Day 7: Journey to the Heart of Santorini: Exploring Volcanoes and Calderas
Uncover Santorini's volcanic past with a trip to Nea Kameni, the Volcano, and the breathtaking caldera. A day of exploration and wonder!
A Volcanic Revelation
Today, I embarked on an adventure that took me to the very heart of Santorini's dramatic geological history. It was a day filled with the raw power of nature, stunning vistas, and a profound connection to the forces that shaped this iconic island. The experience was nothing short of awe-inspiring, and I'm eager to share every moment with you.
My day began with a delightful breakfast at Seaside Santorini. The restaurant lived up to its name, offering a stunning view of the Aegean Sea. The crystal-clear water sparkled under the morning sun, and the black volcanic sand of Agios Georgios Beach provided a striking contrast. Sipping my cappuccino while enjoying a light pastry, I felt invigorated and ready for the day's explorations. The vibe was luxurious, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. I could easily see why this spot is a favorite for those seeking a blend of relaxation and indulgence. It’s a place where you can unwind with tranquil melodies and soft grooves, truly feeling the essence of summer relaxation.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I met up with my friends, and we set off towards the main attraction: Nea Kameni and the Volcano of Santorini. The boat trip itself was an experience, with the caldera offering panoramic views that are simply unmatched. The sheer scale of the caldera, formed by millennia of volcanic activity, is humbling. The towering cliffs, dotted with the iconic white-washed villages, create a surreal and breathtaking landscape.

Arriving at Nea Kameni, the volcanic island, felt like stepping onto another planet. The landscape is stark and barren, with dark, rocky terrain stretching as far as the eye can see. As we began our hike to the summit, the air grew warmer, and the scent of sulfur filled our nostrils – a clear sign of the volcano's dormant, yet ever-present, power. Despite the lack of vegetation, there was a strange beauty in the desolation, a reminder of nature's ability to create and destroy.
The climb was moderately challenging, but the views from the top were more than worth the effort. Peering into the crater, I could see steaming vents and multicolored rocks, evidence of the intense geothermal activity beneath the surface. My friends and I took countless photos, trying to capture the immensity and drama of the scene. I couldn't help but reflect on the history of this place, the countless eruptions that had shaped Santorini into what it is today.
The volcano of Santorini is a testament to the raw power of nature, a force that has shaped not only the island's landscape but also its history and culture.
After descending from the volcano, we took a short boat ride to the nearby hot springs of Palea Kameni. The water was a murky orange color, rich in minerals and said to have therapeutic properties. Despite the slightly pungent smell, we eagerly plunged into the warm water, letting it soothe our muscles after the hike. It was a unique and invigorating experience, surrounded by the stunning caldera views.
Back on the mainland, we were famished, and decided to have lunch at Rymidi in Pyrgos. This restaurant offered a delightful contrast to the volcanic landscape we had just explored. With its charming ambiance and beautiful decor, Rymidi felt like a tranquil oasis. I savored a delicious Greek salad, bursting with fresh, local ingredients, followed by a perfectly cooked beef stew. The service was impeccable, and the staff were passionate about their cuisine, eager to share the stories behind each dish. It was the perfect way to recharge and reflect on the day's adventures.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to the Santorini caldera, eager to witness the spectacle that this location is famous for. We found a spot with an unobstructed view, and as the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors, we watched in awe. The sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the white-washed villages and the dark volcanic cliffs. It was a magical moment, one that will forever be etched in my memory. I thought about Pieter and Alessia back in Haarlem. I miss them terribly but I know they would have loved this view too!

For dinner, we decided to try Ftelos Brewery Santorini - MALT Restaurant. Located amidst the vineyards, the brewery offered a unique and modern setting. I was intrigued by the idea of a brewery in Santorini, and I was not disappointed. The beers were expertly crafted, with a range of styles to suit every palate. The food was equally impressive, with a menu that perfectly complemented the beers. I enjoyed a hearty meal while taking in the stunning views of the caldera. It was a great way to end a day of exploration and adventure.

Later in the evening, we decided to check out Aion Cocktail Bar & Bistro. The bar had a lively atmosphere, with a creative cocktail menu and skilled bartenders. I ordered a signature cocktail, a concoction of local spirits and fresh fruits, and savored it while enjoying the music and the company of my friends. It was the perfect way to unwind and celebrate a day well spent. I even tried learning a few Dutch idioms to share with Pieter when I get back!

Today was an incredible journey into the heart of Santorini's volcanic landscape. From the barren slopes of Nea Kameni to the soothing hot springs and the breathtaking caldera views, every moment was filled with wonder and awe. It was a day that reminded me of the power and beauty of nature, and the importance of exploring and appreciating the world around us. I am also reminded of a quote by the famous Italian writer, Cesare Pavese:
Traveling is a brutality. It forces you to trust strangers and to lose sight of all that familiar comfort of home and friends. You are constantly off balance. Nothing is yours except the essential things – air, sleep, dreams, the sea, the sky.
Tomorrow, I'm planning to explore Santorini's wineries, including Santorini Wine Adventure Tours, Boutari Winery Santorini, and Santo Wines. I'm excited to discover the unique flavors of the island and learn more about its winemaking traditions. I might even pick up a bottle or two to bring back home for Pieter. Good night!
