A Day of Discovery in Lucca

Today in Lucca was nothing short of magical. It was a day where history whispered from ancient walls, art spoke volumes in quiet galleries, and the flavors of Tuscany danced on my palate. Maximilian and I set out to explore some of Lucca’s most cherished landmarks, and every moment felt like stepping into a postcard.

Our morning began with a delightful breakfast at Soup in Town Piazza San Giusto 6. The name itself is unassuming, but the experience was anything but. Tucked away on the lovely San Giusto square, this charming spot offered a vegetarian haven. As someone who appreciates fresh, healthy options, I was thrilled. Maximilian, ever the adventurous eater, was equally intrigued. I savored a bowl of their hearty broth, while Maximilian opted for a veggie burger. The ambiance was cozy, with a touch of artistic flair. I made a mental note to try to recreate the soup when we return to Bielefeld. It was the perfect start to a day of exploration.

“The beauty of Lucca lies not just in its landmarks, but in the way it invites you to slow down and savor every moment.”

Next on our itinerary was the Museo Nazionale di Villa Guinigi. As we approached, the villa's architecture immediately captivated us. Built in 1413 by the Lord of Lucca, Paolo Guinigi, the villa itself is a masterpiece. The airy loggia and mullioned windows are stunning. Inside, the museum unfolded like a storybook of Lucca’s past. The artifacts were meticulously arranged, each telling a tale of the city’s rich history. From Etruscan remains to Roman relics and Renaissance art, the collection spanned centuries. I was particularly drawn to the religious art from the 13th century. Maximilian, with his keen interest in history, was fascinated by the Etruscan and Roman artifacts. We spent a good two hours wandering through the halls, soaking in the art and history.

Leaving the museum, we strolled through Lucca’s charming streets, making our way to the Clock Tower. The Torre delle Ore, as it’s also known, stands tall on Via Fillungo, beckoning visitors to climb its ancient steps. Built in the 14th century, it’s the tallest tower in Lucca, and I was excited to see the panoramic views from the top. The climb was a bit strenuous, with 207 wooden steps winding upwards. I paused a few times to catch my breath, but the anticipation of the view kept me going. Maximilian, of course, bounded up the stairs with ease, pausing to offer me encouraging smiles.

Reaching the top, we were rewarded with a breathtaking vista. The Renaissance walls of Lucca stretched out before us, encircling the city like a protective embrace. The narrow streets and red rooftops created a tapestry of color, while the Tuscan countryside provided a stunning backdrop. We could see the Guinigi Tower with its rooftop trees and the Cattedrale di San Martino. I could have stayed there for hours, simply drinking in the beauty of Lucca from above. It was worth every step!

After descending the tower, our stomachs began to rumble, signaling lunchtime. We headed to Ristorante Per 21, a place recommended for its seafood. This restaurant is known for its innovative Italian cuisine. We started with the sea bass and octopus. The presentation was as exquisite as the taste, a true testament to the chef's skill. For our main courses, Maximilian chose the lobster pasta, while I savored the perfectly grilled fish. Each dish was a celebration of flavor, showcasing the freshest local ingredients. The service was impeccable, making us feel like honored guests.

As the afternoon waned, we sought a relaxing spot to unwind. Enoteca Vanni, a wine bar, was just what we needed. Nestled in Piazza del Salvatore, this enoteca exuded old-world charm. Dark wood shelves lined the walls, showcasing an impressive collection of Italian wines. We decided to indulge in a wine tasting, sampling a few local Tuscan varieties. The sommelier was knowledgeable and passionate, guiding us through the nuances of each wine. Maximilian, ever the wine aficionado, was in his element, asking questions and savoring every sip. I enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere, sipping on a glass of crisp white wine and soaking in the ambiance.

For dinner, we chose Ristorante Botton d'Oro, enticed by its reputation for authentic Northern Italian cuisine. From the moment we stepped inside, we were enveloped in a warm, inviting atmosphere. The staff was attentive and friendly, making us feel right at home. We started with the antipasto, a delightful assortment of local cheeses and cured meats. For our main courses, Maximilian opted for the monkfish, while I chose the pasta. Each dish was cooked to perfection, bursting with flavor. To finish, we shared a tiramisu, a classic Italian dessert that was the perfect ending to a perfect meal.

As we strolled back to Albergo San Martino, hand in hand, I reflected on the day. Lucca had truly captured my heart. From the art and history to the delicious food and wine, every moment had been a delight. I felt a deep connection to this charming city, a sense of belonging that I hadn’t expected. It was a day I would cherish forever.

Tomorrow, we plan to venture a bit further afield, visiting Palazzo Mediceo Seravezza and Villa Reale di Marlia. I am excited to see what new adventures await! We will also try out La Norma for breakfast, Ristorante Mecenate for lunch, and Osteria Baralla for dinner. Before dinner we will do some shopping at Fat Mama Vintage.

“Travel is not about the destination, but the memories we create along the way.”

And as a final note, I am glad I remembered to pack my light jacket, as the evenings have a slight chill. I do wish I had remembered my umbrella, though! The weather can be unpredictable, and a sudden shower would have been less of a surprise had I been prepared.
