Vale do Capão's Embrace: Waterfalls and Evening Delights
Today marked another incredible chapter in our Chapada Diamantina National Park adventure. With the sun shining bright, we set out to explore two of the region's most talked-about waterfalls. The day promised a blend of challenging treks and refreshing swims, and it certainly delivered. I was especially excited to see how these natural wonders compared to some of the hidden gems back home in Jamaica.
Our morning started with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Sabor da Serra. Fuelled up with some traditional Brazilian fare, we were ready to tackle the trails. The plan was to visit Cachoeira do Samuel and Cachoeira da Fumacinha, each offering its unique charm and challenges. First up was Cachoeira do Samuel. The journey to get there was quite the adventure in itself. We hopped into a 4x4, courtesy of a local guide, and bumped along the old mining road connecting Andaraí and Lençóis. The road was rough, a testament to the area's diamond-mining past. After crossing the Garapa River and navigating through sandy patches, we arrived at Casarão do Roncador. Apparently, this place was once a settlement for enslaved people who worked in the mines. It's humbling to think about the history beneath our feet as we embark on this trek. The hike to Cachoeira do Samuel was a three-hour trek through dense forest. There were constant river crossings and some light climbing involved. The landscape was diverse, ranging from open rocky fields to lush riverside vegetation. I spotted several colorful birds and hummingbirds, a real treat for any nature lover. The anticipation grew with each step, and the sound of rushing water became more and more prominent. Finally, we arrived at Cachoeira do Samuel, and it was a sight to behold. The waterfall cascaded down from about 100 meters, plunging into a clear pool below. The water was cool and inviting, perfect for a refreshing swim after the strenuous hike. I couldn't resist diving in, the cool water washing away the sweat and fatigue. The power of the falls was invigorating, a true testament to nature's raw beauty.

After spending a good hour swimming and relaxing by the falls, we started our trek back. On our return, we stopped at the Caldeirões do Roncador for another quick dip. These natural pools were a welcome treat, and the cool water was just what we needed to rejuvenate our tired muscles. >Sometimes, the most scenic roads in life are the detours you didn't mean to take.
Back at the Casarão do Roncador, we enjoyed a delicious lunch cooked on a wood-fired stove. The food was simple but hearty, and it tasted all the better after a day of hiking and swimming. We shared stories and laughter with our guide, soaking in the warmth and hospitality of the locals. Next on the agenda was Cachoeira da Fumacinha. This waterfall is located in the municipality of Ibicoara, at the southern end of Chapada Diamantina National Park. Known for being one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the region, reaching it requires a challenging 18km round trip. The trail to Cachoeira da Fumacinha started early in the morning, around 6:40 AM. The path led us through riverbeds and over slippery rocks inside a canyon. Some say the hike can be quite demanding, and the time spent at the waterfall itself is relatively short. But everyone agrees that the effort is well worth it. As we trekked, the views were nothing short of spectacular. Towering canyon walls surrounded us, and the sound of the river echoed through the gorge. The hike involved navigating through numerous rocky sections and wading through water. It was physically challenging, but the stunning scenery kept us motivated. Finally, we reached Cachoeira da Fumacinha, and it was truly breathtaking. The waterfall plunges about 120 meters, creating a misty cloud as it hits the rocks below. The canyon walls added to the dramatic effect, making it feel like we were in a hidden world. I took some time to simply sit and absorb the beauty of the place, feeling grateful for the opportunity to witness such a natural wonder. The swim in the falls was invigorating and chilling. The water was crisp, but the views were worth it. We spent some time swimming and floating, taking in the beauty of the canyon's waters. It was the perfect way to relax and rejuvenate after the long hike.

As the sun began to set, we started our journey back. The hike back was just as challenging, but the memories of the stunning waterfall kept us going. We arrived back at our starting point tired but exhilarated, with a sense of accomplishment and awe. After freshening up, we headed to Budha Bar in Vale do Capão for dinner. I was intrigued by this place, having heard that it offers a fusion of local and international cuisine. Plus, I was eager to try some traditional Brazilian dishes with a twist. Budha Bar turned out to be a charming spot with a relaxed and vibrant atmosphere. The décor was a mix of rustic and modern, creating a cozy yet stylish ambiance. The menu was diverse, offering everything from traditional Bahian fare to innovative culinary creations. I opted for the carne do sol with grilled fries, while some of my friends tried the crab cone with yellow farofa. We also ordered a complete individual feijoada to share, which was more than enough for two people. The food was delicious, and the service was top-notch. Of course, no visit to Budha Bar would be complete without trying some of their cocktails. The bar is known for its refreshing and creative drinks. I ordered a caipirinha, Brazil's national cocktail, and it was the perfect way to end the day. The evening at Budha Bar was a delightful experience. We enjoyed good food, great drinks, and even better company. The atmosphere was lively, and we found ourselves chatting with other travelers and locals, sharing stories and laughter. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of hiking and swimming.

As the night drew to a close, we made our way back to our campsite, the stars twinkling above us. I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences of the day. From the challenging hikes to the stunning waterfalls and the delicious food, Chapada Diamantina had once again exceeded my expectations. Tomorrow is our last day in Chapada Diamantina, and we plan to make the most of it. We'll be visiting Riachinho and Cachoeira Ferro Doido. I'm excited to see what these natural wonders have in store for us. We also plan to stop by MUNDO NATURAL for some last-minute souvenirs before heading back to Berlin. Chapada Diamantina has truly captured my heart with its natural beauty and warm hospitality. I can't wait to share more stories and memories from this incredible adventure.
