Day 6: Heights and Boardwalk Delights

Today was all about embracing the simple joys of life: soaring through the air with breathtaking views and taking a leisurely stroll through nature's tranquil pathways. It’s amazing how a change of scenery can completely refresh the spirit, and Serra de São Mamede certainly provided that today. From atop a hill with a swing to a relaxing ecological park, today was full of simple pleasures.

My day began, as most have on this trip, with a delightful breakfast at Cavalinho. The strong coffee and fresh bread gave me the energy I needed for the day’s adventures. With a full stomach and a sense of excitement, I set off to find the famed Baloiço da Torre de Barrozinha.

Finding the Swing of Things

The drive to Baloiço da Torre de Barrozinha was an adventure in itself. The roads wound through the hills, each turn revealing more stunning views of the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park. As I got closer, the anticipation grew. I’d seen pictures of the swing, perched high on a hill, but nothing could have prepared me for the real thing. The last stretch of the journey required a bit of a walk, which only added to the sense of discovery.

And then, there it was! The Baloiço da Torre de Barrozinha, a charming, rustic swing set atop the hill, overlooking a vast panorama of rolling hills and open sky. It was built in 2020 by a local firefighter. I couldn’t resist hopping on for a ride. As I swung back and forth, the wind in my hair, I felt an incredible sense of freedom. The views were simply stunning; the landscape stretched out before me in all its glory. For a moment, all my worries seemed to melt away as I enjoyed the simple pleasure of swinging in such a beautiful location.

After a good swing, I took some time to simply sit and soak in the scenery. The peace and quiet were a welcome contrast to the hustle and bustle of Bielefeld. I thought about Maximilian and Elena, imagining how much they would have loved this place. I made a mental note to bring them back someday. Maybe we could even make it a family tradition!

Next on the agenda was Passadiços do Gameiro, a boardwalk trail through the Gameiro Ecological Park. After the exhilaration of the swing, I was ready for a more relaxed activity. I drove to the park, enjoying the scenic route along the way. When I arrived, I was immediately struck by the park's tranquility. It was the perfect place for a leisurely afternoon stroll.

I noticed families enjoying picnics by the river, children playing in the park, and couples taking romantic walks along the boardwalk. It was heartening to see so many people connecting with nature and enjoying the simple pleasures of life.

Lunch and Local Finds

By lunchtime, I had worked up quite an appetite. I headed to Sal e Alho for a bite to eat. This quaint, typical Portuguese restaurant was just what I needed. Despite some language barriers, the staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating. The open kitchen concept added to the restaurant's unique flair, and the food was simply delicious. I savored every bite, feeling grateful for the warm hospitality and the authentic flavors of the Alentejo region.

It’s always nice to support local artisans and share a taste of Portugal with my friends and family.

I opted for a hearty seafood stew, which was rich in flavor and incredibly satisfying. As I ate, I reflected on the day’s adventures.
