Whispers of the Past, Tastes of Today

Today was a journey through time and taste, a day where the ancient stones of Cusco whispered their stories and the vibrant flavors of Peruvian cuisine danced on my palate. It’s amazing how much history and culture can be packed into a single day, especially when you're exploring solo and can fully immerse yourself in every moment.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at DEVA - Cocina Andina. I decided to try their take on Lomo Saltado, a dish I've quickly grown fond of here in Cusco. It was a delicious start, fueling me for the day's adventures. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly welcoming, making me feel right at home.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off to Huaca Sapantiana. The walk there was lovely, a gentle climb away from the bustling city center. As I approached the site, I was immediately struck by the tranquility of the place. The Huaca Sapantiana, a sacred site from the Inca Empire, stands as a testament to their spiritual and architectural ingenuity. The intricate stonework and the surrounding vegetation created a serene atmosphere that captivated my senses. I spent a good hour wandering through the ruins, imagining the rituals and ceremonies that once took place here.

The stones of Cusco whisper stories of a civilization that revered nature and the cosmos, a legacy that continues to resonate in the city's vibrant culture.

The aqueduct itself is a fascinating piece of colonial architecture, built by the Jesuit Order in the 17th and 18th centuries. It was built over the P'ujru River and has a four-level structure with arches. I learned that water used to flow through this canal, supplying the city of Cusco. It's amazing to see how the Incas and the Spanish colonists harnessed the natural resources of this region. I took some photos, trying to capture the beauty of the aqueduct and the surrounding landscape.

Next on my list was Calle Loreto, a narrow cobblestone street known for its perfectly preserved Inca walls. As I strolled along, I couldn't help but marvel at the precision and skill of the Inca architects. The walls are made of massive stone blocks, fitted together so tightly that you can't even slip a knife between them. It's a testament to their engineering prowess that these walls have withstood earthquakes and the test of time. I learned that in Inca times, this street was part of the palace of Huayna Capac, known as the 'Amaru Cancha' or place of the snake. The street also adjoined the 'Acllahuasi' (house of the chosen ones), a place where Inca princesses who worshipped the sun were imprisoned. The walls have a slight tilt and feature neatly aligned rows of stones in different sizes.

The street was bustling with activity, vendors selling handicrafts and souvenirs. I resisted the urge to buy anything, knowing that I still had a few more days in Cusco and plenty of time for shopping. Instead, I focused on soaking in the atmosphere and appreciating the unique blend of Inca and colonial architecture.

For lunch, I headed to Marcelo Batata Restaurante, drawn in by the promise of a rooftop terrace and a cozy interior. The ambiance was indeed a blend of friendly, upscale, and romantic. I decided to try their Alpaca steak, a local specialty. It was cooked to perfection, tender and flavorful, and the view from the terrace was simply stunning. I could see the entire city of Cusco spread out before me, a tapestry of red-tiled roofs and ancient stone walls. Apparently they also offer cooking classes, which could be fun to try sometime.

After lunch, I made my way to Qochapata, an archaeological site located on a hill overlooking Cusco. The name Qochapata comes from the Quechua words for “lake” (qucha) and “elevated place” (pata). The site is not heavily trafficked, allowing for a peaceful exploration experience. The climb to the top was a bit challenging, but the panoramic views were well worth the effort. From here, I could see the entire city, the surrounding valleys, and the distant Andean peaks. It was a truly breathtaking sight, and I felt a sense of awe and wonder at the beauty of this land.

Qochapata itself is an interesting site, with remnants of ancient terraces and stone foundations. I learned that it was likely a ceremonial site or a strategic lookout point. I spent some time wandering around, imagining what life must have been like for the people who lived here centuries ago. The site sits near the K'enko Eucalyptus Forest, a verdant expanse of towering trees that perfume the air with their crisp, medicinal scent. It was a perfect place to unwind and contemplate the ancient civilization that once thrived here.

As evening approached, I made my way back down the hill and into the city. I decided to treat myself to dinner at Mama Seledonia, a restaurant known for its traditional Peruvian cuisine and its warm, welcoming atmosphere. The restaurant is known for its homey decor and the intimate atmosphere. I had heard great things about Mama Seledonia herself, and I was eager to try her cooking. I wasn't disappointed. I ordered the trout, and it was perfectly cooked and seasoned.

After dinner, I decided to check out the Black Cat Bar Cusco - Craft Cocktails & Spirits. It was a trendy, modern bar with an extensive cocktail menu. I ordered a Pisco Sour, of course, and sipped it slowly as I listened to the music and watched the people go by. The atmosphere was lively and fun, and it was a great way to end the day.

As I walked back to my hotel, Wayra Dreams, I reflected on all that I had seen and done today. From the ancient ruins of Huaca Sapantiana and Qochapata to the vibrant streets of Cusco and the delicious flavors of Peruvian cuisine, it had been a day of cultural immersion and sensory overload. I felt grateful for the opportunity to experience this amazing city and to learn about its rich history and culture. I’m also glad I didn’t forget my portable charger today, as I took a lot of photos!

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the San Blas Waterfall and caves, as well as the Huaca Park Site Cuzco. I’m also hoping to do some shopping at TEXTILES POMATAYLLA and have dinner at Republica Del Pisco - Cusco. It sounds like another exciting day ahead! I’m also looking forward to trying out Something Special Cusco and Rucula Peruvian Restaurant.

I couldn’t help but think of Eleanor and Kenji as I explored the ancient sites and savored the local flavors. I made a mental note to bring them back here someday, so they too can experience the magic of Cusco. For now, I’ll continue to soak in the culture and capture as many memories as I can.

As I drift off to sleep, I’m filled with a sense of contentment and gratitude. Cusco is a city that truly captivates the soul, and I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.
