Echoes of the Past, Tastes of the Present

Today in Con Dao was a poignant blend of historical reflection and simple pleasures, a day where we connected deeply with the island's past while savoring its present-day beauty. It’s a delicate balance, acknowledging the heavy history while still embracing the tranquility and charm that Con Dao offers today.

Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Infinity Cafe & Restaurant. This place is a gem! The chic and trendy decor, combined with a cool playlist, created a relaxing vibe. We enjoyed delicious pizzas, pasta, and some crispy chicken that Elena adored. Maximilian particularly enjoyed his coffee, remarking on its strong, rich flavor, a perfect start to a day of exploration. It's amazing how a good meal and a relaxed atmosphere can set the tone for the day.

Fueled and ready, we headed to Di tích Bãi Sọ Người, or the “Relic of the Skull Ground”. This site is a stark reminder of the brutal history of Con Dao, a place where French colonists committed unspeakable atrocities against prisoners. Walking through this area, now respectfully restored, was a deeply moving experience. It’s hard to describe the feeling of standing on ground that holds so much pain and suffering. We took a moment of silence to honor those who lost their lives, reflecting on their courage and resilience. Elena, though young, seemed to grasp the gravity of the place, asking thoughtful questions about the people who were there.

Visiting the Bãi Sọ Người was a somber reminder of the past, urging us to remember the sacrifices made and to cherish the peace we have today.

From there, we sought a change of pace with a visit to the Island Chief Palace. Also known as the Lord’s House, this historical site offered a glimpse into the life of the island's administrators during the colonial era. The palace, surrounded by a lush garden, stood in stark contrast to the harsh conditions endured by the prisoners. Elena was fascinated by the furniture and the layout of the house, imagining what life would have been like for the people who lived there. Maximilian appreciated the architecture and the well-preserved state of the building, noting its historical significance. The palace provided a different perspective on Con Dao's history, showing the contrast between the rulers and the ruled.

Lunch was at Nhà hàng Phố Biển, a local seafood restaurant. We savored the fresh flavors of the sea, enjoying grilled fish, shrimp, and some delicious spring rolls. Elena, always a fan of seafood, devoured her meal with gusto. Maximilian and I appreciated the authentic Vietnamese flavors and the friendly service. It was a perfect spot to relax and recharge after a morning of historical exploration.

After lunch, we decided to indulge in some souvenir shopping at Siêu thị đặc sản, quà lưu niệm côn đảo Hương Biển. I wanted to find some local crafts and treats to bring back home to Bielefeld. The store had a wide variety of local products, from dried seafood to handcrafted souvenirs. I picked up some mứt hạt bàng (cured almond seeds), a Con Dao specialty, and some local tea. Elena chose a cute little Pulo Bear keychain, a local souvenir. It was fun browsing through the different items and supporting the local economy.

As the day drew to a close, we had dinner at Nhà hàng Poulo Condore. The restaurant, known for its serene ambiance and delicious Vietnamese cuisine, was the perfect place to unwind. I opted for the fresh spring rolls, while Maximilian chose a seafood hotpot. Elena enjoyed a simple but tasty noodle dish. The gentle sea breeze and the sound of the waves created a tranquil atmosphere, making it a memorable dining experience.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Côn Đảo Museum and the Phú Tường prison camp (Chuồng Cọp Pháp). It will be another day of delving into the island's history, but I am also hoping we can find some time to relax and enjoy the beautiful beaches. Perhaps we’ll stop by the Hide & Find Bar Côn Đảo for a drink in the evening – Maximilian deserves a good cocktail after all this historical immersion!

Today was a powerful reminder of the importance of remembering the past, honoring those who came before us, and appreciating the present. Con Dao has a way of touching your soul, leaving you with a deeper understanding of history and a greater appreciation for life. As we reflect on the day, I am grateful for the opportunity to share this experience with my family, creating lasting memories and deepening our connection to this special place. The blend of historical sites and tranquil moments made for a day that was both educational and emotionally fulfilling. I am excited to see what tomorrow brings, knowing that Con Dao will continue to surprise and inspire us.

As I sit here, writing in our cozy eco-lodge, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude. It’s these moments, shared with my family, that make all the difference. Even though the history of Con Dao is heavy, the island's beauty and the warmth of its people shine through, offering a sense of hope and renewal. It’s a place where you can learn, reflect, and connect, all while surrounded by stunning natural beauty. And as a travel blogger, I am honored to share these experiences with you, hoping to inspire your own journeys of discovery and reflection.
