Florentine Echoes of the Renaissance

Today was a day steeped in the very essence of the Renaissance, a journey through the heart of Florence that resonated with art, history, and breathtaking panoramas. It felt as though every corner turned revealed another layer of the city's rich tapestry, woven with the threads of artistic genius and cultural significance. It was a day of discovery and reflection, a day where the past felt vividly present.

Our day began with breakfast at Golden View Firenze. The reviews I had read online praised the amazing views, great atmosphere, fantastic service and food. The restaurant more than lived up to its reputation. The views of the Arno were stunning, the service was attentive, and the food was delicious. I opted for a simple yet satisfying breakfast of pastries and coffee, fueling up for the day's adventures. Jan enjoyed a hearty omelet, remarking on the freshness of the ingredients. It was the perfect start to a day filled with exploration.

Our first stop was Palazzo Vecchio, a formidable fortress that has stood as a symbol of Florentine power for centuries. As I stood in Piazza della Signoria, gazing up at its imposing façade, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the history contained within its walls. The palace is adorned with ornate marble and flanked by two lions, with an inscription that translates to “King of Kings and Lord of Lords.” Inside, we wandered through the majestic halls, adorned with frescoes and sculptures that told stories of Florence's past. The Salone dei Cinquecento, or Hall of the Five Hundred, was particularly breathtaking, with its towering ceilings and monumental artworks by Giorgio Vasari and, if you look closely, the genius of Michelangelo. I learned that for a time in the late 1800s, Palazzo Vecchio has been the Mayor of Florence’s official seat. It’s incredible to think that even today, the City Council still uses some of the rooms.

Next, we ventured to Casa Buonarroti, the former home of Michelangelo, now a museum dedicated to his life and work. As a librarian specializing in cultural exchange, I was particularly drawn to the museum's collection of Michelangelo's drawings. It was fascinating to see the artist's creative process unfold on paper, to witness the evolution of his ideas and the meticulous detail he poured into each sketch. I learned that Michelangelo, as a sign of his desire for perfection, decided, before his death in Rome in 1564, to burn “many drawings, sketches, and cartoons made with his own hand, so that no one would see the labors he endured and the ways he tried out his own genius, in order to appear nothing but perfect.” Luckily, many drawings were in Florence in the hands of his family when he died. The conferences that are being held at Casa Buonarroti until the end of April 2025, which explore Michelangelo's graphic talent, from his architectural experiments to his connections with classical antiquity, are something I would have loved to attend. Jan, with his keen interest in history, was captivated by the family history and the artifacts on display, gaining a deeper understanding of Michelangelo's personal life and the world in which he lived.

For lunch, we sought out Cuculia, a restaurant recommended for its innovative cuisine and charming atmosphere. Nestled in the Oltrarno neighborhood, the restaurant exuded a cozy, inviting ambiance, a welcome respite from the bustling city streets. The reviews I read online spoke of the restaurant's creative dishes and attentive service. We were greeted with a complimentary starter of pumpkin and carrot soup, a delightful prelude to the culinary experience that awaited us. I opted for the tasting menu, eager to sample a variety of the chef's creations. Each dish was a work of art, both visually stunning and bursting with flavor. Jan chose the sunflower pasta, a dish made with hulled wheat stuffed with goat cheese and honey on a bed of chestnut purée that was scented with fresh thyme. The staff were friendly and accommodating, adding to the overall enjoyment of our meal. It was a truly memorable dining experience, a testament to Florence's vibrant culinary scene.

After lunch, we indulged in a spot of shopping at Davide Cerasi Leather Boutique, a local artisan known for his exquisite leather goods. As someone who appreciates quality craftsmanship, I was immediately drawn to the boutique's collection of handcrafted bags, belts, and jackets. I learned that the shop is the first in the row. The leather was supple and luxurious, the designs timeless and elegant. I ended up purchasing a beautiful leather handbag, a memento of our Florentine adventure. Aoife would have loved to have been here with us! Jan, always practical, opted for a sturdy leather belt, a purchase that he knew would last for years to come.

Our final destination for the day was Piazzale Michelangelo, a panoramic overlook offering unparalleled views of Florence. As we ascended the hill, anticipation grew with each step, the promise of a breathtaking vista spurring us onward. Reaching the top, we were rewarded with a stunning panorama of the city, bathed in the warm glow of the late afternoon sun. The Duomo, Palazzo Vecchio, and Ponte Vecchio stood out against the skyline, iconic landmarks that defined the city's character. I found out that The Iris Garden at Piazzale Michelangelo reopens from April 25 to May 20, 2025. It was the perfect ending to a day filled with exploration and discovery, a moment to reflect on the beauty and history that surrounded us.

As we made our way back to Il Terrazzino Sulla Cattedrale, we decided to dine at Ristorante Borgo San Jacopo. The restaurant has a Michelin star and I read that it has elegant and exclusive style. We were not disappointed. The service was impeccable and the food was delicious. I opted for the chef's tasting menu, which was a culinary journey through the region's flavors. Jan chose the grilled sea bass, which was cooked to perfection. The restaurant's romantic ambiance and stunning views of the Arno made it the perfect place to end our day.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Basilica of Santa Croce, Museo Galileo, and Piazza Santa Trinita. I am particularly excited to see the Basilica of Santa Croce, which houses the tombs of many famous Italians, including Michelangelo and Galileo. I am also looking forward to visiting the Museo Galileo, which showcases the history of science and technology in Florence. I wonder what tomorrow will bring?

To travel is to take a journey into yourself.

Back at our hotel, I couldn't help but reflect on the day's experiences. Florence had exceeded all expectations, captivating us with its beauty, history, and culture. As I drifted off to sleep, I dreamt of Renaissance masterpieces and breathtaking vistas, eager to see what tomorrow would bring.
