A Day of Trails and Ancient Echoes

Today was a day of exploration and connection, a beautiful reminder of why I embarked on this solo journey to Serra de São Mamede Natural Park. It was about embracing the quiet moments, discovering hidden gems, and feeling a deep sense of gratitude for the simple beauty around me. The kind of day that makes you feel truly alive.

The morning started with a delightful breakfast at Olha a Tosta in Nisa. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the promise of a traditional Portuguese toast filled the air. I opted for the Tosta Portuguesa, a hearty combination of pork loin, chourição, olives, onions, tomatoes, and cheese, all drizzled with olive oil. It was the perfect fuel for the day’s adventures. Sipping my coffee, I watched the town slowly come to life, locals greeting each other, and the sounds of a new day unfolding. It felt wonderful to be part of this unhurried rhythm, a world away from the frenetic pace of Bielefeld. I made a mental note to try to bring some of this 'slow living' back home with me.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off for the Trilho da Barca d'Amieira - Passadiços de Nisa. The trail promised a scenic walk along the Tagus River, and it did not disappoint. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. As I started my hike, the trail wound its way through a landscape painted in autumnal hues. The leaves were turning golden and russet, creating a breathtaking contrast against the clear blue sky. The Passadiços, or wooden walkways, were well-maintained and made the hike accessible, and I was thankful for that.

The trail was mostly flat, making it a leisurely stroll, and I found myself lost in thought as I walked. I reflected on my life back in Germany, my work as a marketing consultant, and my wonderful family – Max, my ever-supportive husband, and Elena, our bright and bubbly six-year-old. I missed them dearly, of course, but I knew this solo retreat was essential for me to recharge and reconnect with myself. It's so easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of daily life, forgetting to take a step back and appreciate the simple things.

Sometimes, the greatest discoveries are not grand monuments, but the quiet corners of the world that resonate with your soul.

One of the highlights of the Trilho da Barca d'Amieira was the Ponte Pedonal Suspensa, a suspended pedestrian bridge. Crossing it was a bit of an adrenaline rush, as the bridge swayed gently with each step. The views from the middle of the bridge were simply stunning – the Tagus River stretching out before me, flanked by rolling hills and verdant forests. I paused there for a long time, soaking in the beauty and feeling an overwhelming sense of peace. It was a moment I knew I would cherish long after this trip was over.

Continuing along the trail, I reached the Miradouro da Casa de Árvore, a viewpoint offering panoramic views of the Foz do Rio Ocreza. The sight was truly magnificent, and I spent some time there, capturing the scenery with my camera. Photography has always been a passion of mine, a way to preserve memories and share the beauty I encounter with others. I imagined showing these photos to Elena, telling her stories of my adventures in Portugal and inspiring her to explore the world someday.

After a satisfying morning of hiking, it was time for lunch. I headed to A Tasquinha, a local restaurant known for its traditional Portuguese cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a rustic charm that made me feel right at home. I ordered the Carne de Porco à Alentejana, a classic dish of pork and clams, and it was absolutely divine. The flavors were rich and savory, a testament to the region's culinary heritage. As I savored each bite, I couldn't help but think of my abuela back in Cholula, Mexico, and her incredible cooking. Food has always been such an important part of my culture, a way to connect with family and tradition.

In the afternoon, I decided to explore the Caleiras da Escusa / Fornos de Cal da Escusa, ancient lime kilns located near the village of Escusa. These kilns, dating back to Roman times, were once used to produce lime from the local limestone. As I wandered through the site, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the history that surrounded me. These structures, now weathered and worn, stood as silent witnesses to centuries of human activity. It was fascinating to imagine the lives of the people who once worked here, their struggles and triumphs, their connection to the land.

The Caleiras da Escusa are classified as a National Monument, a testament to their historical and cultural significance. The sheer number of kilns, nineteen in total, is remarkable, and their architectural features are well-preserved. Walking around, I found myself pondering the ingenuity of the Romans, their ability to harness the natural resources of the land and create structures that have stood the test of time. It was a humbling experience, a reminder of the enduring power of human innovation.

Before heading back to Nisa, I stopped by the Natural Bar for a refreshing drink. It was a small, unassuming place, but it had a welcoming atmosphere. I ordered a local beer and sat outside, watching the world go by. The sun was beginning to set, casting a warm golden glow over the landscape. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day. I chatted briefly with the bartender, learning a few new Portuguese phrases and sharing stories about my travels. These small interactions are what make traveling so rewarding, the opportunity to connect with people from different backgrounds and cultures.

As I reflect on today’s experiences, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this beautiful region of Portugal. The Serra de São Mamede Natural Park has exceeded all my expectations, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and peaceful tranquility. I am excited about tomorrow’s itinerary, which includes a visit to the Portas do Ródão Natural Monument and the Parque megalítico dos Coureleiros. I am particularly looking forward to seeing the impressive rock formations at Portas do Ródão, a natural gateway carved by the Tagus River.

Before drifting off to sleep, I journaled about the day, capturing the essence of each experience and the emotions they evoked. Writing has always been a therapeutic outlet for me, a way to process my thoughts and feelings and preserve the memories of my travels. As I closed my journal, I felt a sense of contentment and anticipation for the adventures that lie ahead.

Tomorrow promises more discoveries, more connections, and more moments of pure joy. Until then, goodnight from Nisa!
