Farewell, Shikoku!

As our Shikoku adventure draws to a close, I can't help but feel a pang of sadness mixed with immense gratitude. This island has offered us so much – breathtaking landscapes, profound cultural experiences, and, most importantly, quality time together as a family. Today, we set out to explore a few more of its hidden gems before heading back to Germany, cherishing the memories we've made.

Our final day began with a hearty breakfast at Eki-mae Shokudo. Maximilian and I enjoyed the traditional Japanese breakfast set, while Elena devoured a bowl of warm udon noodles. It's amazing how such simple, local flavors can be so satisfying and comforting. Fueled up for the day, we embarked on our first adventure: Ōboke Gorge.

Ōboke Gorge: A River's Tale

The drive to Ōboke Gorge was stunning, winding through lush green valleys with the Yoshino River snaking alongside the road. The gorge itself is a dramatic display of nature's power, with steep, rocky walls carved by the relentless flow of the river over millennia. The name Ōboke translates to big dangerous steps, a testament to the gorge's formidable terrain. We opted for a gentle sightseeing boat ride, which allowed us to appreciate the unique rock formations and the vibrant green foliage clinging to the cliffs. Elena was particularly excited, pointing out rocks that resembled animals and mythical creatures. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the sheer scale and beauty of the gorge. It was the perfect way to start our day, immersing ourselves in the raw, untamed beauty of Shikoku's natural landscape.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quiet corners of the world, away from the crowds and the noise.

Ryugado Museum: A Journey Through Time

Next on our itinerary was the Ryugado Museum , near the Ryugado Cave, one of Japan's largest limestone caves.

The museum offered a fascinating glimpse into the cave's history and formation, with exhibits showcasing artifacts dating back to the prehistoric Yayoi period. It was incredible to learn that people once lived in these caves, seeking shelter and sustenance within its depths. Elena was captivated by the displays of ancient pottery and tools, imagining what life must have been like for those early inhabitants. The museum also highlighted the diverse ecosystem within the cave, home to over a hundred species of animals, including bats. After the museum, we considered venturing into the Ryugado Cave itself, but Elena was a bit tired, so we decided to save that adventure for another time. However, I did learn about the adventure course, where you can crawl through narrow passageways and climb wooden ladders. That sounds like something Maximilian would enjoy!

Aji Ryuozan Park: Art Meets Nature

Our final stop of the day was Aji Ryuozan Park , located on the Aji peninsula.

This park is known for its unique blend of art and nature, featuring stone sculptures that harmonize with the surrounding landscape. As we strolled through the park, we were treated to panoramic views of the Seto Inland Sea. The fresh sea breeze and the stunning scenery were incredibly refreshing. Elena loved running around the open spaces, discovering hidden sculptures and climbing on the playful art installations. The park's concept, a park for playing with art, truly came to life as we interacted with the various sculptures and enjoyed the natural beauty of the area. I was particularly drawn to the observatory, designed by Dutch artist John Körmeling, which offered a unique perspective of the surrounding islands. It was the perfect spot to reflect on our journey and appreciate the beauty of Shikoku one last time.

Culinary Farewells

For lunch, we enjoyed a delightful meal at Tosa Rokkon , savoring the authentic flavors of Kochi cuisine.

I tried their signature dish, the charcoal-flamed skipjack tuna, while Maximilian opted for the dynamic sashimi platter. Elena enjoyed a simple yet delicious bowl of rice with grilled fish. The restaurant's warm and welcoming ambiance made it the perfect place to relax and enjoy our final meal in Kochi. In the evening, we had a cozy dinner at Osusowake Shokudo Mado , a charming eatery known for its home-style Japanese cooking.

The name Osusowake means to share something with others, which perfectly reflects the restaurant's philosophy. The owner, Ms. Chimi Suyama, uses fresh, local ingredients to create comforting and flavorful dishes that truly capture the essence of Japanese home cooking. It felt like we were dining in someone's home, surrounded by warmth and hospitality. I was touched by the generosity and kindness of the staff, who made us feel like part of their family. It was the perfect way to end our culinary journey through Shikoku.

Reflections and Gratitude

As I sit here tonight, writing this blog post, I am filled with a mix of emotions. I am sad to be leaving Shikoku, but also incredibly grateful for the experiences we've had. This island has exceeded all my expectations, offering a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and warm hospitality. I am so glad that we chose to explore this less-traveled corner of Japan, discovering its hidden gems and creating lasting memories as a family. I've learned a lot about the island's history, culture, and cuisine, and I'm excited to share these insights with my readers. I hope that my blog posts have inspired you to consider visiting Shikoku and experiencing its magic for yourself. And I'm also grateful that I was able to use my Japanese phrasebook, even if it was just to say Konnichiwa and Arigato.

Tomorrow, we will be heading to the airport, filled with memories of our Shikoku adventure. Although our trip has come to an end, the memories and experiences will stay with us forever. Shikoku has captured a piece of my heart, and I know that I will be back someday to explore more of its hidden treasures.

Saying goodbye to Shikoku is bittersweet, but I'm already looking forward to our next adventure. Where will our travels take us next? Stay tuned to find out! For now, it's time to say *sayōnara* to Shikoku and cherish the memories we've made on this beautiful island.
