Exploring the Enchanting Island of Santorini with Friends
Day 3: Unearthing Ancient Wonders and Fiery Shores: A Day in Akrotiri
Exploring Akrotiri's archaeological site, the vibrant Red Beach, and the serene Akrotiri Lighthouse with friends in Santorini.
A Journey Back in Time
Today was a day of contrasts, from delving into the mysteries of an ancient civilization to basking in the unique beauty of Santorini's volcanic landscape. It’s incredible how much history and natural wonder can be packed into a single day, and I’m excited to share every moment with you.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Mama's Restaurant & Wine Bar in Pyrgos. The warm, inviting atmosphere and delicious food set the perfect tone for the adventures ahead. Fuelled up, we hopped in a taxi and made our way toward Akrotiri, eager to explore the archaeological site often referred to as the 'Minoan Pompeii'.
Unveil the secrets of Akrotiri, an archaeological gem of Santorini, where ancient civilization meets breathtaking Aegean beauty.
Akrotiri is truly a marvel. Walking through the excavated ruins, I felt transported back to the Bronze Age. It’s fascinating to see the remnants of a once-thriving Minoan city, preserved by volcanic ash for thousands of years. The multi-story buildings, intricate drainage systems, and vibrant frescoes offer a glimpse into the sophisticated society that once called this place home. It’s incredible to think that this settlement dates back to around 4500 BC! As I wandered through the site, I couldn't help but imagine what life was like for the people who lived here, trading copper and creating elaborate art. It’s often said that Akrotiri might have even been the inspiration for Plato's Atlantis. While Pieter would have loved to be here with me, I know he would have been geeking out about the architecture just as much as I was. I made sure to take tons of photos for him and Alessia.
The past is never truly gone; it lingers in the stones, the sand, and the echoes of civilizations long past.
After immersing ourselves in history, we were ready for some sun and sea. Our next stop was Red Beach, a short drive from Akrotiri. As we approached, the landscape transformed dramatically. The crimson cliffs rising above the beach created a surreal and breathtaking sight. It's unlike any beach I've ever seen. The red sand and pebbles, a result of the iron-rich volcanic rock, made it feel like we had landed on another planet. The contrast with the deep blue waters of the Aegean Sea was simply stunning.

Getting to the beach required a bit of a walk from the parking area, along a narrow, rocky path. I was glad I had my comfortable walking shoes on! Despite the little trek, the view was more than worth it. The beach itself is nestled in a small cove, providing relatively calm waters perfect for a refreshing swim. Although I didn’t bring my swimwear (a slight oversight on my part), I couldn't resist dipping my toes in the water. Some of my friends enjoyed a swim and basked in the sun, while I took countless photos of the unique landscape.
It’s amazing to think that this beach is one of the few red sand beaches in the world, its distinctive color caused by the oxidation of iron in the volcanic lava. I learned that nudism is also allowed here, adding another layer of uniqueness to this already extraordinary place. We spent a couple of hours simply enjoying the scenery and the lively atmosphere.
For lunch, we headed to To Psaraki, a highly recommended fish tavern near Akrotiri. This simple eatery is run by a Michelin-star chef who decided to focus on fresh seafood. The restaurant is perched on a cliff, offering stunning views of the marina and the sea. We indulged in a variety of seafood delicacies, all prepared with fresh, local ingredients. Mrs. Aggeliki, the knowledgeable and friendly staff member, helped us choose from the daily selection of fish. Every dish was bursting with flavor, making it one of the best meals I’ve had so far on this trip. I can see why it’s considered one of the best places to eat in the Akrotiri Peninsula!

Our final stop for the day was the Akrotiri Lighthouse, located on the southwestern tip of the island. The drive there was scenic, with panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and the caldera cliffs. The lighthouse itself is a striking white tower, standing tall against the azure sky. Built in 1892 by a French trading company, it’s one of the first lighthouses in Greece and has a rich history. It even ceased operation during World War II.

We arrived just in time to witness the sunset, and it was nothing short of magical. The sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors, with hues of orange, pink, and purple painting the horizon. The sun dipped slowly into the sea, creating a mesmerizing spectacle that took our breath away. The Akrotiri Lighthouse is definitely a less crowded and more serene alternative to Oia for sunset viewing. As the sun set, the lighthouse emitted its radiant white light, a beacon of safety for passing ships.
Before heading back to Pyrgos, we decided to grab a drink at Tropical Bar in Fira. This small but classy bar offers a fabulous view of the caldera and is known for its lively atmosphere. The bartender whipped up some amazing margaritas, and we enjoyed the rock and reggae music while soaking in the stunning views.

For dinner, we chose Aktaion Restaurant in Fira, known for serving traditional Greek food since 1922. The restaurant overlooks the caldera and the Aegean Sea, providing a perfect backdrop for our meal. We enjoyed a variety of classic dishes, accompanied by local Santorinian wine. The service was fantastic, and the food was delicious. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.
