A Day of Siena's Soul

Today was a day of wandering through the heart of Siena, a city that continues to surprise and enchant me at every turn. Elena and I set out to explore some of its most treasured spots, from serene gardens to awe-inspiring architectural marvels, and, of course, to savor the local flavors. It was a day filled with beauty, history, and the simple joy of discovery.

Our morning began with a leisurely breakfast at Osteria Cice. I decided to try their T-bone steak, while Elena opted for the homemade pasta. It's always a treat to start the day with a delicious meal, setting the perfect tone for our explorations. I am always reminded of home when I taste flavors like this, and it makes me proud of my own culinary skills.

First on our itinerary was the Orto Botanico dell'Università di Siena. As someone who appreciates the quiet beauty of nature, I was eager to see this botanical garden. It's funny, I remember when Miguel was younger, he had a small garden where he planted sunflowers. It reminds me of simpler times. The garden, nestled within the ancient walls of Siena, was a peaceful oasis. We strolled along winding paths, admiring the diverse collection of plants from around the world. The air was filled with the scent of flowers, and the tranquil atmosphere was a welcome escape from the bustling city streets. Elena, with her nursing background, was particularly interested in the medicinal plants, pointing out various species and their uses. I enjoyed capturing the vibrant colors and unique textures with my camera, adding to my growing collection of travel photos.

Leaving the serene garden, we made our way to the Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta, Siena's magnificent cathedral. As we approached, the intricate white, green, and red marble facade took my breath away. The Duomo is a testament to the artistic genius of the many architects and artists who contributed to its creation over centuries. Inside, the soaring ceilings, intricate sculptures, and stunning frescoes created an atmosphere of reverence and awe. We spent a long time admiring Nicola Pisano's elaborate pulpit and Pinturicchio's vibrant frescoes in the Libreria Piccolomini. The inlaid marble floor, with its depictions of biblical and mythological scenes, was particularly impressive. Elena and I lit a candle for our family, sending our love and prayers across the ocean to Stratford.

Siena is a city where every corner tells a story, and every moment is a chance to discover something new.

Next, we ventured into the heart of Siena, Piazza del Campo. I had read that the Palio di Siena takes place twice a year, and will occur on August 16, 2025. While there wasn't a Palio event today, the piazza was still alive with activity. Tourists and locals alike gathered to soak in the atmosphere, children chased pigeons, and vendors sold souvenirs. We found a spot on the edge of the piazza and simply watched the world go by, enjoying the lively ambiance and the stunning architecture that surrounded us. I tried to imagine what it must be like during the Palio, with the excitement and passion of the horse race filling the square. It's something I would love to witness one day.

For lunch, we chose Ristorante La Locanda dei Tintori Siena, drawn in by its cozy atmosphere and traditional Tuscan cuisine. We shared a plate of pici, a local pasta specialty, and a hearty ribollita soup. The flavors were rich and comforting, a perfect representation of Tuscan home cooking. Elena particularly enjoyed the tiramisu, declaring it the best she had ever tasted. The service was warm and welcoming, making us feel like part of the family.

In the afternoon, we indulged in a bit of retail therapy at Dolci Trame. The shop had artisan chocolates, pastries, and a taste of local tradition. Elena bought a beautiful silk scarf, while I found a unique leather-bound journal that I plan to use for my travel writing. It's important to support local businesses and artisans, and we were happy to find such a charming shop with high-quality goods.

As evening approached, we made our way to Osteria Le Logge for dinner. This restaurant, known for its elegant setting and refined Tuscan dishes, was the perfect way to end our day. We started with a selection of local cheeses and cured meats, followed by a perfectly cooked steak for me and a delicate seafood pasta for Elena. The wine list was extensive, and we chose a robust Chianti Classico to complement our meal. The atmosphere was sophisticated yet relaxed, and the service was impeccable. It was a memorable dining experience that perfectly captured the essence of Sienese cuisine.

As we walked back to Hotel Minerva, hand in hand, we reflected on the day's adventures. Siena had once again exceeded our expectations, offering a perfect blend of history, culture, and culinary delights. I am so glad I get to experience this with Elena, as these are the memories that we will cherish forever. Tomorrow, we plan to visit Abbazia di Sant'Antimo, Chiesa di San Niccolò Oltrarno, and Palazzo Comunale, Pinacoteca, Torre Grossa, and I am already excited to see what new wonders await us. Siena continues to captivate and inspire, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

It's interesting how travel changes you. Before I came to Italy, I only knew how to cook Filipino dishes, but now I am eager to try new things. I find myself thinking of different recipes and flavors that I can try when I return to Stratford. I even Facetimed Miguel to ask him to bring my ukulele, so that I can learn how to play while on vacation. These are the memories that I will cherish forever.

For breakfast tomorrow, we're planning on heading to Zest Ristorante & Wine Bar, followed by Osteria Il Ghibellino for lunch, and Trattoria la Torre for dinner. I am excited to see what these restaurants have to offer. I am also excited to visit Non Solo Bar siena for a drink. I am sure it will be a great way to end the day.

Siena is a city that has stolen my heart, and I look forward to continuing our exploration of its hidden corners and iconic landmarks. Each day brings new discoveries, new flavors, and new memories, making this trip with Elena an unforgettable experience.
