Finding the Source

As my time in the Masurian Lake District draws to a close, I find myself contemplating the journey's end and the quiet discoveries made along the way. It’s remarkable how a landscape so defined by water can also lead to profound moments of introspection. Today was about tracing the origins of life-giving waters and paying homage to echoes of the past.

My final day began with a hearty breakfast at Restauracja Port [i]. Though I’d been looking forward to a traditional Polish meal, I opted for the Serowy Bajgiel, a cheese bagel, with baked potato and fried eggs. It was absolutely delicious, and fueled me up for the day ahead!

First on the agenda was Źródła Rzeki Łyny, the source of the Łyna River. The morning air was crisp, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth as I set out. The reserve is named after Roman Kobendza, a famous Polish botanist and dendrologist who dedicated much time to researching the sources. The area is a vast valley with numerous side ravines and valleys with steep slopes. The highest point in the reserve is located at a height of 190.7 m above sea level. The bottom of the gorge at the highest point of the Łyna river sources is located at a height of approximately 150 m above sea level. The area is covered by deciduous forest.

As I walked deeper into the forest, the sounds of civilization faded, replaced by the rustling of leaves and the chirping of birds. The trails wound through a landscape sculpted by the last Baltic glaciation, creating almost vertical walls on the slopes of the valley. The path felt almost like a mountain trail, and I had to watch my footing carefully.

The source itself was a humble spring, quietly bubbling up from the earth. I sat for a while, simply observing the water's journey from the ground into a small stream, eventually becoming the river that carves its way through the Warmia-Masuria region. It was a moment of quiet reverence, connecting me to the natural world in a way that only solitude can allow. According to one legend, the Łyna River was the daughter of the King of a Thousand Lakes. Another tale tells of a beautiful girl named Lana who was not allowed to marry her love, Dobrzyn. Her tears fell upon the earth, creating the source of the river.

Sometimes, the most profound discoveries are found not in grand monuments, but in the quiet corners of the natural world.

After leaving the serene embrace of the river's origin, I headed towards the Hindenburg Mausoleum. The mausoleum is located in Olsztynek, and serves as a memorial to Paul von Hindenburg, a German military leader who later became President of Germany. The structure is surrounded by greenery, making it a tranquil spot for those seeking education and tranquility.

The mausoleum was originally built between 1924 and 1927 as a memorial to those fallen next to the war cemetery of the Battle of Tannenberg. In 1934-1935, it was rebuilt, and from 1934, it served as Hindenburg's mausoleum. Hindenburg was buried there in 1934, with Adolf Hitler in attendance. In January 1945, the mausoleum was blown up by the Germans, and then dismantled after the war.

Standing before the monument, I couldn't help but reflect on the weight of history. The mausoleum, though now a place of reflection, once stood as a symbol of a tumultuous past. It served as a reminder of how landscapes and monuments bear witness to the shifting tides of human events. After the war, a park was created on the site of the war cemetery between the monument and Olsztynek.

Lunch was at Karczma Nad Łyną, a restaurant recommended for its regional cuisine. I ordered the żurek soup, known for its creamy texture and high-quality sausage. The staff were dressed in traditional regional attire, which added to the restaurant's charm.

With the afternoon sun beginning to dip, I made my way back towards Olsztyn, stopping briefly at Buła, a local bar. I savored a quiet drink, watching locals gather and sharing stories. It was a fitting end to a day of exploration and reflection.

Dinner at Restauracja Warmia Olsztyn was a delightful culinary experience. I enjoyed the regional cuisine, savoring the flavors of Warmia one last time. It was a perfect way to reminisce about the journey and the beautiful landscapes I had traversed. The restaurant is located on the shore of Lake Ukiel. The restaurant closed in September 2024, but the owner hinted that they would soon be opening a new establishment.

As I prepare to leave the Masurian Lake District, I carry with me memories of tranquil waters, whispering forests, and the echoes of history. This solo journey has been a profound experience, allowing me to connect with nature and myself in ways I hadn't anticipated. I am grateful for the opportunity to have shared this adventure with you, dear readers, and I hope it inspires you to seek out your own serene escapes.

Tomorrow, I head back to Warsaw, carrying with me the tranquility of the lakes and forests. The train journey will be a time for reflection,整理my thoughts and memories of this beautiful region. While this chapter closes, the journey of discovery never truly ends. Until next time, may your travels be filled with peace and wonder.
