Echoes of the Ancients

Today was a day of delving deep into the history and natural beauty of this region, a journey that resonated with my soul. It's amazing how these ancient stones and dramatic landscapes can whisper stories of times long past, inviting you to listen closely. Leaving the familiar behind, I set out to discover what secrets Serra de São Mamede held, and it turned out to be a day filled with awe and reflection.

My morning began with a hearty breakfast at Café Restaurante Tapada do Poêjo. I fueled up with a traditional Portuguese breakfast, including a strong café and a delicious *queijada*. It was the perfect start to a day that promised a blend of history and nature's grandeur. With a full stomach and an adventurous spirit, I set off to explore the Portas do Ródão Natural Monument.

The drive to Portas do Ródão was stunning. The landscape transformed into a dramatic display of rocky hills and expansive valleys. When I arrived, I was immediately struck by the sheer scale of the natural monument. The Tagus River carves its way through two enormous quartz cliffs, creating a breathtaking gateway. I spent a good hour simply taking in the view, feeling dwarfed by the power and beauty of nature. I learned that the gorge was formed over millions of years by the relentless force of the river. It's hard to believe that something so immense could be shaped by something as fluid as water. The cliffs are also home to a large colony of griffon vultures, and I watched in awe as they soared effortlessly through the sky.

I decided to take a boat trip along the Tagus River to get a different perspective of the Portas do Ródão. Being on the water, looking up at those towering cliffs, was an entirely different experience. The guide shared stories about the local flora and fauna, and pointed out various geological formations. I learned that the area is also a haven for birdwatchers, with over 116 species of birds to be observed. As someone who appreciates nature, I found this particularly fascinating. I made a mental note to bring my binoculars next time!

The stones may be silent, but their presence speaks volumes about the lives and beliefs of those who came before us.

After the boat trip, I grabbed lunch at Restaurante O Cantinho do Pica-Pau in Portalegre. I opted for a simple *frango assado* (roast chicken) with a fresh salad. It was a comforting and satisfying meal that gave me the energy I needed for the afternoon's adventure.

With renewed vigor, I drove to Parque Megalítico dos Coureleiros, near Castelo de Vide. This megalithic park is a collection of menhirs dating back to the 4th and 3rd millennia BC. As I wandered through the park, I felt a profound connection to the past. These ancient stones, erected by people so long ago, stood as silent witnesses to the passage of time. I tried to imagine what life was like for those who built these monuments. What rituals did they perform here? What did they believe? It was humbling to realize how much history this land holds.

The park is divided into several groups of menhirs, each with its own unique characteristics. Anta 1, though somewhat eroded, still displays three of the original seven granites that formed the burial chamber. Anta 2, also known as Anta Grande dos Coureleiros, is one of the largest megalithic monuments in the area, with seven standing stones still visible. Anta 3, believed to have been built during the Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods, is mostly destroyed today. Finally, Anta 4 features a polygonal floor and three remaining pillars.

Before heading back, I made a stop at the Castle of Marvão. Although primarily there for shopping, I was captivated by the castle's imposing presence. Perched atop the highest peak of the Serra de São Mamede, it offered unparalleled views of the surrounding landscape. I explored the castle walls, peeking into souvenir shops and enjoying the atmosphere of this historic site. I picked up some local crafts and gourmet products, including a bag of homemade cookies from Marvão Com Gosto.

As the day drew to a close, I headed to Taberna Facha for dinner. This quaint tavern is known for its traditional Portuguese *petiscos*, and I was eager to try some local specialties. I ordered the *asparagus omelet* and the *chicken with chestnuts*, both of which were absolutely delicious. The friendly service and cozy atmosphere made it the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much I had experienced. From the dramatic landscapes of Portas do Ródão to the ancient mysteries of Parque Megalítico dos Coureleiros, this region is a treasure trove of history and natural beauty. It's a reminder that even when traveling solo, you're never truly alone when you're surrounded by such rich heritage.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Sinagoga de Castelo de Vide and Alto da Serra de São Mamede, hoping to uncover more hidden gems in this beautiful natural park. I'm also looking forward to trying out some local bars, like O Castelo - Café Lounge.

As I settle in for the night, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience these wonders. It's days like these that remind me why I love to travel, to explore, and to connect with the world around me.

And as José Saramago once said:

From Marvão one can see the entire land… It is understandable that from this place, high up in the keep at Marvão Castle, visitors may respectfully murmur, 'How great is the world'.
