Enchanting Pyrgos: A Journey to Santorini's Heart
Today marked the beginning of my Santorini adventure, and what a start it was! Instead of rushing to the famous caldera views, I decided to immerse myself in the island’s history and culture by exploring Pyrgos. It was a decision I wouldn't regret, as the village offered a unique glimpse into Santorini's past, away from the bustling crowds. It felt like stepping back in time, wandering through narrow, winding streets, discovering hidden churches, and soaking in panoramic views that stretched across the entire island. I am so excited to share my experiences with you all!
The flight from Amsterdam was smooth, and soon enough, I was in a taxi heading towards Pyrgos, my home for the next two weeks. As we ascended, the village revealed itself, a cluster of white-washed buildings clinging to the hillside, crowned by the imposing Pyrgos Kallistis Castle.

Pyrgos, I soon learned, means 'tower' in Greek, a fitting name for the highest village on the island.
My accommodation, Serapias Suites, proved to be a tranquil haven.

After settling in, my friends and I were eager to explore. Our first stop was Cava Alta for breakfast.
Experience authentic Mediterranean cuisine at Cava Alta in Pyrgos Kallistis, where every dish tells a story of tradition and flavor.
Perched high in the village, the restaurant offered stunning views. We enjoyed a delightful meal of local delicacies, the flavors as vibrant as the scenery. The staff was incredibly welcoming, and the food was amazing! It was a great way to start our day, fueling up for the adventures ahead. The terrace offered a heavenly view of the alluring sunset colors and the panoramic view of the island’s landscape.
With renewed energy, we ventured into the heart of Pyrgos, drawn by the allure of Pyrgos Kallistis Castle. The climb was a bit steep, but the reward was more than worth it. The castle, built by the Venetians in the 15th century, stands as a testament to the island's turbulent past. As I wandered through the ruins, I could almost hear the echoes of battles fought against pirates, feel the pulse of a community seeking refuge within its walls. The narrow, winding alleys, designed to confuse invaders, added to the sense of stepping back in time. The castle is the best-preserved of the five Venetian castles that once stood on the island. Wandering through the narrow, winding alleyways, lined with traditional houses and chapels, gave a unique perspective of its medieval aura. Climbing to the top allowed us to enjoy astonishing panoramic vistas that you won't find anywhere else in Santorini.
The beauty of Pyrgos lies not just in its stunning views, but in its ability to transport you to another era.
From the castle walls, the views were simply breathtaking. The entire island unfolded before us, a tapestry of white villages, blue-domed churches, and the sparkling Aegean Sea. I could see the caldera in the distance, a reminder of the volcanic forces that shaped this unique landscape. It was easy to understand why Pyrgos was once the capital of Santorini; its strategic location offered unparalleled views and a natural defense against invaders.
After soaking in the panoramic vistas, we descended back into the village, eager to explore its hidden corners. Pyrgos is a village of churches, with over 40 scattered throughout its narrow streets. Each one seemed to have its own unique charm, from the grand Orthodox Church of the Assumption of Mary, with its intricate wood-carved iconostasis, to the small, humble Church of Theotokaki, one of the oldest on the island. Agia Theodosia is another iconic blue-domed church dedicated to the patron saint of Santorini castles. The church of Eisodion tis Theotokou, constructed at the highest point of the castle, was a jewel that deserved our time.
As the afternoon wore on, we decided to indulge in a leisurely lunch at Pyrgos Restaurant.
Discover authentic Greek flavors at Pyrgos Restaurant in Santorini – where exquisite cuisine meets stunning views.
Located in one of the highest points of Santorini, it offered stunning views of the island. The fancy restaurant owns five different halls, indoor and outdoor areas, modern facilities, and elegant décor. The food was exquisite, a blend of traditional Santorinian flavors and modern culinary techniques. I savored every bite, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such a unique and beautiful place. Customers experience a delectable journey through recipes inspired by Santorinian, Greek, and Mediterranean cuisine. The local cuisine is known for its matchless tastes and quality thanks to the rich volcanic soil of the island. We enjoyed fresh vegetables, local meat, and freshly caught fish. The wine list featured fine wines from Santorini's vineyards and other places in Greece.
With the sun beginning to dip towards the horizon, we sought out a spot to enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail. PK Cocktail Bar, perched on the edge of the village, proved to be the perfect choice.

The bar offered a sleek, speakeasy-style atmosphere, with two-leveled balconies overlooking the caldera. The expert mixologists crafted delicious concoctions, using local ingredients and spirits. As I sipped my drink, watching the sky ablaze with color, I felt a sense of contentment wash over me. The crew was amazing and really had a passion for drinks, interactions and enjoying the experience. Everything is done with care and respect. The bar is priced and built for tourists but in a fair way. Drinks had lots of ice without compromising the craft of the drink.
For dinner, we ventured to Metaxi Mas, a tavern recommended by several locals.
Experience authentic Greek cuisine with stunning views at Metaxi Mas in Exo Gonia, Santorini – a true culinary delight.
Nestled in the heart of the island, in Exo Gonia village, next to Agios Charalampos church, it was a bit of a drive from Pyrgos, but well worth the effort. The restaurant's name, which translates to 'between us' in Greek, hinted at the intimate and welcoming atmosphere that awaited us. The menu was a culinary journey of Cretan and Santorinian cuisine, with dishes made from ingredients sourced from their own kitchen garden. I savored the flavors of fava and baked white eggplant, and succulent boneless pork chops in an orange sauce served with a side of oven-baked potatoes. The house white wine was very tasty and the food was good. The wild boar sausage was especially good. The prices were reasonable.
As I sit here now, reflecting on my first day in Santorini, I am filled with a sense of excitement for what lies ahead. Tomorrow, we plan to visit Oia, famous for its sunsets. But today, I discovered a different side of Santorini, a side that is rich in history, culture, and authentic Greek charm. Pyrgos, with its medieval castle, stunning views, and delicious flavors, has captured my heart. I can't wait to see what other hidden gems this island has in store.
Before heading back to the hotel, we stopped at a local gelateria for some dessert. I got the pistachio flavor and it was delicious! Now, I'm off to bed, dreaming of whitewashed villages, blue-domed churches, and the endless beauty of Santorini. I can't wait to share more of my adventures with you all!
P.S. I almost forgot! I realized I forgot my European outlet adapter back in Haarlem. I am going to have to pick one up tomorrow! I also wish I had packed my swimsuit! I am hoping to get some beach time in soon!
Goodnight from Santorini!
