Echoes of the Past, Heights of the Present

Today, I ventured deeper into the heart of Alentejo, a region that continues to surprise me with its blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. It was a day of exploration that touched both the soul and the spirit, reaffirming why I chose this solo journey in the first place. I set out to uncover more of the park's hidden gems, and today was nothing short of spectacular.

My day began with a delightful breakfast at Sabores Do Norte Alentejo. Energized, I drove to Castelo de Vide, a charming town that beckoned with its historical allure. My primary destination was the Sinagoga de Castelo de Vide. Nestled in the old Jewish quarter, this medieval synagogue is one of Portugal's best-preserved. As I approached, the quaint streets whispered stories of a vibrant community that once thrived within these walls.

Stepping inside the Sinagoga de Castelo de Vide felt like stepping back in time. The building, which dates back to the 14th century, has been meticulously maintained, and now serves as a museum dedicated to the history of the local Jewish community. The architecture is simple yet evocative, with its pointed arches and stone walls that have stood the test of time. I learned about the community's customs, traditions, and the challenges they faced through informative displays. It was a poignant reminder of Portugal's diverse cultural tapestry.

The synagogue is located at the intersection of Rua da Judiaria and Rua da Fonte, oriented east to west. Although there is no certainty as to its exact date, it's assumed to date back to when the Jewish quarter was established in the 14th century. The internal and external spaces have been altered and adapted over the centuries, undergoing renovations in the 18th century to convert it into a residence. The Hejal, an elegant and well-preserved piece, was only discovered in the 1970s during renovations and is now the center of the exhibition circuit.

Wandering through the narrow streets of the Judiaria, I imagined what life must have been like for the families who once called this place home. The echoes of their daily lives seemed to resonate in the stones beneath my feet. It was a deeply moving experience, connecting me to a past that is both distant and intimately human.

“Sometimes, the most profound journeys are those that lead us back to the stories of those who came before us.”

Leaving Castelo de Vide, I set my sights on Alto da Serra de São Mamede, the highest point in the range. The drive was an adventure in itself, with winding roads climbing steadily, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The ascent was steep, but the views were more than worth it. As I gained altitude, the air grew crisper, and the vegetation transformed, with hardy shrubs and windswept trees clinging to the rocky slopes.

Reaching the summit of Alto da Serra de São Mamede was like arriving at the top of the world. At 1,025 meters, the vista was breathtaking. The landscape unfolded in every direction, with rolling hills, verdant valleys, and distant villages dotting the horizon. The sense of tranquility was palpable, broken only by the occasional cry of a soaring bird. The fresh air, the panoramic views, and the sheer solitude made it a moment to remember. I could see Marvão and Castelo de Vide in the distance on that clear day.

I found a quiet spot to sit and soak in the scenery, reflecting on the journey so far. The vastness of the landscape was a humbling reminder of nature's power and beauty. It was a perfect moment of solitude, allowing me to disconnect from the world and reconnect with myself.

After descending from the heights of São Mamede, my stomach reminded me it was lunchtime. I decided to try Eucatula Kitchen. It was a good choice, and I enjoyed the regional flavors.

As the day wound down, I found myself at O Castelo - Café Lounge, a spot recommended for its relaxing atmosphere and, intriguingly, a resident parrot. I settled in with a glass of local wine, enjoying the laid-back vibe. The café was a cozy haven, and the parrot certainly added a unique charm with its whistles and bird calls.

For dinner, I chose Dom Jardim, a restaurant known for its local cuisine. I savored traditional Alentejo dishes, rich in flavor and history. It was the perfect end to a day that had been a feast for the senses.

Tonight, as I reflect on my experiences, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to explore this remarkable region. Each day brings new discoveries, new connections, and a deeper appreciation for the beauty of simplicity.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore Baloiço da Torre de Barrozinha and Passadiços do Gameiro [if last day of trip, merge in “Trip end”]. I’m excited to see what new adventures await.

This solo journey is turning out to be everything I hoped for and more. The blend of cultural immersion and natural beauty is exactly the kind of escape I needed. As I prepare for another day of exploration, I carry with me the lessons and memories of today, ready to embrace whatever comes next.

As I crochet a small memento of my trip tonight, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to immerse myself in such a rich tapestry of experiences. It's moments like these that remind me why I love to travel, to explore, and to share these stories with all of you. Until tomorrow, goodnight from Serra de São Mamede.

The prospect of visiting Baloiço da Torre de Barrozinha and Passadiços do Gameiro tomorrow fills me with anticipation. Each day here unveils new facets of Alentejo's charm, and I'm eager to see what hidden corners and scenic vistas await. As I prepare for tomorrow's adventures, I'm reminded of a quote from one of my favorite Mexican authors, Laura Esquivel: "Each of us is born with a box of matches inside us but we can't strike them all by ourselves." It's these shared experiences, these connections we make along the way, that ignite our passions and make our journeys truly meaningful.
