Chasing the Oia Sunset

Today was all about immersing ourselves in the famed beauty of Oia, a village that seems to have sprung directly from a postcard. With my friends by my side, I was ready to explore every nook and cranny, from its charming shops to its breathtaking sunset views. I couldn't wait to share my experiences with you all!

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Throubi Restaurant at Andronis Concept. The setting was absolutely stunning, nestled inside the Andronis Concept Wellness Resort in Imerovigli. The view of the caldera was mesmerizing, especially with the early morning light dancing on the water. Throubi, inspired by the Greek word for basil, perfectly blends traditional and innovative culinary elements. I savored a delicious Greek yogurt with fresh fruit and local honey, while my friends opted for the more savory options. Sipping my coffee and enjoying the panoramic views, I felt incredibly grateful for this experience.

After breakfast, we set off to Oia. The drive itself was picturesque, with glimpses of the Aegean Sea at every turn. As we approached Oia, the iconic white-washed buildings clinging to the cliffside came into view, and I knew we were in for a treat. It's still early in the season, April, so it's a bit less crowded than I imagine it gets in the summer months, which is a huge plus.

Our first stop was the Santorini Folk Art Traditional Shop. I'm always on the lookout for unique souvenirs, something that truly captures the essence of a place. This shop was a treasure trove of handcrafted items, from intricate ceramics to vibrant paintings. I found a beautiful hand-painted bowl depicting a classic Santorini scene – a perfect reminder of this trip. My friends found some lovely jewelry and small trinkets to take back home. Wandering through the shop, I felt a deep appreciation for the local artisans and their dedication to preserving traditional crafts.

The beauty of Santorini lies not only in its stunning landscapes but also in the warmth and artistry of its people.

Lunch was at Ambrosia Restaurant, another gem in Oia. The restaurant is perched atop the cliff, offering truly amazing terrace views. The atmosphere was warm and intimate, enhanced by artistic decorations. The menu centered on Mediterranean and Modern Greek cuisine. We started with the classic fava beans, followed by oven lamb and chicken with figs – each dish bursting with flavor. For dessert, we indulged in the Greek walnut cake and dark chocolate soufflé. Paired with a fine selection of Santorini wines, our lunch was a culinary delight. The service was impeccable, making our experience even more special.

After lunch, we strolled through the charming alleys of Oia, taking in the sights and sounds. The village is a maze of narrow pathways, lined with shops, cafes, and art galleries. Every corner offered a new photo opportunity, with the blue-domed churches and windmills standing out against the backdrop of the caldera. I couldn't resist snapping countless pictures, trying to capture the magic of this place. I even found a small art gallery showcasing local artists, and I was particularly drawn to a watercolor landscape painting. It reminded me of Matera, the city where I grew up, with its similar landscape and unique charm.

As the afternoon wore on, we made our way to the Castle of Oia, Agios Nikolaos Castle, to secure a spot for the sunset. This is one of the most popular spots on the island, and for good reason. The castle offers panoramic views of the caldera and the Aegean Sea, making it the perfect place to watch the sun dip below the horizon. We arrived early to find a good vantage point, and soon the area began to fill with fellow sunset enthusiasts. The anticipation was palpable as the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors. As the sun began to set, the white-washed buildings of Oia glowed in hues of orange and gold, creating a truly magical scene. The crowd erupted in applause as the sun finally disappeared below the horizon – a moment I'll never forget.

For our final meal of the day, we had dinner at Lycabettus Restaurant. This restaurant is built literally on the edge of the caldera cliffs and offers iconic blue views. The romantic atmosphere made it ideal for our group. The menu consisted of Mediterranean elements and locally sourced ingredients. I opted for the tasting course, which was a culinary journey through the flavors of Santorini. Each dish was expertly prepared and beautifully presented. The wine list featured a large selection of Santorinian wines, which perfectly complemented our meal. Dining at Lycabettus at sunset was truly a unique experience, and the impeccable service made it even more special. I felt grateful for this opportunity to experience such a romantic and unique place with my friends. It reminded me of a special dinner Pieter and I had in Haarlem, celebrating our anniversary – a memory I will always cherish.

As the day drew to a close, I reflected on our experiences in Oia. From the delicious meals to the stunning views, every moment was filled with beauty and wonder. It was a day of exploration, culinary delights, and shared experiences with friends – exactly what I needed. Oia had captured my heart, and I knew I would carry its memories with me long after I left.

Tomorrow, we're off to explore Akrotiri, the Red Beach, and the Akrotiri Lighthouse. I'm excited to delve into the island's history and discover more of its natural beauty. We plan to start our day with breakfast at Mama's Restaurant & Wine Bar, followed by lunch at To Psaraki. In the evening, we'll have dinner at Aktaion Restaurant and perhaps enjoy a drink at the Tropical Bar. I can't wait to share our adventures with you all!
