A Day of Discoveries in Meknes
Today was a day of immersion into the historical and cultural heart of Meknes. Jan and I set out to explore the city's ancient sites and vibrant culinary scene, eager to uncover the stories woven into its walls and tastes. It was a day filled with unexpected discoveries and a deeper appreciation for this Moroccan gem.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Omnia. Nestled in a traditional Moroccan riad, Omnia offered an authentic taste of local cuisine. Surrounded by the riad's comfortable seats and unique atmosphere, which reflected the cultural authenticity of Morocco, I felt as if I were sitting inside a Moroccan home. The family-run restaurant served up a delightful spread of Moroccan couscous, meat tagine with vegetables, and grilled kebabs, all washed down with the well-known Moroccan tea. It was the perfect start to a day of exploration.

Fuelled and ready, we made our way to Heri es-Souani, an ancient granary and stable complex built in the 18th century by Moulay Ismail. The sheer scale of the structure was astounding. The thick-walled, barrel-vaulted granaries, designed to keep the interior cool through a system of underfloor water channels, spoke volumes about the ingenuity of the past. Although Lonely Planet suggests that unless you're particularly interested in water engineering, there is not much to see, I found the site fascinating. Wandering through the remains of the stables, I imagined the 12,000 horses that were once housed here, a testament to Moulay Ismail's power and vision.

The echoes of history resonated within the walls of Heri es-Souani, reminding me of the enduring legacy of Moroccan craftsmanship and vision.
Next on our itinerary was Borj Belkari, a 17th-century bastion tower that now houses the Museum of Pottery. As we approached the tower, its imposing presence was a reminder of its role in the defensive walls of the Kasbah of Sultan Moulay Ismail. Inside, we were treated to a stunning collection of pottery from the Rif and pre-Rif regions. The museum is organized in an Alawite stronghold. The exhibits, arranged both chronologically and thematically, showcased the evolution of Rif pottery from prehistoric times to the present day. I was particularly intrigued by the reconstruction of a pottery workshop, which offered a glimpse into the traditional techniques and craftsmanship. The museum not only displayed the beauty of Moroccan pottery but also highlighted its cultural and historical significance.

For lunch, we chose La grillardière. While some reviews were mixed, we decided to give it a try, and I'm so glad we did. The restaurant offered a diverse menu of Moroccan, international, and Mediterranean cuisine. Jan opted for a grilled meat dish, while I enjoyed a flavorful tagine. The service was friendly, and the prices were reasonable, making it a delightful midday stop.

As the afternoon sun began to dip, we sought out Bar Imad for a relaxing drink. The bar had a pleasant atmosphere and offered a variety of beverages. We sipped on refreshing mint tea, soaking in the ambiance and reflecting on the day's adventures. The bar was known for its spectacular atmosphere. It was the perfect way to unwind before dinner.

Dinner was at Restaurant Denver, known for its diverse menu and welcoming ambiance. From burgers to sushi, the restaurant offered a wide range of options to satisfy any craving. Jan chose a burger, while I decided to try the seafood pizza. The portions were generous, and the ingredients were fresh, making it a satisfying end to our culinary journey. The wooden windows and American-themed decorations added to the unique interior design vibe, enhancing the dining experience.

As we walked back to our riad, the sounds of Meknes filled the air. I couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment. Today, September 14, 2025, was more than just a day of sightseeing; it was a day of connecting with the history, culture, and people of Meknes. We didn't encounter any local events today, but the city itself was alive with activity and charm.
Tomorrow, we plan to venture further afield, exploring the natural beauty of Bab Rmila Natural Park and Ifrane National Park. I'm excited to see what wonders await us beyond the city walls. I'm also hoping to find some time to do a little shopping at Boutique Meknes.
Until then, I'll cherish the memories of today and look forward to sharing more of our Moroccan adventure with you all.
Before concluding this entry, I must mention that I forgot to pack a power adapter for Moroccan outlets and lightweight, long-sleeved clothing for sun protection. I will need to purchase these items tomorrow before heading out to the parks.
