Echoes of Edo: A Day Immersed in Kanazawa's History

Today was a journey into the heart of Kanazawa's past. Elena and Miguel joined me as we explored districts that have stood the test of time, offering glimpses into the lives of samurai, merchants, and geishas. It's amazing how much history is packed into this one city, and I'm so glad to be sharing it with my family.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Fuwari. While I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set featuring grilled fish and miso soup, Miguel, ever the adventurous eater, tried the *aji no tataki* (finely chopped horse mackerel sashimi). Elena enjoyed a comforting *tamago yaki*, a thick Japanese omelet. Fuelled up, we were ready to delve into the historical heart of Kanazawa.

First on our itinerary was the Nagamachi District. As we stepped onto the cobblestone streets, it felt like we were transported back to the Edo period. The earthen walls, topped with tiles, lined the narrow lanes, creating a serene and almost secretive atmosphere. It’s incredible to think that samurai once walked these very paths. I imagined them in their full regalia, perhaps on their way to or from Kanazawa Castle. Elena was particularly fascinated by the architecture, noting the intricate details of the preserved houses. Miguel, always the observant one, pointed out the small canals running alongside the streets, remnants of a sophisticated water management system from centuries ago.

To walk through Nagamachi is to walk through a living museum, where the past is not just remembered but felt.

We visited the Nomura Samurai House, a highlight of the district. The meticulously maintained garden, with its tranquil streams and miniature waterfall, offered a peaceful respite. Inside, we saw displays of samurai armor and artifacts, providing a tangible connection to the lives of these warriors. I couldn't help but wonder about the stories behind each item, the battles fought, and the lives lived. It made me think about my own family history and the importance of preserving our heritage.

Next, we ventured to the Kanazawa Shinise Memorial Hall, a beautifully preserved merchant house that once belonged to a family-run pharmacy. It was fascinating to see how the merchant class lived and worked during the Edo period. The hall showcased traditional tools, living quarters, and even a tea room. Elena, with her nursing background, was particularly interested in the displays related to traditional medicine. Miguel, on the other hand, was intrigued by the confectionery tree on the second floor, made entirely of sugar! It was a testament to the artistry and craftsmanship of the local artisans. The *shinise* (old shop) provided a glimpse into the economic and cultural life of Kanazawa beyond the samurai class.

For lunch, we decided to try The Godburger, a local spot known for its gourmet hamburgers. It might seem odd to eat American food in Japan, but we were curious to see how they would put their own spin on it. And we weren't disappointed! Miguel devoured a classic cheeseburger, while Elena and I opted for the avocado burger, which was topped with a perfectly cooked egg. The burgers were juicy, flavorful, and the buns were incredibly soft. It was a delicious and satisfying meal, and a fun change of pace from the traditional Japanese cuisine we had been eating.

In the afternoon, we strolled through the Kazuemachi Chaya District, one of Kanazawa's three preserved geisha districts. Located along the Asano River, Kazuemachi offered a more intimate and less crowded atmosphere than the more famous Higashi Chaya District. The traditional wooden buildings, with their latticework facades, lined the narrow streets, creating a sense of timeless elegance. I could almost hear the echoes of *shamisen* music and the laughter of geishas from centuries past. We walked along Akari-zaka (Bright Alley) and Kuragari-zaka (Dark Alley), soaking in the atmosphere and imagining what life must have been like in this entertainment district.

As evening approached, we decided to try Oriental Brewing for a pre-dinner drink. This craft brewery has several locations around Kanazawa, and we opted for the one near Kanazawa Station. We sampled a few of their unique local beers, each with its own distinct flavor profile. Miguel, who is turning into quite the beer aficionado, appreciated the variety and craftsmanship. It was a great way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures.

For dinner, we had reservations at Kagaya Kanazawa, a renowned restaurant that specializes in Kaga cuisine, the traditional cuisine of the Kanazawa region. Located in the Kanazawa Hyakubangai Anto shopping mall, the restaurant offered a sophisticated dining experience with a focus on seasonal ingredients and local flavors. We started with *jibuni*, a local specialty of duck simmered with vegetables, followed by a selection of fresh sashimi and tempura. Each dish was beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. Elena and I particularly enjoyed the *Kagaya gozen*, a set meal that included a variety of small dishes, showcasing the diversity of Kaga cuisine. Miguel, who has a penchant for meat, opted for the *hirekatsu zen*, a set meal featuring fillet cutlet. The service was impeccable, and the staff was knowledgeable about the dishes and their origins. It was a truly memorable dining experience.

Tomorrow, we're venturing further afield to Shirakawa-go and the World Heritage Suganuma Gassho-zukuri Village. I've heard so much about these traditional villages with their unique gassho-style farmhouses, and I can't wait to see them with my own eyes. Breakfast will be at Curio Espresso and Vintage Design Café, followed by lunch at Teppanyaki makibi san-an and dinner at Teppanyaki Icho. It promises to be another day filled with unforgettable experiences.

Until then, *oyasumi nasai* (good night) from Kanazawa!

It's been a day of historical immersion and culinary delights, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
