Day 6: Echoes of the Past: Exploring Connemara's Hidden Gems
Discover the enchanting history of Connemara with visits to ancient castles, serene gardens, and lively pubs. A day of Irish charm!
Whispers of History and Laughter
Today was a journey through time, a day where the echoes of Ireland's past resonated in every stone and every story. From ancient castles to blossoming gardens and the warmth of a traditional pub, Connemara revealed its heart and soul. It was a day of discovery, reflection, and, of course, plenty of laughter shared with Jan and Aoife.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the Ardagh Hotel & Restaurant. Celebrating its 40th anniversary, this family-run hotel exudes a charm that's hard to resist. It felt like stepping into a warm embrace, with its unfussy, intimate atmosphere. Overlooking the breathtaking views of Connemara's land and seascapes, we enjoyed a delicious meal. I savored every bite, knowing that the Ardagh Hotel is one of the last of its kind in Ireland. It's a place where old-fashioned rest and relaxation are still cherished, and where the food is a testament to the best that Connemara has to offer. It was a perfect way to fuel up for our day of exploration.

After breakfast, we set off to Aughnanure Castle, a 16th-century tower house that was once the stronghold of the O'Flaherty clan. As we approached the castle, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at its imposing structure. The castle stands proudly on a rocky island, surrounded by the Drimmeen River, a testament to the O'Flaherty's strategic brilliance. The name Aughnanure, meaning the field of the yews, hints at the extensive yew forest that once stretched from the site to Galway. It felt like stepping back in time, imagining the fierce O'Flaherty chieftains who once ruled these lands.

Exploring the castle, we learned about its rich history, from its construction in the late 15th century to its role in the Cromwellian siege of Galway. Aoife was particularly fascinated by the stories of the O'Flaherty clan, one of the most influential and feared families in Connacht. Jan, ever the history enthusiast, was captivated by the castle's architecture, noting the unusual double bawn enclosure and the unique round watchtower. I couldn't help but imagine what life must have been like within those walls, the sounds of clashing swords, the whispers of secret meetings, and the laughter of celebrations.
History is not just a collection of dates and facts, but a tapestry woven with the stories of people who lived, loved, and fought for what they believed in.
Leaving Aughnanure Castle, we drove to Clifden Monastery Walled Garden, a serene oasis of beauty and tranquility. Enclosed by historic stone walls, the garden felt like a secret world, far removed from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. As we wandered through the carefully curated pathways, we were greeted by a symphony of colors and scents, vibrant flowers, lush greenery, and charming seating areas. It was a feast for the senses, a place to reflect and find solace amidst the beauty of nature.

Aoife was delighted by the variety of local flora, while Jan found peace in the quiet corners of the garden. I was particularly moved by the history of the garden, knowing that it was once tended to by monks who sought solace and connection with nature within these very walls. It was a reminder that even in the most turbulent of times, there is always beauty to be found, and that nature has the power to heal and inspire.
For lunch, we stopped at Marconi Restaurant Clifden, a charming family-run establishment managed by the Foyles for over a century. The restaurant is steeped in history, filled with artifacts that tell the story of Connemara and the hotel itself. As we savored our meal, we were surrounded by memorabilia of Guglielmo Marconi. It was fascinating to learn about Marconi's connection to Clifden and his pioneering work in wireless communication. The meal was delicious, featuring fresh, seasonal ingredients sourced locally, with a focus on seafood and traditional Irish favorites.

In the late afternoon, we ventured to Paddy Coynes Pub, a legendary establishment dating back to 1811. Located in the heart of Tullycross, this pub is a treasure trove of local history and artifacts. From the moment we stepped inside, we were enveloped in the warmth and conviviality of a traditional Irish pub. The air was filled with the sound of laughter, the clinking of glasses, and the lively chatter of locals and tourists alike.

Jan and I enjoyed a pint of Guinness, while Aoife sipped on a refreshing lemonade. We listened to the stories of the bartender, a local character with a twinkle in his eye and a wealth of knowledge about the area. We learned about the pub's history as a one-stop shop for groceries, pints, and even funerals. We heard tales of the pub's connection to the Titanic, as it once sold tickets for the ill-fated voyage. It was a reminder that even in the most remote corners of the world, history is always present, waiting to be discovered.
Before dinner, we took a detour to Glynsk House for a pre-dinner drink. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the staff were incredibly friendly. The building overlooks Bertraughboy Bay, Cashel Hill, and the Twelve Bens mountains, offering an ideal spot for photo opportunities. Glynsk House combines the best of Irish crafts and fashion and local seafood, creating a unique experience.

For dinner, we returned to Glynsk House and indulged in a delicious meal of local seafood. As we ate, we reflected on the day's adventures, sharing our favorite moments and laughing at our missteps. It was a perfect ending to a day filled with history, beauty, and the warmth of human connection.
As I sit here now, writing these words, I can still feel the echoes of the past resonating within me. The stories of Aughnanure Castle, the serenity of Clifden Monastery Walled Garden, and the warmth of Paddy Coynes Pub have all left an indelible mark on my soul. It was a day that reminded me of the importance of connecting with our history, appreciating the beauty of nature, and cherishing the simple joys of life.
Tomorrow marks the final day of our Connemara adventure. We plan to visit the Connemara National Park Viewpoint and Ballynahinch Castle. Before heading to the airport, we'll make a stop at Lowry's Sweater and Gift Shop to pick up a few souvenirs to remind us of our time here. I'm already feeling a pang of sadness that our journey is coming to an end, but I know that the memories we've made will last a lifetime. I am looking forward to returning to Warsaw, and sharing my new experiences with my librarian colleagues, especially those interested in Irish history and culture.
