A Day of Exploration and Discovery

Today was another wonderful day of exploration here in Siena, a city that continues to surprise and delight Elena and me at every turn. It's amazing how much history and culture is packed into this beautiful place, and I'm eager to share our experiences. While the main attractions are certainly worth seeing, today we ventured off the beaten path to discover some of Siena's hidden gems.

Our day began, as most do, with a hearty breakfast at Ristorante Campo Cedro. Elena and I enjoyed some traditional Italian breakfast options, fueling up for a day of exploring. With a blend of Italian and Japanese culinary influences, it was the perfect way to start the day. I must admit, I was still thinking about the delicious pastries as we set off toward our first destination: the Museo dell’Accademia dei Fisiocritici. I made sure to bring my camera, ready to capture the memories as we explored. I even remembered to pack sunscreen this time, learning from my past mistakes!

Delving into Natural History at the Museo dell’Accademia dei Fisiocritici

The Museo dell’Accademia dei Fisiocritici was unlike anything I expected. Founded in 1691, this natural history museum is one of Siena’s best-kept secrets. As we walked through its doors, we were immediately transported to another world. The museum is filled with an extensive collection of zoological specimens, fossils, and anatomical models. It felt like stepping back in time, with exhibits that showcased the wonders of the natural world in a way that was both educational and awe-inspiring.

Elena was particularly fascinated by the collection of taxidermied animals, while I was drawn to the displays of fossils and minerals. We spent a good couple of hours wandering through the various rooms, each filled with unique and fascinating artifacts. The museum is run on donations, which I found incredibly admirable. It's clear that the people who run it are passionate about preserving and sharing their knowledge with the public. It was a truly magical place, one that sparked curiosity and wonder in both of us.

The true voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.

A Moment of Reflection at the Basilica di San Francesco

After immersing ourselves in the natural world, we sought a bit of spiritual nourishment at the Basilica di San Francesco. This basilica has a rich history, dating back to the 13th century. Over the centuries, it has undergone numerous renovations, resulting in a unique blend of architectural styles. The Basilica was originally built between 1228 and 1255, and later enlarged between 1326 and 1475, transforming the original Romanesque building into the Gothic structure you see today. As we approached, the neo-Gothic facade, completed in the early 20th century, was quite striking.

Inside, the basilica exuded a sense of peace and tranquility. The interior is simple yet elegant, with high ceilings and beautiful stained-glass windows. We took our time to admire the various works of art, including frescoes by famous Sienese artists. I found myself particularly drawn to the atmosphere of reverence and contemplation. We lit a couple of candles and said a prayer for our family back in Stratford. It was a moment of quiet reflection amidst the hustle and bustle of our travels. The Basilica's crypt is now used as the Library of the Faculty of Economics of the University of Siena. The Basilica of San Francesco is an important church in Siena, easily reached by walking down Via dei Rossi, not far from Piazza Tolomei.

Stepping Back in Time at Castellare degli Ugurgieri

Our next stop was the Castellare degli Ugurgieri, a medieval fortified complex that offers a glimpse into Siena’s past. This unique structure dates back to the 13th century and was once the stronghold of the Ugurgieri family. As we approached, the towering buildings arranged in a circle around a central courtyard immediately transported us back in time. The Castellare is located between Via San Vigilio and Via Angiolieri, a strategic point along the Via Francigena.

Today, the Castellare degli Ugurgieri houses the Contrada della Civetta (the Owl), one of Siena’s historic neighborhoods that participate in the Palio. We learned that the buildings also house a museum with a collection of valuable medieval Renaissance majolica pieces. Although we couldn't go inside, just walking around the exterior and imagining what life must have been like centuries ago was a fascinating experience. These fortress-houses were built by urbanized families in Siena around the 11th and 12th centuries, mirroring the castles where they lived in the countryside.

A Culinary Interlude at Fischi per Fiaschi

By this point, our stomachs were starting to rumble, so we decided to find a local spot for lunch. Based on a recommendation, we ventured to Fischi per Fiaschi, a charming trattoria known for its authentic Sienese cuisine. This place is a hidden gem, offering delicious, homemade dishes in a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. The restaurant is located on Via S. Marco, offering traditional Tuscan cuisine with homemade dishes.

Elena and I shared a couple of pasta dishes, each bursting with flavor and made with fresh, local ingredients. I opted for the pici pasta, a thick, hand-rolled pasta that is typical of Siena, while Elena chose the ravioli. We savored every bite, enjoying the simple yet delicious flavors of Tuscan cooking. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the staff made us feel right at home. It was the perfect place to relax and recharge before continuing our exploration.

Evening Indulgence at BLANDIS - Wine & Café and Dinner at Alla Speranza

As the afternoon waned, we decided to treat ourselves to a glass of wine at BLANDIS - Wine & Café. This cozy spot, located near Piazza del Campo, is known for its excellent coffee and friendly staff. We sat outside, enjoying the warm summer breeze and sipping on some local Chianti. It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. The staff was very friendly, making us feel right at home. I even tried their cappuccino with a chocolate illustration, a special touch that added to the experience. I was impressed with their gluten-free options; it's nice to see places catering to different dietary needs.

For dinner, we chose Alla Speranza, a restaurant that came highly recommended. This pizzeria is known for its enjoyable service and pleasant atmosphere. I must say, the prices were quite reasonable, and the staff was very accommodating. We started with some appetizers, followed by a couple of pizzas. The food was delicious, and the portions were generous. The restaurant also had a great view overlooking the plaza, which added to the overall dining experience. While the Google ratings are a bit below average, we found it to be a delightful place to end our day.

Reflections on a Day Well Spent

Today was a reminder that the best travel experiences often come from venturing off the beaten path. From the fascinating exhibits at the Museo dell’Accademia dei Fisiocritici to the spiritual ambiance of the Basilica di San Francesco and the medieval charm of Castellare degli Ugurgieri, each location offered a unique perspective on this beautiful city.

As we walked back to Hotel Minerva, hand in hand, Elena and I shared our favorite moments from the day. We both agreed that it was a day filled with discovery, inspiration, and connection.
