Whispers of the Past, Splashes of the Present
Today was a day of contrasts, a journey that took us from the dawn of human expression to the refreshing embrace of nature's artistry. It’s amazing how much history and beauty can be packed into a single day, especially when you’re surrounded by good company and the stunning landscapes of Chapada Diamantina.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Sabor da Serra. Fuelled up with some local delicacies, we set off to explore the wonders that Chapada Diamantina had in store for us. The morning air was crisp, carrying the scent of damp earth and blooming flora, a perfect start to our Saturday adventure with my friends.
Our first stop was Cachoeira da Primavera. The walk to the waterfall was an experience in itself, a gentle trek through lush greenery with the promise of cool waters awaiting us. The trail was well-trodden, a mix of rocky paths and soft earth, easy enough for a leisurely stroll but still engaging enough to feel like a proper nature walk. As we approached, the sound of cascading water grew louder, heightening our anticipation. Finally, we arrived at Cachoeira da Primavera, a sight that truly lived up to its name.

The waterfall wasn't the tallest I’ve seen, but it had a charm all its own. The water cascaded down a series of rocky tiers, creating small, inviting pools perfect for a refreshing dip. The water itself had a unique tint, a dark reddish hue caused by the organic matter in the surrounding vegetation. It was surprisingly soothing, and the natural hydro-massage from the gentle falls was exactly what my muscles needed after days of hiking. We spent a good hour here, swimming, laughing, and simply enjoying the serene beauty of our surroundings. Even though I miss Klara and Naomi, experiences like these with friends are so valuable, creating memories that we'll cherish for years to come.
Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest of nature's offerings.
After our revitalizing swim, we dried off and prepared for the next part of our adventure: Serra das Paridas. This archaeological site promised a completely different experience, a step back in time to when early humans left their mark on these very rocks.

The drive to Serra das Paridas took us through more of Chapada Diamantina's stunning landscapes. As we approached the site, the scenery shifted from lush greenery to a more arid, rocky terrain. Serra das Paridas is known for its ancient rock paintings, a collection of art created by indigenous peoples thousands of years ago.
The site itself is a complex of rocky outcrops and caves, each surface telling a story through the drawings etched onto the stone. We explored the area with a local guide, who explained the significance of the various symbols and figures. There were depictions of animals, people, and geometric shapes, each rendered in mineral pigments that have stood the test of time. It was fascinating to see these ancient artworks and to imagine the lives of the people who created them.
One particular drawing caught my eye: a figure of a squatting woman, which our guide explained was a symbol of birth and fertility. It was a powerful image, connecting us to the universal experiences of humanity across millennia. As a chef, I often think about how food connects people, but art like this shows that the connections run even deeper.
After immersing ourselves in the art and history of Serra das Paridas, we made a quick stop at Sangue Bom Brechó & Artesanato - Presentes, suculentas e lembranças. I love supporting local artisans, and this shop was a treasure trove of handmade crafts and unique clothing. I picked up a few small souvenirs for Klara and Naomi, little reminders of our Brazilian adventure.

For lunch, we kept it simple with a packed meal amidst the stunning views of Chapada Diamantina National Park. There’s something special about eating outdoors, surrounded by nature's grandeur.
In the evening, we returned to Restaurante Sabor da Serra for another taste of local cuisine. The food was as delightful as the morning, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. We shared stories and laughter over our meal, reminiscing about the day's adventures.
As the day winds down, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we've had. From the soothing waters of Cachoeira da Primavera to the ancient art of Serra das Paridas, today was a journey through time and nature. It’s days like these that remind me why I love to travel, to explore, and to connect with the world around me.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're planning to visit Cachoeira do Samuel and Cachoeira da Fumacinha. I've heard great things about both waterfalls, and I'm excited to see what they have in store for us. And perhaps, after a day of chasing waterfalls, we'll unwind at Budha Bar in Vale do Capão. Until then, I'll rest easy, dreaming of more adventures to come.
Good night from Chapada Diamantina!
