Exploring the Historic Charm of Siena with My Spouse
Day 11: A Spiritual and Sensory Journey Through Siena's Gems
Discover Siena's spiritual side with visits to stunning basilicas and a unique wine museum. A day of history, art, and Tuscan flavors.
Echoes of Faith and Flavors in Siena
Today was a day of reflection and discovery, a harmonious blend of spiritual exploration and sensory indulgence. Elena and I ventured beyond the bustling city center of Siena, seeking solace in its sacred spaces and savoring the region's rich culinary heritage. It was a day that nourished both the soul and the palate, leaving us with a deeper appreciation for the beauty and history of this enchanting city.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Osteria Babazuf Siena. The aroma of freshly baked bread and brewing coffee filled the air as we settled into a cozy corner. I savored a traditional Tuscan breakfast, complete with local cheeses, cured meats, and crusty bread. Elena opted for a lighter fare of fresh fruit and yogurt. The Osteria Babazuf, close to Piazza del Campo, offers traditional Tuscan cuisine with a medieval touch. It’s not a classic tourist trap but a place where you can discover authentic and surprising flavors of the 15th century. It’s a favorite for many, and I can certainly see why. The flower pie is something I will definitely remember. This was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration.
With our stomachs full and spirits high, we set off to our first destination: the Basilica di San Miniato. Though technically just outside Siena, the short journey was well worth it. As we approached the basilica, its imposing facade stood proudly against the backdrop of the rolling Tuscan hills. The Basilica di San Miniato al Monte is a milestone of Romanesque architecture. I was immediately struck by the tranquility and sense of reverence that permeated the air. Stepping inside, we were enveloped in a world of stunning mosaics, intricate carvings, and soaring arches. The Basilica is very old and important to the Florentine story. Every corner seemed to whisper stories of centuries past. I found myself captivated by the intricate details of the artwork, each piece a testament to the skill and dedication of the artisans who created it. Elena, ever the art enthusiast, pointed out the subtle nuances in the frescoes, explaining the historical and religious significance of each scene. We lit a candle and said a prayer for our son, Miguel, hoping he continues to pursue his dreams with the same passion and dedication we witnessed in the creation of this sacred space.

The beauty of Siena lies not only in its grand landmarks but also in the quiet corners where history and spirituality intertwine.
Next on our itinerary was the Tempio del Brunello - Interactive Museum. Now, I know what you might be thinking: a museum dedicated to wine? But trust me, this was no ordinary museum. Located in Montalcino, the Tempio del Brunello is an immersive experience that celebrates the rich history and tradition of Brunello wine-making. As a data analyst, I appreciated the interactive exhibits that showcased the science and art behind the perfect glass of Brunello. Elena, with her nursing background, was fascinated by the displays on the health benefits of red wine (in moderation, of course!). We learned about the different grape varietals, the fermentation process, and the aging techniques that contribute to the unique flavor profile of Brunello. The museum is innovative and immersive. It unites history, archeology, art, culture and landscape. We even had the opportunity to sample a few different vintages, each one a testament to the passion and dedication of the local wine-makers. I even got to create my own digital work of art inspired by the colors of Montalcino, a fun way to express my sensations.

After our enriching museum visit, we journeyed to the Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Biagio. Perched atop a hill overlooking the town of Montepulciano, this Renaissance masterpiece exuded an aura of serenity and grace. We walked up the grand staircase, admiring the intricate carvings and the stunning marble facade. Inside, the sanctuary was bathed in soft, natural light, illuminating the beautiful frescoes and sculptures that adorned the walls. The statue of the Madonna di San Biagio was particularly striking, radiating a sense of peace and compassion. Elena and I took a moment to sit in quiet contemplation, reflecting on the blessings in our lives and offering gratitude for the love and support we share. The Sanctuary is a sacred place that holds a special meaning for all who visit. It is a place of peace, hope, and faith. The intricate details of the architecture, the beautiful artwork, and the peaceful atmosphere all come together to create a truly special place. Legend has it that construction began following a miracle, after two women saw the eyes of the Virgin, painted on a fresco, move. It is easy to spot the Temple of San Biagio, as its marble facades appear to be glowing among the surrounding forestry, changing hues throughout the day.

As the afternoon drew to a close, we made a stop at Il giardino di Rubegni Beatrice, a charming shop in Siena. I was looking for a gift for my daughter-in-law, Miguel's wife. The shop was filled with unique, handcrafted items, from ceramics to jewelry to textiles. I finally settled on a beautiful hand-painted vase, knowing she would appreciate the artistry and craftsmanship. This gift shop is a must-visit in Siena for unique souvenirs and local craftsmanship.

With our shopping done, it was time for a late lunch at Ristorante La Finestra. We were ready to enjoy the fruits of our labor. Nestled in the heart of Siena, this cozy restaurant offered a warm and inviting atmosphere. We started with the *crostini misti Senesi*, toasted bread spread with chicken leaver, truffles & mushrooms, pepper cream, and caramellized onion. For our main courses, I ordered the *pici all’aglione*, a traditional Tuscan pasta dish with a rich tomato and garlic sauce. Elena opted for the *cinghiale in umido*, wild boar stewed in red wine and herbs. The food was simple yet delicious, showcasing the fresh, local ingredients that Tuscany is known for. The restaurant has a lovely decor and nice ambiance that let visitors feel relaxed.

Our final culinary stop of the day was dinner at La Vecchia Taverna di Bacco. This rustic tavern exuded old-world charm, with its exposed brick walls, wooden beams, and flickering candlelight. The well-trained staff works hard and makes this place great. I ordered the *ribollita*, a hearty bread and vegetable soup that was perfect for a chilly evening. Elena chose the *bistecca alla fiorentina*, a thick-cut steak grilled to perfection. We savored each bite, accompanied by a bottle of robust Chianti Classico. As we lingered over our meal, we reflected on the day's adventures, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and culture of Siena together.
