Day 7: A Day of Culture and Culinary Delights in Buon Ma Thuot
Experience the cultural richness of Buon Ma Thuot with visits to local resorts, community spaces, and savoring authentic Vietnamese cuisine.
Friday Adventures in Buon Ma Thuot
Today marked another incredible chapter in my Buon Ma Thuot adventure. It was a day filled with cultural immersion, delicious food, and unexpected discoveries. From exploring community spaces to indulging in local cuisine, every moment was a testament to the warmth and vibrancy of this region. Let me share the highlights of my day!
My day began with a delightful breakfast at Quán Cây Đa. The name translates to 'Restaurant Under the Tree,' and it lived up to its name with a charming, shaded outdoor setting. I savored a traditional Vietnamese breakfast, bánh mì ốp la (sunny-side up eggs with bread), and a strong, aromatic coffee, the perfect fuel for a day of exploration. The coffee here, of course, was exceptional – a testament to Buon Ma Thuot's reputation as the coffee capital of Vietnam. Sipping that first cup, I felt a surge of energy, ready to embrace whatever the day held. It reminded me of the simple joys of Haarlem, enjoying a coffee at a local cafe before a day of translation work.
After breakfast, I set out to visit Kotam Community Resort. This place is more than just a resort; it's a celebration of the Ede culture. As I wandered through the grounds, I was struck by the beautiful landscaping, vibrant flowers, and traditional wooden architecture. The resort is designed to blend seamlessly with its natural surroundings, creating a serene and peaceful atmosphere. I spent a couple of hours exploring the traditional houses, learning about the customs and traditions of the Ede people, and simply enjoying the tranquility of the environment. It’s a bit outside the city center, about 9km away, but well worth the short trip.

Sometimes, the most enriching experiences are found in the simple moments of cultural exchange and appreciation.
Next on my list was Nhà Ở Xã Hội Buôn Ma Thuột. This is a social housing project in the An Phu urban area. While it might seem like an unusual tourist destination, I was interested in seeing how the local community lives and interacts. This complex provides affordable housing for locals. Walking through the area, I observed families going about their daily routines, children playing, and neighbors chatting. It was a glimpse into the everyday life of Buon Ma Thuot residents, a perspective often missed by tourists.

For lunch, I ventured to Hội quán duy tân. This restaurant is known for its authentic Vietnamese cuisine, especially dishes from the three main regions of Vietnam. The restaurant has a view of the lake and a spacious, airy garden. I decided to try a local specialty: gà nướng cơm lam (grilled chicken with rice cooked in bamboo tubes). The chicken was incredibly flavorful, and the rice had a unique, smoky aroma from being cooked in bamboo. It was a truly satisfying meal, and the ambiance of the restaurant added to the experience. Remembering Pieter, I wished he could have been there to enjoy the meal with me, as he always appreciates authentic culinary experiences.

After lunch, I decided to do some shopping at Shop An Nhiên - Trang sức, phụ kiện, văn phòng phẩm POP it bmt. This charming shop offers a variety of jewelry, accessories, and stationery. It was a fun place to browse, and I ended up buying a few small souvenirs for Alessia and Pieter. The shop had a unique selection of locally made crafts, perfect for finding something special and supporting local artisans.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Ẩm thực hương rừng for dinner. This restaurant specializes in local Dak Lak cuisine, with a focus on dishes made from ingredients sourced from the surrounding forests. The restaurant offers a cozy and inviting atmosphere, perfect for a relaxing evening meal. I opted for one of their signature dishes: lẩu rau rừng (jungle vegetable hot pot). This hot pot features a variety of local wild vegetables, each with its own unique flavor and texture. It was a delicious and healthy way to end the day, and I left feeling satisfied and content. I was reminded of our family dinners in Haarlem, where we always try to incorporate fresh, seasonal ingredients into our meals.

The weather in Buon Ma Thuot has been quite pleasant. November typically sees temperatures ranging from the high 60s to the mid-80s Fahrenheit, making it ideal for exploring. There's also a moderate chance of rain, so I've been sure to carry my light jacket with me. It seems I forgot my umbrella at home, though! Thankfully, the weather has been mostly cooperative.
Reflecting on my day, I’m struck by the warmth and hospitality of the people here. Even at the social housing complex, where I was simply an observer, I felt welcomed and safe. It’s these small interactions that make traveling so rewarding. As I prepare for tomorrow, I'm excited to visit Bao Dai's Palace and Buon Ma Thuot Square. I also plan to check out Thị cafe & pub in the evening. I’m sure there will be more adventures and discoveries awaiting me!
Buon Ma Thuot is proving to be a fascinating destination, rich in culture, history, and natural beauty. I'm grateful for the opportunity to explore this region and share my experiences with you all. Goodnight from Vietnam!
