviction and the courage it takes to stand up for one's beliefs. The museum is also preparing for the Angelico exhibition in collaboration with Palazzo Strozzi, starting in September, which I think will be a wonderful opportunity for art lovers to see even more of his work.
Leaving the museum, we found ourselves in Piazza San Marco, a bustling square filled with locals and tourists alike. The energy was palpable, a stark contrast to the serenity we had just experienced. It was time for lunch, and I had a particular spot in mind: Coquinarius. I had read about their creative pasta dishes and their emphasis on local, seasonal ingredients. It sounded like the perfect place to refuel and recharge.

We managed to snag a table outside, and I ordered their signature burrata ravioli with pistachio pesto. It was a revelation! The pasta was perfectly al dente, the burrata creamy and rich, and the pistachio pesto added a delightful nutty sweetness. Anjali opted for a salad with grilled vegetables and local cheese, while Arjun, true to form, chose a hearty meat dish. Everyone was happy, and the lively atmosphere of the piazza only added to our enjoyment. The quality of food was excellent, and I was glad I chose this restaurant.
The beauty of Florence lies not only in its grand monuments but also in the small, everyday moments – a shared meal, a chance encounter, a fleeting glimpse of history.
After lunch, it was time for some retail therapy. I was on the hunt for a special souvenir, something that would remind me of our time in Florence. And what better place to look than Scuola del Cuoio, the renowned leather school? I had heard about their exquisite craftsmanship and their dedication to preserving traditional techniques. It seemed like the perfect place to find a unique, high-quality piece.

The school is located in the cloisters of the Basilica di Santa Croce, a stunning setting that only adds to the experience. As we walked through the workshops, we watched artisans meticulously crafting leather bags, wallets, and belts. The air was filled with the rich aroma of leather, and the rhythmic sound of hammers and sewing machines created a symphony of skill and dedication. It was fascinating to see the process from start to finish, to witness the transformation of raw materials into works of art. I was thoroughly impressed by the Scuola del Cuoio S.r.l., and it was indeed a hidden gem.
I finally settled on a beautiful leather-bound journal, its pages just waiting to be filled with memories and reflections. Anjali chose a delicate leather purse, while Arjun, surprisingly, opted for a classic leather belt. It seemed that even he couldn't resist the allure of Florentine craftsmanship. I know that leather markets are popular in Florence, such as the San Lorenzo Market, but I was looking for something more authentic and unique.
As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Ristorante Oliviero 1962 for dinner. I had made a reservation in advance, as I wanted to ensure we had a special dining experience to cap off our day. And Oliviero did not disappoint. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with warm hospitality and impeccable service. The atmosphere was elegant and refined, yet also relaxed and welcoming. The reviews I read online were accurate; the restaurant truly offered an incredible meal.

I started with the *sbriciolona tagliata al coltello e burrata al tartufo*, a delightful combination of flavors and textures. For my main course, I chose the *filetto di manzo alla Rossini*, a classic dish that was cooked to perfection. Anjali opted for the *pici freschi con lardo di colonnata in salsa di pomodorini e polpo*, while Arjun, once again, went for a hearty meat dish. Each course was a culinary masterpiece, a testament to the chef's skill and passion. The service was impeccable, and the staff was knowledgeable and attentive. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.
As we walked back to the hotel, the city lights twinkling around us, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences we had shared. Florence had truly captured our hearts, its beauty, history, and culture weaving a spell that we would carry with us long after we left. I am also glad that the day went smoothly, especially since I forgot to pack my sunglasses and reusable water bottle.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Basilica di Santo Spirito and Piazza Santo Spirito, and perhaps enjoy a drink at Friends Pub in the evening. I am looking forward to discovering more of Florence's hidden gems and savoring its culinary delights. Until then, *Arrivederci*!
I have to say, Florence in January is something special. The crowds are thinner, the air is crisp and clean, and the city seems to reveal its secrets more willingly. It's a time for quiet contemplation, for savoring the simple pleasures, and for connecting with the soul of this remarkable place. And as I drift off to sleep, I can't help but wonder what tomorrow will bring. I am so happy to be able to share this experience with my family.
