Skaros Rock and Imerovigli: A Day of Discovery

Today was a day of exploration and indulgence, a true Santorini experience! I ventured out with my friends to discover the iconic Skaros Rock and the charming village of Imerovigli, followed by some incredible culinary experiences. It was a day that perfectly blended adventure with the pleasures of Greek cuisine.

The morning began with a hearty breakfast at Blue Sky in Pyrgos. While Blue Sky is actually located in Oia, it was well worth the short trip for a hearty meal to set us up for the day ahead. I enjoyed a traditional Greek breakfast with fresh yogurt, honey, and fruit. It was the perfect start before our hike to Skaros Rock. After breakfast, we took a short drive to Imerovigli, ready to start our adventure.

The hike down to Skaros Rock was absolutely breathtaking. The views of the Aegean Sea and the caldera were simply stunning. As we descended, I couldn't help but imagine what life must have been like when Skaros was a thriving fortress. The rock itself is a natural wonder, shaped over centuries by volcanic activity and earthquakes. I learned that Skaros Rock, also known as Fortress Skaros or Castle Skaros, was once the capital of Santorini until the 18th century. It's amazing to think that this rugged landscape was once the heart of the island.

The path down was well-maintained, though a bit steep in places. Comfortable walking shoes were definitely a must! As I carefully made my way down, I couldn't help but appreciate the stunning views that unfolded with every step. The contrast between the deep blue sea and the stark, volcanic rock was mesmerizing. I paused frequently to capture the scenery with my camera, trying to preserve the beauty of this unique place.

The beauty of Santorini lies not only in its iconic landscapes but also in the stories etched into its ancient rocks.

Reaching the bottom, we explored the remnants of the old fortress and the charming Chapel of Panagia Theoskepasti. The chapel, nestled on the cliffs below the rock, is still in use and offered a peaceful respite. I took a moment to step inside, light a candle, and reflect on the history of this special place. The energy of the island, a blend of ancient history and natural beauty, was palpable.

After our hike, we strolled through Imerovigli, often called the balcony of the Aegean. The village is perched high on the caldera cliffs, offering unparalleled views. The whitewashed houses and narrow, stone alleys were so picturesque. Imerovigli felt more intimate and less crowded than Oia or Fira, making it a perfect place to relax and soak in the scenery.

We spent some time wandering through the village, admiring the Cycladic architecture and popping into small shops. I found a beautiful hand-painted ceramic bowl that I knew would be a perfect reminder of my trip. The shopkeepers were friendly and welcoming, happy to share stories about the island and its traditions.

For lunch, we chose Avra Santorini Restaurant. The restaurant offered contemporary Greek cuisine with a stunning view of the sea. I savored a delicious seafood dish made with locally sourced ingredients, paired with a glass of crisp Santorini wine. The flavors were so fresh and vibrant, a true taste of the island. As I enjoyed my meal, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience such a beautiful place with my friends.

In the afternoon, we indulged in a bit of shopping at Epilekton. I was immediately drawn to the shop's eclectic collection of art objects and unique souvenirs. I ended up buying a beautiful mosaic animal figurine as a gift for Alessia. I know she will adore it. It was a little piece of Santorini to take back home.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to The Athenian House for dinner. This restaurant is known as a hidden gem, offering exquisite Greek food and impeccable service. It's perched on the caldera cliffs in Imerovigli, providing a magical dinner location. The restaurant is celebrating its 10th Anniversary this year, with celebrity Chef Dimitris Skarmoutsos at the helm. I felt incredibly lucky to have secured a reservation at this acclaimed establishment.

The Athenian House truly lived up to its reputation. The food was exceptional, each dish a work of art. I savored the lamb moussaka with Santorini white aubergine, tahini, feta, and bechamel, accompanied by succulent lamb chops. It was a culinary masterpiece! The restaurant also boasted an impressive wine list, featuring a large collection of rare Santorini wines. I opted for a local vintage, which perfectly complemented my meal.

The sunset view from the restaurant was simply breathtaking. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the sky was painted with vibrant hues of orange, pink, and purple. It was a moment of pure magic, shared with great friends and delicious food. The Athenian House is not just a restaurant; it's an experience, one that I will cherish for a long time.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Fira, visit the Museum of Prehistoric Thera, and see the Three Bells of Fira. We'll also be stopping by Tango Champagne & Cocktail Bar for a nightcap. I can't wait to see what other adventures await us on this beautiful island.

Back at Serapias Suites, I reflected on the day's adventures. Santorini continues to surprise and delight me with its unique blend of natural beauty, rich history, and vibrant culture. I'm so grateful to be sharing this experience with my friends, creating memories that will last a lifetime. I am missing Pieter and Alessia of course, but I know they would have loved today as much as I did.

I'm also learning to embrace the spontaneity of travel. Forgetting the adapter for European outlets was a minor inconvenience, but it reminded me to focus on the present moment and adapt to whatever comes my way. And perhaps I'll pick up a new swimsuit while I'm here – a perfect excuse for a little more shopping!

As I drifted off to sleep, I thought about the quote from Nikos Kazantzakis, the famous Greek writer:

In order to see clearly, perhaps it is advisable to sometimes change the lens through which we look at things.

Santorini is definitely helping me see the world through a new lens, one filled with beauty, adventure, and a deep appreciation for the simple things in life.
