From Sacred Peaks to Ancient Walls

Today was a day of contrasts, a journey that took us from the serene heights of a mountain sanctuary to the imposing depths of a historic castle. It's days like these that remind me why I love to travel – the chance to immerse myself in different worlds, to feel the pulse of history, and to create memories with my family that will last a lifetime. Friuli-Venezia Giulia continues to surprise and delight us at every turn, and I'm excited to share our experiences with you.

Our day began with an early start as we set off for the Sanctuary of Monte Lussari. The drive itself was stunning, with winding roads that offered breathtaking views of the Julian Alps. As we climbed higher, the air grew crisper, and the landscape transformed into a tapestry of lush greenery and towering peaks. Elena was particularly excited, her little face pressed against the car window as she chattered about the cows and sheep we passed along the way. Maximilian, ever the pragmatist, checked the map, ensuring we were on the right track, though I suspect he was secretly enjoying the scenery as much as we were. The last few days of our trip are upon us, and I am trying to soak it all in.

We opted for the cable car to ascend the mountain, a decision that proved to be a wise one. The ride was smooth and swift, offering panoramic views that stretched as far as the eye could see. From our vantage point, the world seemed to shrink below us, and I felt a sense of peace wash over me. Elena, initially a bit nervous, soon became captivated by the sensation of floating above the trees. By the time we reached the summit, she was giggling with delight. I think she might be getting the hang of this travel thing.

The Sanctuary of Monte Lussari is a truly special place. Perched atop the mountain, it feels like a haven of tranquility, a place where one can escape the hustle and bustle of modern life and connect with something greater. The sanctuary has a rich history, dating back to the 14th century, and has long been a destination for pilgrims from Italy, Slovenia, and Germany. As we explored the church, I couldn't help but feel a sense of reverence, a connection to the countless souls who have sought solace here over the centuries. The architecture was beautiful, and the ornate interiors and frescoes were a testament to the craftsmanship of the past.

Visiting Monte Lussari is more than just a trip; it's a journey that nourishes the soul and connects you to the heart of Friuli.

After visiting the church, we wandered through the quaint hamlet that surrounds it. The village was charming, with traditional wooden houses, cozy cafes, and souvenir shops. We stopped for a light lunch at one of the restaurants, where I savored local cheese ravioli with an Aperol spritz. Elena enjoyed a plate of pasta, while Maximilian opted for a hearty sandwich. As we ate, we took in the breathtaking views of the Cacciatore mountains, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such beauty with our family. I made a mental note to find a similar ravioli recipe when we returned to Bielefeld – a little taste of Friuli to brighten our days back home.

Leaving Monte Lussari, we drove towards Udine, eager to explore the city's historic castle. Udine Castle stands proudly atop a hill in the heart of the city, offering commanding views of the surrounding landscape. The castle has a long and storied history, dating back to the Roman Empire, and has served as a seat of power for various rulers over the centuries. As we approached the castle, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe, a connection to the past.

We parked the car at the base of the hill and began the climb to the castle. The path was steep and winding, but the effort was well worth it. As we ascended, we passed through ancient walls and fortifications, imagining what it must have been like to defend this strategic stronghold against invaders. Elena, always full of energy, skipped ahead, eager to reach the top. Maximilian and I followed at a more leisurely pace, taking in the sights and sounds of the city below.

Arriving at the castle, we were immediately struck by its imposing presence. The architecture was impressive, a blend of medieval and Renaissance styles that reflected the castle's long and varied history. We explored the various rooms and halls, marveling at the intricate details and the artifacts on display. Elena was particularly fascinated by the armor and weapons, pretending to be a knight defending the castle from attack. Maximilian, ever the history buff, read every plaque and sign, eager to learn more about the castle's past. I found myself drawn to the art gallery, where I admired the works of local artists.

The Udine Castle, symbol of Friuli, became a museum on July 26, 1906. The need to proceed with the partial reconstruction of the Castle soon turned into a total renovation project entrusted to the architect Giovanni Fontana. The works continued briskly, with the employment of 500 workers. The foundation stone was laid on April 2, 1517.

After our exploration of the castle, we strolled through the charming streets of Udine, soaking in the city's vibrant atmosphere. We admired the elegant architecture, the bustling piazzas, and the friendly locals. We stopped for a gelato, savoring the cool, creamy treat as we watched the world go by. Elena, of course, chose a bright pink flavor, while Maximilian and I opted for more traditional choices.

For dinner, we decided to stay in San Daniele del Friuli, known for its famous prosciutto. We had a delightful meal at Trattoria Al Teatro, a cozy restaurant that came highly recommended. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the staff were friendly and attentive. I savored the tagliatelle Ai Porcini, while Maximilian enjoyed gnocchi Con Ragù. Elena, surprisingly, devoured a plate of prosciutto, declaring it her favorite food of the trip. The restaurant is located near the “G. Da Udine” Theatre, and is run by Rosa Paolini, a well-known restaurateur.

Before dinner, we stopped at Liberty 1894 for a drink. It's a cozy and elegant bar that offers great cocktails. According to what I read, Max, the owner and cocktail maker, puts his heart into every drink. I enjoyed a glass of local wine, while Maximilian tried one of the bar's signature cocktails. Elena, of course, had a juice box.

As the day drew to a close, we reflected on our experiences, feeling grateful for the opportunity to explore this beautiful region of Italy with our family. Friuli-Venezia Giulia has captured our hearts, and we know that we will cherish these memories for years to come.

Tomorrow is our last day in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, and we plan to make the most of it. Our itinerary includes a visit to the Muggia Vecchia Archaeological Park and the stunning Pozze Smeraldine. We'll also be sure to indulge in some local delicacies before heading back to Venice for our flight home. I also want to visit the shop 'sapone artigianale friuli venezia giulia/I Profumi del Bosco' to buy some souvenirs.

“The journey, not the arrival, matters;” or so said T.S. Eliot. I am not sure if I agree with him, but I do know that I am very happy I took this journey.

Until tomorrow,
