A Day of Blue Hues and Cultural Views
Today was all about diving deeper into the heart of Chefchaouen, embracing its unique charm, and soaking in the local culture. It’s amazing how a single color can define an entire city, and I was eager to uncover more of its secrets. Eleanor would have loved this place, she always appreciates unique cultural experiences.
My day began with a delightful breakfast at Restaurant Hamsa. The Hamsa offers a cozy atmosphere and a menu filled with Moroccan and Mediterranean flavors. I opted for the Beldi breakfast – orange juice, mint tea, homemade bread, local cheese, olives, and eggs. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. Kenji would have enjoyed the fresh orange juice, he always asks for it in the mornings.
With a full stomach, I set out to meet our guide for a tour with Blue Medina Tours. Wandering through the labyrinthine streets with someone who knew every nook and cranny was invaluable. He shared stories about the history of Chefchaouen, the significance of the blue color (apparently, it was introduced by Jewish refugees and is meant to represent the sky and heaven) , and the daily life of its residents. It was fascinating to learn about the traditions and customs that have shaped this unique town. It reminded me of when Eleanor and I first moved to Bristol, discovering all the hidden gems with the help of locals.
One of the highlights of the tour was visiting the B & H Art Shop. This charming shop is more than just a place to buy souvenirs; it’s an immersion into Moroccan culture and artistry. I was captivated by the exquisite handmade garments, each telling a story through its intricate designs. I picked up a beautiful scarf for Eleanor, knowing she’d appreciate the craftsmanship and the vibrant colors. Shodo, the Japanese calligraphy, has always made me appreciate different forms of art, and this shop was a wonderful example of Moroccan artistry.
For lunch, we stopped at Restaurant Dar El Salam. Nestled in the heart of the blue city, this restaurant offered a warm and inviting atmosphere. I indulged in a traditional tagine, savoring the rich flavors and aromatic spices. The staff was incredibly friendly, making the dining experience even more enjoyable. It was a perfect spot to relax and soak in the ambiance of Chefchaouen.
After lunch, I decided to venture out on my own, eager to see Bouzafer Mosque. Perched on a hill overlooking Chefchaouen, the mosque offered panoramic views of the town and the surrounding Rif Mountains. The climb was a bit strenuous, but the vista from the top was well worth the effort. The sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the blue-washed buildings, creating a magical scene. It was a moment of pure serenity, a chance to reflect on the beauty of this unique place. The mosque itself has an interesting history, originally built by the Spanish during their occupation but never fully embraced by the local population. It’s now a popular spot for tourists seeking breathtaking views, and I could see why.
As the day drew to a close, I found myself at RESTAURANT CASA ANDALUZ for dinner. The restaurant's menu featured Mediterranean and Moroccan cuisine. I savored a delicious chicken dish, followed by a refreshing fruit salad. The restaurant had a calm atmosphere, perfect for winding down after a busy day.
Before heading back to the hotel, I took one last stroll through the medina, soaking in the sights and sounds of Chefchaouen at night. The blue streets took on a different character under the soft glow of the streetlights, creating an enchanting atmosphere. It reminded me of the quiet evenings Eleanor and I spend walking along the harbor in Bristol, enjoying the peace and tranquility of the night.
Tomorrow marks the last day of our adventure in Chefchaouen. We’re planning a trip to Akchour and Grande Cascade D'akchour, hoping to experience the natural beauty just outside the city. We’ll have breakfast at Chez Foad, lunch at Restaurant Ali Baba, and dinner at Hôtel restaurant La fuente. I’m also hoping to check out Cafe Clock for a relaxing evening. I’m looking forward to seeing what else Chefchaouen has to offer before we bid farewell to this enchanting blue pearl.
Chefchaouen has a certain magic that’s hard to describe. It's a place where time seems to slow down, where the simple act of wandering through the streets becomes an adventure, and where the color blue takes on a whole new meaning. I’m grateful for the opportunity to experience this unique corner of the world and to share it with you all. It’s experiences like these that remind me why I love to travel and to explore new cultures, and I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.
