A Final Embrace of Emerald

As our week-long family escape to Connemara draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the memories we've created. This journey back to my roots, shared with Jan and Aoife, has been nothing short of magical. Today, we set out to capture the essence of Connemara one last time, visiting breathtaking viewpoints, delving into the region's rich history, and savoring the tastes that define this corner of Ireland.

Our final day in Connemara began with a hearty breakfast at Bláth Fiáin in An Spidéal. The bistro was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day with a taste of authentic Irish cuisine. I opted for the traditional Irish breakfast, complete with black and white pudding, while Jan enjoyed a smoked salmon omelet, and Aoife chose the vegetarian-friendly avocado toast. It was the perfect way to fuel up for our day of exploration.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we set off towards Connemara National Park. The anticipation was building as we approached the Connemara National Park Viewpoint. I was eager to share a place that held so many childhood memories. As we drove, I reminisced about my own childhood adventures in these hills, stories that made Aoife giggle and Jan smile knowingly. The weather in Connemara in January can be temperamental, but today, we were blessed with a crisp, clear morning. The sun peeked through the clouds, casting a golden glow over the landscape. The average temperature in Connemara in January typically ranges from about 5°C to 10°C, but the brisk air only added to the invigorating experience.

Arriving at the viewpoint, we were greeted by a panorama that stretched as far as the eye could see. The rugged mountains, blanketed in shades of brown and green, met the wild Atlantic coast in a symphony of natural beauty. From our vantage point, we could see the Twelve Bens mountain range, their peaks dusted with a light coating of winter frost. Inishbofin and other islands dotted the horizon, their silhouettes stark against the shimmering sea. I pointed out Tully Mountain, also known as Letter Hill, sharing local stories and folklore connected to the landscape. It was a moment of pure serenity, a reminder of the simple joys in life.

"The best view comes after the hardest climb."

We spent a good hour at the viewpoint, soaking in the scenery and snapping photos to capture the moment. Aoife, ever the budding photographer, experimented with different angles and filters, while Jan, the history enthusiast, read aloud from our guidebook about the geological formations of the area. I simply stood there, breathing in the fresh air and feeling a sense of belonging wash over me. It was a moment of connection, not just with the landscape, but with my own past.

Leaving the viewpoint, we continued our journey towards Ballynahinch Castle, a place steeped in history and elegance. As we approached the castle, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe. Its imposing facade, set against the backdrop of the Owenmore River and the surrounding woodland, was a sight to behold. Ballynahinch Castle has a rich history, dating back to the 16th century when the O'Flaherty Clan, including the famous pirate queen Grace O'Malley, first built a fortification on the site. Over the centuries, the castle has been home to colorful figures such as Richard Martin, also known as 'Humanity Dick,' who founded the RSPCA, and Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji, an Indian prince and cricketing legend.

We explored the castle grounds, wandering through the terraced gardens and along the banks of the river. The air was filled with the sound of rushing water and the chirping of birds. Inside the castle, we admired the antique interiors and original period features, imagining what life must have been like for those who once called this place home. Jan was particularly fascinated by the history of Richard Martin, while Aoife was captivated by the stories of Grace O'Malley.

For lunch, we decided to try the Fisherman's Pub at Ballynahinch Castle. The pub exuded a cozy and inviting atmosphere, with wood-paneled walls, fishing memorabilia, and a roaring fireplace. We ordered a selection of traditional Irish dishes, including seafood chowder, fish and chips, and a hearty venison pie. The food was delicious, and the portions were generous. As we ate, we listened to the lively chatter of locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the warmth and hospitality of this iconic establishment.

Before leaving Ballynahinch, we made a stop at Lowry's Sweater and Gift Shop - Irish Gift Shop Of The Year, a charming boutique in nearby Clifden. I wanted to find a special souvenir to remind us of our trip, and Lowry's was the perfect place to do so. The shop was filled with a wide array of Irish crafts, from hand-knitted Aran sweaters to delicate jewelry and pottery. I finally settled on a beautiful Connemara marble pendant for myself and a cozy Aran sweater for Aoife. Jan, of course, chose a book on Irish history.

As the day drew to a close, we drove towards Screebe House for our final dinner in Connemara. Screebe House is an historic country house that has been lovingly restored. The restaurant at Screebe House offers a culinary experience, with a focus on seasonal organic produce. We started with pre-dinner drinks on the terrace, enjoying the views over the rose garden and Camus Bay. For dinner, we savored the flavors of Connemara's finest produce, prepared with creativity and care by the talented chefs. The atmosphere was elegant and refined, yet relaxed and welcoming. It was the perfect way to end our week-long culinary journey through Connemara.

As we savored our last meal, we reminisced about our favorite moments from the trip: the breathtaking views from Diamond Hill, the historical charm of Ballynahinch Castle, and the warmth of the local people. This trip back to Connemara has been more than just a vacation; it's been a journey of rediscovery, connection, and family bonding. The landscape, the history, and the people of Connemara have woven their magic around our hearts, leaving us with memories that will last a lifetime.

Tomorrow, we head back to Dublin for our flight to Warsaw. I know I will carry a piece of Connemara with me, a reminder of the enduring beauty and spirit of this special place. Though it's hard to say goodbye, I know that we'll be back again someday. Until then, I'll cherish the memories of our family journey to Connemara, a place that will always hold a special place in my heart. This trip has only deepened my resolve to explore more of Ireland's hidden corners, perhaps next time venturing into the heart of Irish mythology and folklore, themes that resonate deeply with my soul. Perhaps a journey through the ancient sites of the Burren or a trek along the rugged coast of Donegal. The possibilities are endless, and the spirit of adventure is alive and well within me. For now, however, it's time to return to Warsaw, to my books, and to the familiar rhythms of daily life, enriched by the memories of this Connemara sojourn. I'm already looking forward to sharing my experiences with the patrons of my library, inspiring them to embark on their own journeys of discovery, whether to the far corners of the world or to the hidden gems within their own communities. And who knows, perhaps I'll even start a Polish-Irish cultural exchange program, bringing the beauty and spirit of Connemara to my adopted homeland. The possibilities are as vast and varied as the landscapes of Ireland itself. Good bye, Connemara, until we meet again.
