Santorini's Unexpected Charms

Today was a day of unexpected discoveries here in Santorini. It's easy to get swept up in the iconic views and sunsets, but I wanted to delve a little deeper and explore some of the island's hidden gems. With my friends in tow, we set out to uncover a different side of Santorini, one filled with art, history, and unique landscapes. We certainly found that and more!

Our day began, as most good days do, with a hearty breakfast. We headed to La Scala in Pyrgos, a charming spot recommended by a local friend. It was just the fuel we needed for a day of exploring. I opted for the La Scala breakfast, a delightful spread that gave me a real taste of Santorini. Fueled up and ready to go, we set off for our first stop: the Santorini Arts Factory.

Located in Vlichada, the Santorini Arts Factory is an amazing place that celebrates the island’s artistic soul. Housed in a beautifully restored industrial building, the Arts Factory is a hub for creativity and culture. As we wandered through the galleries, we were captivated by the diverse range of artworks on display. From paintings and sculptures to multimedia installations, each piece reflected Santorini's unique identity and volcanic landscape. It was inspiring to see how the island’s history and traditions are being kept alive through art.

Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.

Next on our itinerary was the Tomato Industrial Museum, D. Nomikos, which is actually part of the Santorini Arts Factory complex. Now, I know what you might be thinking: a tomato museum? But trust me, it was surprisingly fascinating! Santorini is famous for its unique cherry tomatoes, which are small, sweet, and bursting with flavor. The museum tells the story of these tomatoes and the island's industrial past. It was really interesting to learn about the traditional methods of cultivation, processing, and production that have been used since the end of the 19th century.

The museum is housed in the old D. Nomikos tomato factory, and it feels like stepping back in time. We explored the old machinery, watched video accounts of former factory workers, and even got to see a cool augmented/virtual reality display that showed what the factory was like in its heyday. We also learned that the factory faced some serious challenges, including a major flood in 1952 that swept away machinery and products. It's amazing how they persevered! The museum shop was a treat, too. I picked up a jar of tomato jam to take back home – a perfect souvenir.

After our tomato adventure, it was time to hit the beach. But not just any beach – Vlichada, a unique volcanic beach on the southern coast of Santorini. As we approached, we were struck by the dramatic landscape. Towering white cliffs, sculpted by wind and waves, loomed over the dark grey sand. It felt like we had landed on another planet! Vlichada is also known as Moon Beach because of its lunar-like appearance. The beach stretches for about 280 meters and is a mix of sand and pebbles. The water is crystal clear, but it does get deep quickly, so it might not be ideal for families with young children.

We spent a few hours soaking up the sun and exploring the coastline. The unique rock formations were perfect for taking photos, and the calm, clear water was perfect for a refreshing dip. I even saw a few people snorkeling, which I'll definitely try next time. Apparently, being a nudist is the norm here, but we kept our swimsuits on, thank you very much! Vlichada is also home to a small marina, where fishing boats and yachts bob gently in the water. We took a stroll along the harbor and watched the boats come and go.

For lunch, we decided to stay close to Vlichada and try Ammoudi Fish Tavern, a restaurant I had heard great things about. It's located in Ammoudi Bay, a picturesque harbor at the foot of Oia. The drive down was a bit nerve-wracking, with hairpin turns and steep cliffs, but the views were absolutely worth it. Ammoudi Bay is stunning, with its colorful fishing boats, crystal-clear water, and red volcanic rocks. The tavern itself is right on the water, so we had an amazing view while we ate. The seafood was incredibly fresh – I opted for the grilled octopus, which was cooked to perfection. My friends tried the lobster risotto and the sea bass, and they were equally impressed. I can see why Ammoudi Fish Tavern is considered one of the best seafood restaurants on the island! One thing to note: getting to the restaurant can be a bit tricky. You can walk down the steps from Oia, but it's a steep climb, especially in the heat. Alternatively, you can drive down, but the parking can be limited. Some restaurants offer a boat transfer from Ammoudi Bay, which sounds like a fun option.

After a leisurely lunch, we decided to head back to Pyrgos and freshen up before dinner. As the sun began to set, we made our way to Selene Restaurant, a fine dining establishment that has been shaping Santorini's gastronomic destiny for over 37 years. Set in an 18th-century Catholic Monastery in the heart of Fira town, Selene offers an authentic Santorinian dining experience. In 2021, Michelin-starred chef Ettore Botrini joined the restaurant, marking the beginning of a fresh era. The restaurant’s aesthetic palette creates a cozy and inviting atmosphere that welcomes guests of all ages.

The innovative menu is a culinary journey with signature dishes that combine tradition and creativity, with a focus on locally sourced ingredients. The experienced team of sommeliers offers exclusive thematic wine tastings, in which you will have the opportunity to compare various producers, both locally and on the international stage. With the breathtaking backdrop of Santorini and the professional staff, the Selene restaurant promises an unforgettable journey into the heart of Santorini’s unique flavors and rich history. We were not disappointed. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. I especially enjoyed the cuttlefish served atop homemade noodles – a truly unique and delicious combination. The service was impeccable, and the atmosphere was romantic and enchanting. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

Before heading back to Serapias Suites, we quickly stopped by The Traditional Cave Souvenirs shop. I wanted to get something for Alessia, and I knew she would appreciate a little piece of Santorini to take back home. I ended up buying her a beautiful handcrafted necklace with a tiny blue and white Cycladic house pendant. I'm sure she'll love it!

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm reminded of the importance of venturing beyond the typical tourist spots and discovering the hidden gems that a destination has to offer. Santorini is so much more than just stunning sunsets and whitewashed buildings. It's a place with a rich history, a vibrant culture, and a unique natural landscape. I'm grateful for the opportunity to experience all that it has to offer, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. Tomorrow, we are planning to explore Nea Kameni, the Volcano of Santorini, and the Santorini caldera. I am very excited about this!
