Solo Adventure in Kerlingarfjöll: Embracing Iceland's Geothermal Wonders
Day 1: Golden Beginnings: Waterfalls and Wonders on Iceland's Famous Circle
Embark on a journey through Iceland's Golden Circle, where thundering waterfalls and tectonic marvels await. Discover the magic of Iceland!
Chasing Waterfalls and Continental Divides
Today marked the official start of my solo adventure in Iceland, and what better way to kick it off than by immersing myself in the iconic Golden Circle? I was eager to witness the raw power of Gullfoss, explore the historical depths of Thingvellir National Park, and breathe in the crisp Icelandic air. After months of planning from my cozy Warsaw apartment, surrounded by books on Polish-Irish cultural exchange, the day had finally arrived.
The day began with a hearty breakfast at Ásgarður in Kerlingarfjöll. The food was hearty and warming, perfect for the day ahead. Fuelled up, I set off to Gullfoss Nature Reserve. The drive itself was a treat, with the landscape morphing into a surreal canvas of volcanic rock and moss-covered plains. As I approached Gullfoss, the roar of the water grew louder, a symphony of nature's power that sent shivers down my spine. The mist danced in the air, catching the sunlight and creating fleeting rainbows that added to the magical atmosphere. It was quite chilly, perhaps I should have remembered my power bank to keep my phone charged; oh well, a lesson learned for the days ahead!
Explore the breathtaking beauty of Gullfoss Nature Reserve, where nature's power meets serene landscapes in the heart of Iceland.
Gullfoss, the Golden Falls, truly lived up to its name. The Hvítá river plunged into the rugged canyon in two dramatic tiers, creating a spectacle of thunderous beauty. I spent a good hour simply watching the water, mesmerized by its relentless energy and the sheer scale of the falls. The Gullfoss Store was a welcome respite from the elements. I picked up a small magnet as a memento and browsed the selection of woolen goods, thinking of Jan and how much he would have loved a traditional Icelandic sweater. I decided to save the serious souvenir shopping for later in the trip; I have a feeling there will be plenty of opportunities.
The earth has music for those who listen.
Next on the agenda was Thingvellir National Park, a place where history and geology intertwine in the most captivating way. As I walked through the Almannagjá gorge, the rift valley between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the forces that have shaped this landscape. It’s incredible to stand between two continents, a tangible reminder of the earth’s ever-changing nature. I thought about Aoife, my daughter, and how she would have loved to snorkel in the Silfra fissure; perhaps on our next trip together, we can add that to our itinerary.

Thingvellir is also a place steeped in history, the site of Iceland's first parliament, the Althing, founded in 930 AD. Walking through the park, I could almost hear the echoes of the Viking settlers who gathered here to make laws and celebrate their culture. It struck me how this place, with its dramatic geological formations, served as the birthplace of a nation. It’s a powerful testament to the connection between the land and its people, a theme that resonates deeply with my own interest in cultural heritage.
As the day drew to a close, I made my way back to Kerlingarfjöll, reflecting on the incredible sights I had witnessed. The Golden Circle is more than just a tourist route; it's a journey through Iceland's heart and soul. The raw power of Gullfoss, the geological wonders of Thingvellir, and the sheer beauty of the Icelandic landscape have left an indelible mark on my soul. It reminded me of home, of County Mayo, of the rugged landscape of Connemara. This trip is already shaping up to be an extraordinary adventure.
Back at Ásgarður, I enjoyed a comforting dinner, savoring the flavors of Icelandic cuisine. The warmth of the restaurant was a welcome contrast to the chilly weather outside, and I found myself chatting with fellow travelers, sharing stories and experiences. There's a unique camaraderie among those who venture into the wilderness, a shared appreciation for the beauty and challenges of the natural world.
As I prepare for tomorrow's adventures, which include exploring Kerlingardalur and hopefully soaking in the Hrunalaug Hot Spring, I can't help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation. The weather forecast predicts light snow, so I'll be sure to pack my warmest layers and embrace whatever surprises the day may bring. Perhaps I'll even stop by the Highland Base at Kerlingarfjöll for a nightcap after a long day of exploring.
Before drifting off to sleep in my tent, I made a mental note to buy a power bank at the first opportunity. And perhaps some sunscreen too – you never know when the Icelandic sun might decide to make an appearance, even in June! Tonight, the wind howls around my tent, a lullaby of the highlands that soothes me into a peaceful slumber. Tomorrow, new adventures await, and I can't wait to see what Iceland has in store for me.
This solo journey is already proving to be a transformative experience, a chance to reconnect with nature, reflect on my passions, and find inspiration for my travel blog. And who knows, maybe I'll even pick up a few new stories to share with Jan and Aoife when I return to Warsaw. After all, travel is not just about seeing new places; it's about expanding our horizons and enriching our lives.
I am so excited for the next few days, and I am so grateful for this opportunity to explore this beautiful country. I know that this trip will be one that I will never forget. Iceland is truly a land of wonder, and I can't wait to see what else it has in store for me. I wonder what other hidden treasures I'll stumble upon during my time here. I am eager to discover more about Iceland's cultural heritage and its commitment to sustainable living. I hope to bring back some valuable insights and ideas that I can share with my community in Warsaw, fostering a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of our world.
I feel like I'm on the edge of something great, something transformative. I'm ready to embrace the unknown, to challenge myself, and to grow as a person. I'm ready to let Iceland work its magic on me. It feels good to be in my 50s and experiencing something like this. It's a time of life when you have the wisdom and experience to appreciate the journey, but still the energy and curiosity to explore the world. I'm so glad I didn't let fear or doubt hold me back from embarking on this adventure. I'm proving to myself that I can do anything I set my mind to, and that's a powerful feeling.
I am curious to see what adventures tomorrow brings!
