Today was a beautiful immersion into the heart of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, a region that continues to surprise and enchant me with its hidden gems. With Maximilian and Elena by my side, we set out to explore Gemona and Fagagna, two places that promised a blend of history, culture, and culinary delights. It's moments like these that remind me why I started this blog – to share the joy of discovering new places and connecting with the local spirit.

Our day began in Gemona, a town that has risen from the ashes of the devastating 1976 earthquake with remarkable resilience. As someone who deeply appreciates historical narratives, I was particularly drawn to Gemona Castle. Rising early, we enjoyed a delightful breakfast at Ristorante Centopassi. The reviews I had read mentioned their exceptional seafood, but since it was breakfast, we opted for a selection of pastries and coffee. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, setting a perfect tone for the day.

After breakfast, we made our way to Gemona Castle. The climb up to the castle was invigorating, with Elena skipping ahead, eager to explore. The castle, with its Celtic and Lombard origins, stands proudly, offering panoramic views of the valley. As we walked through the ruins, I imagined the lives of those who once defended this strategic point. Maximilian, with his keen interest in history, shared details about the castle's role in guarding the Via Julia Claudia in Roman times. Elena, ever curious, peppered us with questions about knights and battles, her imagination running wild.

The views from the top were indeed worth the climb. The surrounding landscape, with its rolling hills and distant mountains, was breathtaking. It was a perfect moment to pause and reflect on the rich history that permeated the air. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and gratitude for the opportunity to experience such a place with my family.

After soaking in the history and scenery of Gemona, we drove to Fagagna, a Borgo d'Italia, known for its picturesque charm and commitment to preserving its cultural heritage. The drive itself was a treat, with winding roads offering glimpses of the stunning Friulian countryside. As we approached Fagagna, I could see why it was considered one of Italy's most beautiful villages.

Our first stop in Fagagna was Ristorante San Michele for lunch. The restaurant is nestled among the ruins of Fagagna's castle, offering stunning views of the Friulian plain. We sat on the terrace, enjoying the warm June sun and the gentle breeze. The food was exquisite, with a focus on local ingredients and traditional recipes. I savored the frico, a traditional Friulian dish made of cheese and potatoes, while Maximilian enjoyed a hearty pasta dish. Elena, always a fan of simple flavors, devoured her gnocchi with tomato sauce.

The shop was a treasure trove of local crafts, from handmade jewelry to artisanal soaps. I ended up buying a beautiful hand-painted ceramic bowl and a set of locally made olive oil. It felt good to support the local artisans and take a piece of Friuli home with me.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Al Boschetto for dinner. This restaurant promised a cozy atmosphere and traditional Friulian cuisine. We were not disappointed. The restaurant was warm and inviting, with a rustic charm that made us feel right at home. We shared a selection of local specialties, including cjarsons, a traditional Friulian pasta dish filled with herbs and spices, and gubana, a sweet cake filled with nuts and dried fruit. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

Reflecting on the day, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this beautiful region with my family. Friuli-Venezia Giulia continues to surprise me with its rich history, stunning landscapes, and delicious cuisine. It's a place that truly nourishes the soul, and I am excited to see what tomorrow brings. Tomorrow, we plan to visit Castello Savorgnan di Brazzà and Cascate Butines. I'm particularly excited about the waterfalls, as Elena loves nature and I think it will be a great way to end our time here.

As we drove back to our guesthouse, Elena fell asleep in the back seat, her face flushed with the day's adventures. Maximilian and I exchanged a knowing glance, both of us feeling a deep sense of contentment. These are the moments that make travel so rewarding – the shared experiences, the discoveries, and the memories that will last a lifetime. It's not just about seeing new places; it's about connecting with the local culture, supporting local businesses, and creating meaningful experiences with the ones you love. And as I drift off to sleep tonight, I am already dreaming of tomorrow's adventures in this enchanting corner of Italy.

One thing I did forget to pack, though, was Elena's favorite stuffed animal. I hope she doesn't notice it too much tomorrow! And of course, the Italian adapter. I’ll need to remember to buy one tomorrow, or else my electronics will be out of commission.
