A Day of Verdant Escapes
Today was a breath of fresh air, quite literally! After days immersed in the historical wonders of Meknes, Jan and I decided to dedicate today to exploring the natural beauty surrounding this imperial city. We ventured into two distinct parks, each offering its own unique charm and a welcome escape from the bustling medina. It was a day of serene landscapes, unexpected encounters, and a deeper appreciation for the natural wonders that Morocco has to offer.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Riad Lahboul. The traditional Moroccan pastries and strong coffee set us up perfectly for a day of exploration. Riad Lahboul is a traditional Moroccan guest house, beautifully restored in the elegant Andalusia style of hand made mosaics. Ideally situated on the edge of the Medina or old town, we are right in the heart of Meknes. I always find that starting the day with local flavors helps to immerse oneself in the culture and prepare for the adventures ahead.
First on our itinerary was Bab Rmila Natural Park. It's a bit of a drive from Meknes, but the journey itself was worthwhile, offering glimpses of rural Moroccan life. The park is situated close to the village of Maghasiyen, approximately 8 km from the town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun. As we approached, the landscape transformed, trading the urban sprawl for rolling hills and lush greenery. The air felt cleaner, crisper, and carried the scent of pine and wild herbs. Jan, with his history teacher's curiosity, was keen to learn about the park's significance. Bab Rmila Natural Park has a storied past that reflects Morocco's commitment to conserving its natural heritage. Established as a nature reserve, the park aims to protect various flora and fauna endemic to the region. Over the years, it has played a crucial role in promoting biodiversity and environmental sustainability.

We spent a good few hours wandering through the park's trails. The trails wind through lush landscapes, offering breathtaking views and opportunities for wildlife spotting. The trails were relatively easy, making it a comfortable walk for both of us. Though I must admit, my Masurian hiking boots, usually perfect for Polish trails, felt a tad too heavy for the Moroccan heat. We were hoping to spot some wildlife, but the animals seemed to be taking a siesta, much like the rest of the country. We did, however, encounter a group of local families enjoying picnics under the shade of the trees. It was heartwarming to see them connect with nature, sharing laughter and stories. Seeing those families reminded me of summers spent in Westport, picnicking by the sea with my own family.
In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.
After Bab Rmila, we drove towards Ifrane National Park. The change in scenery was remarkable. From the arid landscapes around Meknes, we ascended into the Middle Atlas Mountains, where Ifrane is located. The air grew cooler, and the vegetation transformed into dense cedar forests. Ifrane National Park is situated in the heart of the Atlas Mountains, offering breathtaking vistas of snow-capped peaks, rugged terrain, and verdant valleys. The park's diverse landscapes provide endless opportunities for outdoor adventures and photography. It felt like stepping into a different world, a world reminiscent of the forests back home in Ireland, albeit with a distinctly Moroccan twist.

Ifrane National Park is renowned for its extensive cedar forests, characterized by towering Atlas cedar trees. These ancient forests provide habitat for diverse wildlife and offer visitors a serene environment for exploration and relaxation. We decided to take a short hike, following one of the many trails that crisscross the park. The scent of cedar filled the air, and the sunlight filtered through the canopy, creating a magical atmosphere. We were hoping to catch a glimpse of the Barbary macaques, the park's most famous residents, but they remained elusive. Jan, ever the optimist, pointed out various species of trees, sharing anecdotes about their historical and cultural significance. He even attempted to identify some of the local bird species, though his Polish ornithology knowledge didn't quite translate to the Moroccan avian world.
As the day drew to a close, we made our way back to Meknes, feeling refreshed and rejuvenated by our immersion in nature. Before heading back to our riad, we stopped at Boutique Meknes to pick up a few souvenirs. I found a beautiful hand-painted ceramic bowl that will remind me of the vibrant colors of Morocco. Jan, on the other hand, opted for a traditional djellaba, much to my amusement. I can already picture him wearing it during our evening strolls in Warsaw, turning heads and sparking conversations.

For dinner, we chose Pavillon Des Idrissides, a restaurant known for its French cuisine. It was a delightful change from the traditional Moroccan fare we had been enjoying. I opted for a classic steak frites, while Jan chose a hearty pot-au-feu. The restaurant had a lovely ambiance, and the service was impeccable. It was the perfect way to end a day of natural exploration, indulging in a bit of culinary comfort.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how important it is to balance cultural immersion with moments of natural escape. Meknes, with its rich history and vibrant city life, can be overwhelming at times. The natural parks surrounding the city offer a much-needed respite, a chance to reconnect with nature and recharge before diving back into the urban adventure. And as we prepare for tomorrow's adventure to Moulay Idriss Zerhoun and Place Lahdim, I feel refreshed and ready to continue our exploration of Morocco's hidden gems. I am particularly excited to see Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, the first Muslim city in Morocco. I've heard it's a place of great spiritual significance and stunning beauty. Jan is eager to visit Place Lahdim, a bustling square known for its vibrant atmosphere and local vendors. It promises to be another day filled with cultural discoveries and unforgettable experiences.
Before drifting off to sleep, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience Morocco's diverse landscapes. From the bustling medinas to the tranquil natural parks, this country has something to offer every traveler. And as I closed my eyes, I dreamt of cedar forests, Barbary macaques, and the sweet scent of wild herbs, already anticipating the adventures that tomorrow would bring.
We ate lunch at Restaurant goût de meknes. The Moroccan cuisine is well prepared. The secret of the success of this place is a tasty tajine. You will really enjoy a fascinating perfect. In accordance with the opinions of the visitors, the waiters offer a good cordial here. You will be offered an immense mint tea.
