Family Cultural Adventure in Chiang Mai
Day 2: Chiang Mai's Spiritual Heights and Culinary Delights
Exploring the sacred Doi Suthep and savoring Chiang Mai's vegan delights, followed by riverside dining and a cozy wine bar experience.
A Day of Temples, Tastes, and Tranquility
Today was a beautiful blend of spiritual exploration and culinary indulgence here in Chiang Mai. It's amazing how much you can pack into a single day when you're surrounded by such rich culture and vibrant energy. Eleanor, Kenji and I ventured out, ready to embrace the day's itinerary, and Chiang Mai did not disappoint.
Our morning began with a hearty and healthy breakfast at Goodsouls Kitchen - Vegan Restaurant. I've been trying to incorporate more plant-based meals into my diet, influenced by the growing vegan scene back in Bristol. I must say, this place set the bar high! The atmosphere was so welcoming, and the food was incredibly flavorful. Kenji even enjoyed his sesame pancakes, which is a win in my book, considering his usual preference for more familiar fare. Eleanor opted for the tofu scramble, and I indulged in the Khao Soi soup. The portions were generous, and every dish was cooked with love. What a way to kickstart our day!

With our bellies full and spirits high, we set off to explore the magnificent Doi Suthep-Pui National Park. The drive up the mountain was an adventure in itself, with winding roads offering breathtaking views of Chiang Mai below. The air grew cooler and crisper as we ascended, a welcome change from the city's warmth. Even in January, the park was lush and green, a testament to the region's natural beauty. January in Chiang Mai is a breath of fresh air, with mild temperatures making it ideal for outdoor adventures. The average temperatures range from a cool 10°C in the mornings to a pleasant 25°C during the day.

Travel is not just about seeing new places, but about experiencing new perspectives.
Doi Suthep-Pui National Park, with Doi Pui as its highest peak at 1,685 meters, offered us a chance to connect with nature and immerse ourselves in the local culture. Although we didn't make it to the summit of Doi Pui, the waterfalls along the way were a sight to behold. The park is home to mixed deciduous and evergreen forests, teeming with diverse flora and fauna. I was hoping to spot some of the local wildlife, like the red jungle fowl or wild boar, but perhaps next time!
The highlight of our visit to the national park was undoubtedly Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. The temple's golden chedi shimmered in the sunlight, a beacon of spirituality that drew us closer. Climbing the Naga-guarded staircase was a bit of a workout, but the panoramic views from the top were worth every step. Inside the temple, we marveled at the intricate details of the architecture and the serene atmosphere that permeated the space. It was truly a humbling experience to witness the devotion of the local people and to learn about the temple's rich history.
After soaking in the spiritual ambiance of Doi Suthep, we descended back into the city and headed towards Wat Chedi Luang. This ancient temple, located in the heart of Chiang Mai's old city, is a testament to the region's rich cultural heritage. Dating back to the 14th century, Wat Chedi Luang once housed the Emerald Buddha, one of Thailand's most sacred relics. Although the original Emerald Buddha has since been moved to Bangkok, a replica now sits in the temple's reconstructed eastern niche.

The temple's iconic stupa, known as the Grand Chedi, dominates the skyline of Chiang Mai's Old City. Despite being partially damaged by an earthquake in 1545, the stupa remains an awe-inspiring sight, standing at approximately 60 meters in height. As we wandered through the temple grounds, we admired the intricate carvings and sculptures that adorned the buildings and chedi. The serene atmosphere and the presence of monks going about their daily routines added to the temple's spiritual allure.
For lunch, we ventured to Jen Moy Local Thai Restaurant, a place recommended by a local we met at Wat Chedi Luang. It was a bit of a hidden gem, tucked away on a quiet street, but the food was absolutely incredible. Eleanor and I shared the grilled beef with tamarind sauce, which was cooked to perfection. The flavors were bold and authentic, a true taste of Northern Thailand. Kenji, being a bit less adventurous, opted for the Pad Thai, which he devoured in minutes. The friendly service and cozy atmosphere made it a truly memorable dining experience.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to the Paak Dang Riverside Restaurant for dinner. The restaurant's location along the Ping River offered stunning views, creating a romantic and tranquil setting. The staff were incredibly welcoming and attentive, making us feel right at home. We savored a variety of traditional Thai dishes, each bursting with flavor and spice. The Roasted Duck Curry was particularly delicious, with the rich curry paste complementing the tender duck perfectly. Paak Dang is known for its commitment to social change, employing and training less privileged people from neighboring villages and hill tribes. It felt good to support a restaurant that not only served delicious food but also made a positive impact on the community. The owners, K-Lin and K-Jin, have created a welcoming atmosphere, and the staff's enthusiasm is contagious.

To cap off our evening, Eleanor and I decided to visit the Writer's Club & Wine Bar. This charming establishment has gained a reputation as the unofficial press club of Chiang Mai, attracting journalists, writers, and media personalities. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, with live acoustic performances adding to the ambiance. We enjoyed a selection of quality wines and tasty food specials while engaging in deep conversations with fellow travelers and locals. The Writer's Club & Wine Bar is a popular spot among expats and locals alike, offering a cozy and intimate setting for socializing and unwinding.
