A Day Above and Beyond

Today was an adventure that truly took us to new heights, both literally and figuratively. Leaving the familiar embrace of Lucca, Maximilian and I ventured into the surrounding areas, eager to explore bridges that promised both breathtaking views and fascinating stories. It was a day filled with delightful discoveries and memorable moments.

Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Ristorante Giglio. The reviews I had read raved about their tasting menu and the beautiful outdoor seating in the square. We decided to try it, and it was indeed a top-notch experience. The service was attentive, and the food was a culinary adventure. I especially enjoyed the veal, and Maximilian was quite taken with the extensive wine list. It was the perfect start to a day of exploration. As we savored our cappuccinos, we discussed our plans for the day, excitement bubbling in our voices.

Fueled and ready, we set off towards our first destination: the Ponte Sospeso di San Marcello Pistoiese. The drive itself was stunning, with winding roads offering panoramic views of the Tuscan hills. As we approached the bridge, I couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation. I am not usually afraid of heights, but this bridge looked like it would test my resolve.

The Ponte Sospeso, or Suspension Bridge, is an incredible feat of engineering. Built in 1923, it was once the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in the world. Originally, it served as a crucial link for workers, connecting Popiglio with the factory in Mammiano Basso. Now, it stands as a thrilling tourist attraction. As we stepped onto the narrow walkway, which is only 80 cm wide, I felt a mix of excitement and slight trepidation.

The bridge swayed gently with each step, and the views were simply breathtaking. Suspended 36 meters above the Lima River, we were surrounded by lush greenery and rolling mountains. I paused midway, closed my eyes, and took a deep breath, savoring the moment. Maximilian, ever the tech enthusiast, was busy capturing photos and videos with his camera, documenting every angle of the stunning vista. He even tried flying his drone, but the wind was too strong. I am glad he didn’t risk losing it in the valley.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are those that challenge us to step outside our comfort zones and embrace the beauty of the world from a different perspective.

After conquering the Ponte Sospeso, we drove towards our next destination: the Devil's Bridge, or Ponte della Maddalena. Located near the town of Borgo a Mozzano, this bridge is shrouded in legend and mystery. The drive to the bridge was as enchanting as the destination itself, with the road winding through picturesque Tuscan countryside. We passed vineyards and olive groves, the quintessential Italian landscape unfolding before our eyes.

As we approached the Devil's Bridge, its unique architecture immediately captured my attention. The bridge's asymmetrical arches and slimming profile create a striking image against the backdrop of the Serchio River. The bridge dates back to the era of Countess Matilde di Canossa (1046–1115), with reconstruction in the early 14th century by Castruccio Castracani. The bridge connects the two banks of the river Serchio at the height of Borgo a Mozzano. Its classic medieval design, with its high, 'donkey back' arches, is a frequent sight in Tuscany, but here it gains a unique character due to its asymmetry.

The legend of the Devil's Bridge is as captivating as its appearance. It is said that the master mason, unable to complete the bridge in time, sought help from the Devil. The Devil agreed to finish the bridge in one night in exchange for the soul of the first to cross it. However, the mason, filled with remorse, confessed to a religious figure who advised him to send a pig across the bridge first, thus cheating the Devil. It’s a fascinating tale that adds an extra layer of intrigue to this already remarkable structure.

We strolled across the bridge, imagining the countless footsteps that had crossed it over the centuries. I could almost feel the weight of the legends and the echoes of the past. The views of the Serchio River were stunning, and the surrounding landscape was a perfect blend of nature and history. Maximilian and I took our time, soaking in the atmosphere and marveling at the bridge's unique design.

By this point, our stomachs were beginning to rumble, reminding us that it was time for lunch. We headed to Osteria Del Neni in Lucca, a restaurant recommended for its authentic Tuscan cuisine. Tucked away in a quiet, cozy alley, the osteria exuded a warm and inviting atmosphere. The staff was friendly and welcoming, and the menu was filled with traditional dishes.

We started with the beef, followed by the braised rabbit, both of which were cooked to perfection. For dessert, we shared a delicious tiramisu, which was the perfect ending to a satisfying meal. The house wine was also excellent, complementing the flavors of the food. As we ate, we chatted about our adventures of the day, reliving each moment and savoring the memories we were creating.

With our appetites sated, we decided to indulge in a little souvenir shopping. We visited Ricordissimi Souvenir Lucca, a charming store in the heart of the city. The store was filled with unique keepsakes and local crafts, each telling a story of Italian heritage. I picked up a beautiful hand-painted ceramic plate, while Maximilian chose a leather-bound journal. It was a delightful way to bring a piece of Lucca home with us.
